electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 6 March 2003 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I REFUSE ON PRINCIPLE. I want it all I can't decide I mean really I need a WHERE'S MY INHALER?!!?!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 6 March 2003 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Bitter Thoughts Of Little Jane"

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 6 March 2003 00:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow....this is a toughie

I'm going to forego with the obvious choice of "Dirty Water" by the Standells and go with "Friday on My Ming" by the Easybeats

Runners-Up:
"Diddy Wah Diddy" by Captain Beefheart
"Open My Eyes" by the Nazz

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 March 2003 01:34 (twenty-three years ago)

The Other Half: "Mr. Pharmacist"!!

Ernest P. (ernestp), Thursday, 6 March 2003 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

"Don't Look Back" by The Remains. The Beatles were brave to try and follow these guys on stage.

Vic Funk, Thursday, 6 March 2003 03:35 (twenty-three years ago)

'Moulty' by the Barbarians!

(no not really but it cracks me up every time)

Keith McD (Keith McD), Thursday, 6 March 2003 04:17 (twenty-three years ago)

today "you must be a witch" - the lollipop shoppe.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 6 March 2003 04:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The Factory - Path Through he Forest

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 6 March 2003 07:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Or indeed 'Path Through THE Forest'

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 6 March 2003 07:18 (twenty-three years ago)

second the lollipop shoppe. Fred Cole is king

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 07:20 (twenty-three years ago)

i've been listening to the zipper album lately, with fred cole on vocals. fucking great, ridiculous butt rock with cole's vocals somewhere between robert plant and dave thomas. it is supreme.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 6 March 2003 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

The Turnstyle - Riding a Wave

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 6 March 2003 08:17 (twenty-three years ago)

assuming we're including the whole box set, its an obvious choice but it has to be the kingsmen

Robin Goad (rgoad), Thursday, 6 March 2003 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Fenwyck: MindRocker. aaaaaaaahhhhhh, taste that groovy tremolo.

kate, Thursday, 6 March 2003 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh, just finished downloading that one. shall listen now

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 6 March 2003 09:06 (twenty-three years ago)

The Smoke - "My Friend Jack"

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Thursday, 6 March 2003 09:13 (twenty-three years ago)

null - ever manage to procure any of The Rats stuff?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 6 March 2003 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

the rats as in "the rat's revenge" parts 1 and 2? hellz yeah.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 6 March 2003 09:27 (twenty-three years ago)

"Voices Green & Purple" or "Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love-in)"

dave q, Thursday, 6 March 2003 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

The Smoke and The Factory would also make my shortlist, but aaaaahhhh, it's got to be Mindrocker. It sounds like a bubblegum version of late Spacemen3/early Spz - how could I not love it?

kate, Thursday, 6 March 2003 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

If we're including Nuggets 2 then right now...Tages-Read You Like An Open Book

mms (mms), Thursday, 6 March 2003 12:38 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the unkown blueprint for Indie Pop too, innit? Both Blur's "She's So High" and that Mock Turtles song used in the Vodafone ads remind me of it...

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 6 March 2003 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

("Mindrocker", that is)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 6 March 2003 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going to have to second "Don't Look Back" by the Remains.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 March 2003 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

another vore fer "Open My Eyes" by the Nazz

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 6 March 2003 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

and a vote as well.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 6 March 2003 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

argh. I could pick a different one every day, I expect. Today, Too Many People, by the Leaves. Gotta love that lousy harmonica and perfect 60s punk "mom and dad, get off my back! and you, too, me corporate establishment!" whine. And I mean that as a huge compliment. I've only ever listened to Nuggets 2 all the way through once, though. Have to give it another try.

pauls00, Thursday, 6 March 2003 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Just re-read this, and noticed I mistyped "Friday On My Mind" by the Easybeats as "Friday On My MING", which sounds like an ode to a priceless vase.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 March 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Gonn-"The Blackout of Gretely" That riff is hella atomic.

Charles McCain, Thursday, 6 March 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the faine jade is on nuggets (or is it Pebbles?)-

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 6 March 2003 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

anyway, their song.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 6 March 2003 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

my friend jack~the smoke (again)
and i can listen to Journey to the center of yr mind over and over...

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Thursday, 6 March 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

moulty & public execution are hotter'n hell but I gotta go with the remains' "don't look back". it's got something for everybody.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Charlants, "Codeine," far and away.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Charlatans, "Codeine," far and away.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:43 (twenty-three years ago)

That "Up in My Mind" song. Them's rock, forget who did it, one of the obscurer numbers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait, that "I'm five years ahead of my Time" song by I forget who.

I need to buy that box set.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Charlatans, "Codeine," far and away.

yeah, that's great - because of that song i now have like 10 versions of "codeine" by different artists sitting on my harddrive. none of them is better than the charlatans version.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I couldn't believe it when I saw Boys Don't Cry, and "Codeine" was playing during that scene where the Swank character is getting dressed. I was like "yes! the charlatans!". That whole Amazing Charlatans cd is really good, much better than the original record they released on Phillips. The version of "Alabama Bound" on there kicks ass.

Anyway, that said my OPO is:

Music Machine - "Talk Talk"

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 7 March 2003 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a boster for Dantalion's Chariot's "Madman Running Throught The Field"

tigerclawskank, Friday, 7 March 2003 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

'Gonn-"The Blackout of Gretely" That riff is hella atomic'

Word!

(words are hella electro too!)

dave q, Friday, 7 March 2003 11:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
At the moment it's 'A Question of Temperature' by the Balloon Farm.

Favourite Nuggets-era track that's not on the box set - 'Green Fuz' by the Green Fuz.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 24 March 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

ten months pass...
"Lies" - The Knickerbockers

billstevejim, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

nuggets 1: either 'mindrocker' or 'i ain't no miracle worker'

nuggets 2: 'vacuum cleaner' or 'magic potion'

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the double kick on 'magic potion' damn near spills my juices

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Nuggets I: Sagittarius - My World Fell Down (hard to pick just one but I'm a sucker for the sunshine stuff)

maypang (maypang), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The Smoke - "My Friend Jack"

OTM- from a Compilation called Electric Sugarcube Flashbacks
(not on Rhino, on AIP/BOMP)

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe no one's picked "Liar Liar" by the Castaways. :( There are a million faboluos tracks though. It's insane to try to pick just one.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Another vote for "Don't Look Back"

"Talk Talk", "Nobody But Me", "Spazz", "7 and 7 Is" and "Are You a Boy Or a Girl" are way up there, though.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe Saggitarius' underrated masterpiece "My World Fell Down" was on the original "Nuggets" album, which makes my choice quite easy indeed.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
The Strangeloves, "Night Time"

Hayden (Pow, Pow, Pow) (haitch), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Though it is a close-run thing between it, "I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time" by the Third Bardo and, well, about half the rest of the box.

Hayden (Pow, Pow, Pow) (haitch), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Love, "Seven & Seven Is"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The Easybeats, "Sorry." Wins it by virtue of that muted-guitar-as-percussion hook.

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"Last time around" by the Del Vetts
"Mr Pharmacist" by the Other Half
"Going all the way" by the Squires
and on and on and on...

it's not on the Nuggets boxsets, but _Scream_ by Ralph Nelson & the Chancellors is totally unbelievable

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The Pretty Things - "Walking Through My Dreams at Night"
We the People - "You Burn Me Up and Down"
From the 2 Rhino boxes.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"Don't Look Back" by the Remains

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll also go with "Don't Look Back." That song's got it all -- crazed momentum, killer octave jump on the chorus, righteous attitude, and two great parts where it all falls apart and then perfectly back together again. Plus, the gospelly part is like a sermon about how ya just gotta do what ya WANT!

briania (briania), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And it's about the DEVIL!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, do what thou wilt, baby...

briania (briania), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I think my favorite part is at the end of the sermon-y part, when he says "and when they start-a their talk-talk-talkin'..." and the drums come back in with this crazy funky beat for like two measures before stopping again for the little bass breakdown.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

No brainer: Captain Beefheart - Diddy Wah Diddy.

Thrying to chose what comes second could be a major exercise 'though!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

But wait ... "Scream" by Ralph Nelson and the Chancellors?? Every so often you hear a title that's just gotta be great. Marco, please tell us that's available somewhere!

briania (briania), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

nuggets 1 - elastik band - "spazz"
nuggets 2 - the idle race - "imposters of life's magazine"

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"But wait ... "Scream" by Ralph Nelson and the Chancellors?? Every so often you hear a title that's just gotta be great. Marco, please tell us that's available somewhere!"

you can find it on the "Back from the grave vol.1", cd version.
it's totally insane: out of control, frantic, with venomous guitar licks and...erm, screams. it sounds like the perfect marriage between out-there 50's rock n roll à la Hasil Adkins and a frat party band (is this the term?) gone horribly wrong. And its good to dance too.

ps "don't look back" is another monster song, of course...

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

I'm going with "It's Cold Outside" by the Choir. That's timeless shit right there.

Richard Wood Johnson, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Four years later on, it's still Mindrocker. God, I love that song.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 16 August 2007 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

the Underdogs - Love's Gone Bad

I see a rainbow, all black...

nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 16 August 2007 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

The one track that I genuinely love on this comp is What Am I Going To Do by The Dovers.

Display Name, Thursday, 16 August 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

Nuggets I - JOurney to Tyme Kenny & The Kasuals

Nuggets II - Hows does it feel? The Creation

(actually I love the Tages 'Read you like an Open Book' on Nuggets II - but it doesn't feel psych enough that it should be included)

Bob Six, Thursday, 16 August 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

five years pass...

Definitely "It's Cold Outside"... or possibly "Spazz."

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

Lately, I've been playing Save My Soul a lot.

Binjominia, Thursday, 13 September 2012 00:52 (thirteen years ago)
