Pavement/Zappa tribute logic

Can you help sort this out? The title of Pavement's 1995 album "Wowee Zowee" obviously refers to the Zappa song "Wowie Zowie" (from the first Mothers of Invention album) - and I assume that the Pavement cover art (cartoony speech baloons) refers to the cover of Zappa's "Läther" album (a cow with a cartoony thought balloon).

BUT - I was under the impression that "Läther" had never been officially released (in its intended form) until 1996, when Ryko finally put the four discs together into a single album - a year AFTER the Pavement album came out. Was the Zappa cow/thought baloon cover art floating around before then?

Also: the title of the ubiquitous Pavement bootleg "Stuff Up the Cracks" refers to the Zappa song "Stuff Up the Cracks" (from '68's "Cruising With Ruben & the Jets"). But I'm almost sure that the "Cracks" boot came out BEFORE "Wowee Zowee" (sometime in 1994). I assume I'm wrong - the bootleg creator was obviously not clairvoyant, and didn't magically know that Pavement's next album would be named after a Zappa song. Nevertheless, the chronology here has always thrown me.

Sorry to use so much text on something so absurdly picayune.

Actually, the cover art balloons (also) refer to Guru Guru's "Kanguru"

Oh, jeez, you're right. I had never seen that before. Obviously the direct source. Thanks.

(Speaking of cover art fun, I assume you've seen this: http://www.plimsoul.com/knockoff_project/ )

So, uh, is that Guru Guru album any good? The only German bands I know are Amon Duul II and DJ Lars from "The Real World: London."

amon duul - better than good. Buy Yeti (II) or Paradiswartz Duul (I) (sp?) then Psychedelic Underground (II)

"Kanguru" is a great record, though I seem to be alone with that opnion. Everyone praises Guru Guru's first album "UFO", and it is quite spooky, distorted, and atmospheric.. but it just ain't that fun. I've always preferred "Hinten" and best yet "Kanguru".. some nice rock out, wackiness, and breaks.

Those "Cover Connections" threads are massive. Better lurk for a year or so, greenhorn that I am.

Amon Duul II's Phallus Dei is really fun as well. :-)
