who do yall think are the most underappreciated bands of the indie realm? I'd say Tower Recordings, Chavez, Guv'ner and Thrones top my list. a year ago I would have said Spoon.

and why doesn't anyone ever talk about Fudge Tunnel? their first single and first full length bests the last decade of Melvins records.

to quote Jim Goad, Let's Fight!

Ha, I've been surprised lately to see that people talking about Zwan suddenly have all sorts of respect for Chavez.

it's true - it forced me to go back. Gone Glimmering is killer but what REALLY rules is that 7" - didn't dig the Zwan album much though. To be fair, I did own the Chavez records before, and liked them, but only recently have I gone back to them. as far as Matador bands go, they KILL Bardo fucking Pond and Helium, etc...

1. Das Damen. They weren't the kind of band that inspired lavish, career-making praise -- they were just really fun, creative, and always falling a bit shy of making records that would really win people over. They were always a little too sloppy; the songs sometimes didn't quite gel; etc. It's remarkable how much they sound, in spots, like so many other bands that were huge (or later formed and became huge). I guess they're the epitome of a really good "second-rate" band. But I like them better than most "first-rate" bands of that time.

I found all their albums a few years ago, used, for a buck or two apiece... and the first LP had the original SST press kit stuck in. Their interviews are great - what a funny, unpretentious bunch of dudes!

2. Chevy Heston. So unique and incredible; very underexposed. (Being on a small Boston hardcore label didn't help.)

3. Suzanne Lewis and Bob Drake made a few albums as Hail - awesome, terrific "indie-rock"-type music, except they were released by ReR, and so many of the people who might love them may never have heard about them. Suzanne Lewis later released a few albums as Kissyfur; the second ("Frambuesa") is awesome.

We did this recently with '90s artists:

overlooked '90s groups

(which I mention because most of those groups were indie ha ha ha)

Being indie makes it a lot easier to seem "overlooked!"

funny observation - going back to that other thread - did you notice that most of those bands had horrendous names? Rollerskate Skinny? Shields or no Shields, that sounds like sitcom satire. Something to think about. Glad someone mentioned Space Needle though.

boa morte, acetone, dakota suite

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 6 March 2003 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Dodgy, Ocean Colour Scene, Supernaturals and even Kula Shaker.

two years pass...
i will second kissyfur's "frambuesa"! listening to it right now after not hearing it for a long long long time. i believe sam jeffries referred to it as "thurston phair" at the time, but im getting a real pavement wz-era vibe from this record at times.
