Tell Me About The Dreams You've Had Where You Hear Music

I had a doozy this morning. I was looking at these records and they were both by German leather metal outfit Accept. The first one(I think I was trying to decide if I should buy them)looked pretty normal, although the cover had more in common with a Saxon elpee. The second one, however, flipped me out! It had a textured orange cover not unlike that Pet Shop Boys album and inside were all these pictures of lead singer Udo and there was something seriously wrong with his mouth. Like it had been sewn up or something or he'd had some kind of botched operation. The rest of his face was a cross between the phantom of the opera and Prince Charming-era Adam Ant. I played that record and it was amazing! His voice was all bloozy and the music was great goth/doom metal that still retained the original Accept overblown crunch. I looked at the credits and it said that there was a song that featured Turbonegro! on it and I tryed to find it but every song I skipped to was the same tortured howl and grinding guitars. Really cool. So, I guess the question is:Am I gay? Ha ha ha ! Just kidding. I would only be gay if I'd had a dream about a Scorpions album featuring Leather Nun with cover art that made it look like a Sylvester record. Anyhow, now that I've bored you to death in my coffee-fueled mania, please describe any music you have heard in your dreams. It seems like it is always better and weirder than the real thing.

I've had prob'ly hundreds of music dreams, but one of my favorites...

I'm on a stage in a strange venue in a basement of a stranger building. The ceiling is only about 6" from my head, and all the lights are out. My friend Chris Woodall (who's a bassist I was playing with a lot at the time) is there. I push down one key on my keyboard, and the opening sequenced-organ riff of The Who's "Teenage Wasteland" plays, but all the lights are still out. I hold a roll of duct tape up in the air just as the "DUH...DAH NAH..." kicks off, and all the lights come on and the crowd screams, as if to say "WOO HOO FOR DUCT TAPE!". I tear off a piece and tape the key down and suddenly am wearing a guitar and sing "TEENAGE WASTELAAAAND" as we launch fully into the song. It was even stranger in that the fellow Chris I mentioned above and I were laughing hysterically through the whole thing; not something that happens a lot in my dreams.

And once I had a dream that I was the producer in a recording session with Ween and Ol' Dirty Bastard, and the studio we were using was on top of a gigantic skyscraper. The entire dream was actually me playing drums and watching Ween strap on the "jammy pack" whilst waiting for Dirt to show up. He never did. But that drum beat, I stole from my dream and put it in a song the very next day. :D

I have dreams about/with music all the time. Usually it's music that doesn't exist, but the other night I had a dream in which I heard the entirety of Jim O'Rourke's Eureka. I don't remember anything else about the dream, though.

I had a dream once where I was going to watch Slint practice. All the songs they played don't exist.

I had another dream once where I was going to see a show in somebody's basement in Louisville. A bunch of people I know from bands that actually existed were in this band that played the basement, and the music itself was really loud, noisey kind of hardcore or something. I think the dream was set in winter, I remember it being cold.

Sometimes I dream music that has nothing to do with any context of a band or anything, and I wonder if there's anyway I could write it down/record it in reality. I have similar dreams for other media: the other night I dreamt I wrote a book, kinda like a Catch-22-style parody of FBI agents, and in the dream I was acting out what happened in the book. Wish I had written that shit down.

I've heard music so clearly in some dreams, but the cool thing is that my brain seems to be making it up on the spot. Been so close to writing down what I heard, but, alas, I can't transcribe stuff.

Had a dream where I figured out a new drumbeat, though, and I actually remembered it well enough to do it while awake!

A while ago I had a dream where I was playing bass for Jimi Hendrix, which was cool despite me not being the hugest Hendrix fan.

About a month ago I had a dream that Nirvana was going to play at the college I used to go to, in one of these little school-owned houses that are used as dorms. I went to see them, there were only about 10 other people there. They started to play, but Kurt broke his guitar. I said he could use mine, he borrowed it, but then he said the neck was too thick and he couldn't play it. So I said I would play, but for some reason I couldn't remember any Nirvana songs, even though in real life I can play a few and could probably fake my way through most others. Kurt got mad.

Let the phallocentric/homoerotic dream interpretations begin!

The other morning I had this dream that I had gotten a subscription to the Opera. Every time they had a premiere, or a special event or gala, a really loud buzzer would go off in my apartment. They seemed to be opening operas every couple of seconds--it was driving me crazy and I was frantically trying to disable this big panel of lights and switches they'd installed in my apartment. I woke up and my alarm clock was on. I don't know if that counts as a music dream.

Also, two weeks ago I dreamt I was making out with Kylie Minogue. I don't know if that counts either.

I second that, and it's always the most amazing stuff, isn't it? Mine usually sounds like Massive Attack or PJ Harvey.

I had one the other morning where I was watching Brian Wilson c. 1966 sing something off "Pet Sounds". It swung like Bacharach, kind of Bossa Nova but with these intermittent fuzzy guitar chords. It was a lovely song, though. All I remember was one of the lyrics went something like
"...just like Merlin The Magician/all the girls that I've been kissin'"

I woke up and was too lazy to hum the tune into my MiniDisc before it faded.

shhhhh!! that's my patent Ned.
Seriously, though, it seems w/in the realm of possibility that some device could be made that would accurately translate brain waves into sound. When it happens, instruments will be obsolete.

I had a dream once that I was playing guitar on stage with 25 other people all wearing light blue tuxedoes - we were jamming with ELP.

But my traumatic dream was that I was walking down a snow-covered street and Queen drove up behind me. (Well, I remember that Brian May was in the car & I just assumed that the other guys were Queen) .. The car followed me at a walking pace .. and then an announcer starting counting down as a series of amber lights lit up on the front of the car (blue Impala or Caprice). When the last light lit up (like a drag racing tree) Brian May gunned it. I ran to the side & that's all I remember.

This dream happened in 1977. I was 11. I didn't listen to my Queen records for about 6 months.

And if I ever see Brian May, I'm going to chase him down with my car - see how he fuckin' likes it.

had a really strange one about 10 years ago, haven't thought about it in a while but it came right back when I saw the topic. I was in a Boston rock club (tt the bears?) & there was this band playing & it was just awful, wanted to leave but couldn't, the dream became lucid, I knew I was dreaming & creating this band but I couldn't escape & go flying around or fucking like anyone in control of a dream would want to do. It sounded like Rush combined with Saga and Huey Lewis & the News, & the singer resembled the guy from Def Leppard. The set was at least an hour long, shudder, & I remembered their "hit" well enough to sing it to someone at breakfast.

I had a dream once that I was a concert where Massive Attack was the opening act and Slayer was the main act. I had never heard a Slayer song before and all I can remember from the dream is noisy heavy metal with lots of screaming.

Had a dream once where I was in a classroom and Thom Yorke was putting on a solo show. Don't remember any songs he played though.

Back when I was rabid about Tori Amos, I had a dream with her beautiful b-side "Alamo." All I can remember is hearing that song and when I woke up I couldn't for the life of me remember what release the song was from. Then I was listnening to the Talula single one day and it hit me.

I dreamt last night that I was talking to all these girls I went to college with and in the background was that song "What It Is To Burn" by Finch. It was quite a vivid dream, I'm on the nicotine patch and it really fucks you up while you sleep.

Once I dreamed I'd found this record that had a Slim Whitman-looking guy on the cover, with notes to the effect that a 14-year-old Shayne Carter played guitar on it. When I played the record the first song was a countryish thing with - yes! - Shayne Carter singing as well, and it was absurdly fantastic.

last night i dreamed i was walking by some railway tracks with my friend and some girls (one of which, bizarrely, was kelly from model behaviour, but insisted that she wasn't she just "looked like her") and my friend put a walkman on that was playing Jon Spencer's 'She Said' really loudly and i kept finding myself suddenly trying to sing the 'WEREWOLF!' bits but instead it just kept coming out as 'wrEeErOGGHwOOEEewwwWW!!' and everyone kept laughing at me and then the music started changing and getting cut up with all these other tiny bits of songs like it was some weird Stockhausen experiment or something.

Last night I dreamed that I was in a room with Morrissey. He had on a superhero-type costume on and was telling me how he was going to cover all of Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes and do a song by Captain Beefheart from Trout Mask Replica. Then he grabbed a gun, ran outside his door and shot at something. Unfortunately, the phone rang and I woke up.

Years ago I was staying at my Grandmas for Christmas. Despite running a fever I stayed up to watch The Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary tribute concert on TV, the famous one where Sinead O'Connor got booed off. That night I was drifting in and out of sleep like you do when you have a fever, convinced I was Bob Dylan. Except I was 60 feet tall, and almost as wide. I was lying on stage with a wounded stoumach, tied down, unable to move with musicians crawling around my exposed flesh, eating it. I'd started to rot.

Last week I had a more pleasent dream. I was at a show, watching John Coltrane. The band had just played the theme to some mad uptempo skronk thing, like Ascension (but not Ascension). Coltrane started to solo, I woke up, and what I'd thought was his Sax was actually the bedroom door creaking as my 3yr old son came in the room.

Revive. Reveries.

After a house party (empties everywhere) I was chased by a black panther to the tune of Memphis Bleek's "Is That Your Bitch?"

I led a procession down the halls of my high school, a massive march to the tune of Samantha Fox's "Touch Me (I Want Your Body)."

R.E.M. performed using a pseudonym at a dive bar under the Mississippi Bridge (Louisiana side). They played a spot on cover of CCR's "Down on the Corner."

ten months pass...
last night, i dreamed I had (guiltily) spent $250 on a four-disc velvet underground box set of lou reed playing experimental music very early in the velvets' career. i was listening to it in my dream, thinking i would burn the discs and then sell it back for whatever i could make from it. due to recent money problems, there was much shame in this dream. (this is not something i would actually buy in real life, especially at that price.)

a few months ago, i woke up right after dreaming this amazing pop song tailor-made for frat and sorority kids to enjoy (and buy). it's a big, sing-along, acoustic-backed song that fades up amidst "a people talking at a party" crowd noises. the verses are as catchy and anthemic as most songs' choruses; the choruses and bridges are just devastating! i still have the melody and some lyrics in my head; it would be a tremendous success if i knew how to play guitar and record it.

More vivid than any memory of any dream where I have heard music (and there've been some pretty colourful) is still the memory of one particular black and white dream where music was rather conspicuous by its total absence. "Conspicuous" because the dream had a lot to do with Frank Kogan('s invisible presence).

i haven't actually dreamt about music much in the past year, despite sleeping with headphones on most of the time. here's what i got:

feb 13 2003
my boss, jon secada, sang me happy birthday in spanish at a party for my last day of work. i pretended it was the happiest moment of my life when really i wanted to tell him he was a cocksucker and he could take this job and shove it, etc. i have never actually heard jon secada, ever.

mar 10 2003
my pal was sleeping in my room and (alarmingly) i came in with a mega-hardon and straddled him. he woke but didn't really say anything. i wanted to change the music that was playing - portishead - and i held up bowie's outside cd, which i'd lent him, and asked if he liked it. he more or less told me to fuck off but then we open mouth kissed for a good while. we probably could've fucked, even. but (thankfully) i dawdled too long or something and my cock went soft and i split.

later i ended up at the same pal's house for a big clothing sale but here music was blaring so impossibly loud i couldn't even hear myself yelling "does this jacket make me look like a dude out of voltron?!!" i'd tried turning the stereo off but none of the buttons worked, of course.

***

mar 11 2003
i was trying to impress my five-years-ex-gf with some australian stooges-type band (who weren't radio birdman) doing a live set in my living room/radio station. they played a song that was supposed to start off quietly before turning into a real howler but it just went on and on and on and on with the quiet bit because i needed to do something i couldn't figure to trigger thee rock. in any case, my ex wasn't impressed.

***

may 30 2003
my pal was trying to show me some snowboard trick but his board turned into a record so we sat in the snow and listened to it. it appeared to be some jim morrison & ray manzarek triple lp. but it was some serious jim + james williamson raw power shit. it started off with a track called "suze rock" that was raw as fuck. just amazing. the next track was some slower "five to one" type thing as if it were a two-track kill city demo. i can't remember the lyrics but my pal was singing along like a jerk. i was kinda impressed/terrified he was so into his morrison impression but when the song was over he was so embarrassed that he refused to lend me the records. i was just begging.

***

jul 28 2003
my former (actual) boss and i were heading down an escalator to an underground parking lot when i spotted amanda bynes through the window. she had a sickenly narrow waist, like she'd been wearing a corset for seventeen years, and an ugly tattoo on her right shoulder blade. but we were excited nonetheless and we sang "manda manda manda manda manda shoooww!!!!" all the way down. everyone thought we were kee-razy.

***

there have also been tons of pop star cameos like dr. dre the veterinarian, trick daddy hanging out in my kitchen watching hockey in my front yard, black-haired xtina about a month prior to "fighter" debut, chilling on the beach with missy elliott lamenting aaliyah's passing, etc. i like to rap in my dreams too.

Dreamt that Liam Gallagher had written an actually good song 🤣🤣🤣🤣

But wait, there's more. The song was a series of duets. For each verse, a different personality would sit in a chair opposite Liam and proceed to slag him off in song.

Then Liam would have the chance to defend himself in the chorus as his counterpart gets up grimly from the chair and gives it to the next person.

So basically a succession of people singing about what a chump Liam Gallagher is while he unsuccessfully tries to convince them otherwise.

I had to admit, in my dream, that it was unusually funny, sad and self-deprecating
