Al Jourgenson CD/SD

Revolting Cocks' 'Beers, Steers, & Queers' has being going through my head lately. I love that track, and the album of the same name it's from.

But RevCo were always meant to be the comedy side project of Al Jourgenson, with Ministry being his 'real' band. Yet, anything I've heard by Ministry has been a bit dull by comparison with the best of the Cocks' work.

Any thoughts?

I though the brains behind revco was Chris Connelly? Obviously they all bounced around on each others projects, but Revco always seemed like a Chris Connelly project.

let go down, and herd 'em up, if you agree, then word 'em up!

And if you don't - then shut the fuck up.

Er, is that right? It's while since I heard the track.

Any city slickers going to dare criticise the mighty Revolting Cocks?

Search - "Supernaut", 1000 Homo DJs
Destroy - anything to do with that fuckhead Jello Biafra

Classic of course: metal meet Mr. Jourgenson and his friends Bushmills, LSD and heroin. Now have some fun! And don't come back without some blinding music.

Search:

'Supernaut', 'Beers Steers & Queers' -the album, but esp. title track, first half of the 'The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste' and his masterpiece "Psalm 69". Revolting Cocks live video is fun. Live Ministry album is excellent esp. blinding Fuck-mantra/outro to 'Stigmata'.

Destroy:

2nd Revolting Cocks album is aweful. Lost track of Ministry after "Pslam 69".

Extremely flawed classic. Could almost do no wrong, then completely fell inside his own anus and dragged 75% of industrial music with him.

Search: _Twitch_, because it's the best thing he did that he's put his name to. Also, 10,000 Homo DJs, "Tin Omen" by Skinny Puppy, and "Beers, Steers, and Queers".

Destroy: Everything after _A Mind Is A Terrbile Thing To Taste_. Particularly that hopelessly unbalanced best-of that just came out which only has, what, three listenable song on it? BLEAH.

Search: The massive, 7+ minute 'Jesus Built My HotRod' RedLine/WhiteLine version - Ministry.

DavidM, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lard (the group with Jello Biafra) were pretty good too. Search: "Psalm 69" and "Beers, steers and queers" album. I havent listened to them in ages though. "Scarecrow" was my fave Ministry track. Never hear a peep about industrial metal these days. I quite liked a lot of it though.

Destroy: Pigface (industrial metal supergroup)-"fook" album

Michael, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SEARCH: "Apathy" and "Supernaut" by 1000 Homo DJs, "No Name No Slogan" by Acid Horse, "Stigmata," "Revenge," "Angel," "Everyday is Halloween" and the entirety of the PSALM 69 album by Ministry, "Beers, Steers + Queers," YOU GODDAMNED SONOFABITCH, "Attack Ships on Fire" by Revolting Cocks, "Mate Spawn & Die" by Lard, "I WILL REFUSE" by Pailhead (AL and Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat/Fugazi)

DESTROY: FILTHPIG, DARK SIDE OF THE SPOON, IN CASE YOU DIDN'T FEEL LIKE SHOWING UP

alex in nyc, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up has an excellent version of So What on it, so keep that. Twitch is Ministry's most interesting album, when they seemed more interested in Cabaret Voltaire than Metallica. His partner in crime, Paul Barker, had a nice side track called Lead Into Gold. Oh, and don't forget the single Everyday is Halloween.

all that shit is dud. music for hard people yo. mind you, there was a my life with the thrill kill kult single that was pretty good. they're connected aren't they?

gareth, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thrill Kill Kult and Ministry are connected in the sense that they were both based in Chicago. There was also a TKK song that ripped off its lyrical hook from a Ministry B-side. There may have been a side project that Al and Groovie Mann were involved in together, but I can't think of what it would have been (it's been about 7 years since I really followed that scene).

Thrill Kill Kult is indescribably classic, though, even if it is just for the first four albums.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 27 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult probably only have one good album, and that's "Confessions of a Knife". That's the one with 'Kooler Than Jesus', 'Ride the Mindway' and the one with the "I live for drugs" sample.

SEARCH: "Hey Asshole" by 1000 Homo DJ's (and yes - they spelt their name with an apostrophe) from their SUPERNAUT release.

DESTROY: Pre-TWITCH days Ministry: '80s Synth-fag music supreme!

Kodanshi, Saturday, 30 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one month passes...
love all tkk before 13 above the night and only cert5ain songs after that but easy girl, and gateway to hell are some badass songs, though i think their newer stuff is too techno, love all of ministry except first, with sympathy is that really al sounds like they had no hope, anyway check out the group Mindway on mp3.com they are a mix between nin, tool, and ministry so check it THEY REALLY ROCK. revolting cocks rule

Donny Mindway, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

synth fag music supreme sounds like it would be right up my alley, Mr Kodanishi.

The Dirty Vicar, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That first Ministry album is brilliant. Where else are you going to find songs that sound like bouncy synth numbers about falling in love which are actally about being burned in effigy, domestic abuse, cheating, emotional blackmail, personal abasement to sustain a loveless relationship, using prostitution as a metaphor for love, and stalking people? The only song on there that really fits the awful things people say about that album is "What He Say?", which is also the worst song on that album.

TKK were also fantastic up through _13 Above The Night_. Their recorded output since then has been of patchy quality, but their live show still kicks ass.

Dan Perry, Friday, 3 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Don't forget PTP (Programming the Psychodrill for the uninitiated) -- Rubber Glove Seduction. Classic. Not Einsturzende Neubauten, but right up early Revco lines.

So odd, happened on this thread with a failed Information Superhighway search and it brought up all kinds of memories, listening to all this music in those days. Worshipped Al, Barker, Connelly, and the crew, as well as KMFDM, EN, TKK, and others I've forgotten.

Memorable line from Al from his interview in "Spin" magazine around the time of Mind:

Interviewer: "How do you know when a song is good?"

AJ: "Well, we take a bunch of acid and drink a bunch of whiskey and then we play. Then we roll it back and if it makes our dick hairs stand up, we keep it."
