What is Geir Hongro's Favorite David Bowie Record (If Any)?

I must know! I say it would be either Hunky Dory or his "Laughing Gnome"-era stuff, because that's where he's at his most (conventionally) melodic and Geir-friendly.

then again, Geir might think that all Bowie is crap (and there are those ILMers who would agree with him, though i am not one of them).

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 8 March 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm guessing his a zealous supporter of Tin Machine's Oy Vey, Baby!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 March 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the more i think of it, the more i think that Geir wouldn't like Bowie because of how he butchered "God Only Knows." said butchering was quite egregious, i concur, but for one such as Geir with such a pronounced melody fetish i imagine that it would really sour him on the rest of the Bowie oeuvre.

anyway, let's hear from the man himself since he's here!

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 8 March 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to just pick on Geir until he leaves, but I worry that we're only encouraging him.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 8 March 2003 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(The Geirists have already won. Sigh.)

whats so bad about geir? so far he doesnt seem any crazier than anyone else.

Bosse-De-Nage (Bosse-De-Nage), Saturday, 8 March 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm thinking lodger.
and i'm not thinking.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Saturday, 8 March 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, my delivery was snide and a bit snarky -- my bad, i apologize to Geir and anyone else offended thereby. but i started this thread because i am curious, and would genuinely like to know from the man himself!

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 8 March 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well if it isn't 'Hours' he's not as much of a melody junkie as he claims to be, that album is just beautiful, I mean *I* even like it

dave q, Saturday, 8 March 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

He probably isn't too keen on 'Young Americans'. Although he would still say it's the best soul album record ever made.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 8 March 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, here's an exact quote from Geir on alt.music.alternative many years back:

"Bowie hasn't made an album worth a "honorable mention" since
"Diamond Dogs" back in 1974."

Also:
Young Americans = good disco but safe career move, Berlin Trilogy = dud (I think; or, at least, not as good as what came before), 80s stuff = sellout.

I post this not to burst the fun, but I am interested to see if Geir's opinion has changed over the years. Though my guess would be...no, it has not.

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 8 March 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, sellout indeed...

Adam A. (Keiko), Saturday, 8 March 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Everything David Bowie has done is melodic anyway. Maybe not in a conventional way, but there is nothing wrong with a complex melody as long as there is a melody there.

My favourite Bowie record is "Low", but I love all of his 70s albums (except "Pin Ups" and possibly "Young Americans")

Hmmm. I have definitely changed my mind. :-)

I guess I changed my mind regarding Brian Eno at about the same time I stopped hating techno.

And several of his 1995 onwards output has been quite good too. Both experimental and "modern" albums like "Earthling" and more pop-oriented ones like "Hours" and "Heathen".

That would be "Fulfillingness First Finale". :-)

Bowie's best "soul record" (if it can be called "soul") is "Station To Station", but the title track (which is my main reason for liking that album so much) is more prog than soul, really.

Re: Bosse
I can't speak for anyone else, but Geir's cluelessness has an edge of intellect and meanness that sets him apart from most online idiots.
(Not that there aren't mean morons out there; it's the combination of meanness and intelligence; he doesn't seem dumb enough to have any excuse for his narrow, offensive statements)

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Sunday, 9 March 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

there is nothing wrong with his tastes. they are him. and geir seems willing to discuss good naturedly here, especially considering the harrassment given him here with threads like this. if he behaves well here, then he should be treated accordingly. people can change.

Bosse-De-Nage (Bosse-De-Nage), Sunday, 9 March 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

geir i have to know, what techno do you like?

robin (robin), Sunday, 9 March 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

There's nothing wrong with his tastes. It's his opinions that I find distasteful, not to mention his assheaded hubris and intractability.
And he has not behaved correctly. He's made remarks, here, that sound racist and classist to ME, and I'm hardly PC.

skwurlplise (Squirrel_Police), Sunday, 9 March 2003 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

geir i have to know, what techno do you like?

Orbital, Røyksopp, Orb, Leftfield, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk.

I guess most of it would sort under some sort of "progressive techno"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 9 March 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

there are several threads archived regarding good bowie vs. bad bowie -- why not reactivate one of them and see if Geir responds ?

a thread that's title is "what does [x] think of [B]" seems a waste of time, and an inversion of normal practises around here -- who needs more threads on the same thing, or threads devoted to specific posters' attitude to something already covered ?

why waste screen thread space on redundant inquiry ? aren't computers meant to elimiate this sort of "red tape" ?

if the systems used here maintained threads over a week like news servers this sort of thing might make more practical sense, but ilm is not set up like a news server

george gosset (gegoss), Sunday, 9 March 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

and if you think that this thread is so "redundant" and "a waste of bandwidth," then you just added to its "redundancy" and "wasted bandwidth" by posting yer tantrum.

that, and nothing is as obnoxious as a thread nanny.

I already started a S/D thread. I have almost every Bowie album (although several of them are admittedly borrowed and burnt), so I have no problem participating in a Bowie thread - familiar with most of his stuff.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 9 March 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(just a tad ?,) tad i don't think it's a waste of bandwidth, but i do think your reply is an inapplicable redundant childish cliche (that is obnoxious)

geir, why don't you stick to your david bawie thread then ?

george gosset (gegoss), Monday, 10 March 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"classist"!!!

dave q, Monday, 10 March 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is this George Gosset. I remember him posting a very similar post on another David Bowie thread, the S/D one I think. That thread was started by Geir, wasn't it? Either this guy is out to limit the amount of David Bowie threads or Geir threads. Is he a moderator? The reasons you gave aren't too convincing...

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 10 March 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is this George Gosset.

He has been sent here by AOL and Bill Gates to limit Internet use of bandwidth. :-)
