stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Bobby Conn has the EVERYONE factor!!!

dave q, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"No Surf in Cleveland," The Euclid Beach Band (which hit the top 70 or so in Billboard c. 1978 or so. The roots of Nada Surf, I swear.)

chuck, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably something by Athlete, who seem pretty keen on becoming the worst band in Britain.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, maybe They Might Be Giants' "Don't Let's Start"?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll stick with albums rather than songs...

I suspect some songs on Premiata Forneria Macroni's "Per Un Amico" would hit the spot.
Robert Wyatt's "Rock Bottom" perhaps? Might be too druggy?

Oh, and Geir, have you heard Mr Bungle's "California"? I would think you'd love at least some of the songs on it, like "Pink Cigarette".

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sweet Charity" off of California is so beautiful and perfect that it's damned creepy. That's one of my favorite albums EVAH.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

RE: "No Surf in Cleveland" .. can't think of it without also thinking of "Funky Poodle" (Fabulous Poodles) and "Mama Says" (was it Wild Horses?)

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the folk implosion - one part lullaby, maybe.

this is a tricky question cos i don't know what geir has and hasn't heard!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Does he know of the Loud Family?

matt riedl (veal), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

every song by Tall Dwarfs? (Geir, if you're reading and you haven't been indoctrined in Dwarfdom, I highly recommend "3 EPs" as a first good one for ya!)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

This one is easy. The band that Geir has not heard that has the highest Geir factor is the Millennium. Placed in the same rock'n'roll cannon as Sargeant Peppers and Pet Sounds and beloved by classists, everywhere. It is also very melodic. I win! : - D

S Samson, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have heard several of those anyway. Actually not too keen on the Millenium album, maybe I would have liked it better if there was a stereo version available...

>>>RE: "No Surf in Cleveland" .. can't think of it without also thinking of "Funky Poodle" (Fabulous Poodles) and "Mama Says" (was it Wild Horses?) <<<

Allmusic.com sez "Funky Poodle" is by Wild Horses and "Mama Says" is by Brian Wilson (or the Beach Boys or somebody.) I never heard either of them, but back in skinny-ties days in Michigan we used to love those first two Fab Poodles albums -- esp. their small early '79 hit "Mirror Star" (which may or may not have climbed higher in *Billboard than the Euclid Beach Band did.)

chuck, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir have you heard of Don Lennon? You would love Don Lennon.

S Samson, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm way late to this but is it established that geir is a real person 'cause that "stereo" comment seems far too self-aware.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a lot of underground American powerpop that I'd probably love if I just got to hear it. Trouble is that they are way to difficult to discover, although I have discovered Cotton Mather and Brad Jones that way.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Eh? The Millennium's "Begin" is in stereo.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Has Geir heard The Shazam? Geir would love The Shazam!

S Samson, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Underground US power pop that Geir would love: The Last, "L.A. Explosion!" Check it out.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

But he loves The Supernaturals and Dodgy! I would have to suggest to Geir to get some Gripweeds in his life!

S Samson, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Daniel Johnston?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir would not like Daniel Johnston because it is lo-fi and he sings very un-melodically.

S Samson, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"Funky Poodle" by Wild Horses -- hands down classic.

"Mama Sez" was done by Love Affair...
