Shite to the top, and now I like to pass the mic to Dr.C for an eloquent defense on behalve of Da Council.

An unthinkable catastrophe in the wake of the furious majesty of The Jam, but once you've gotten over such juvenile fixations, it should be noted that the Council had their fine moments (notably "My Ever Changing Moods" and "(When You) Call Me." Still, I'll always opt for the Jam instead.

Definately hands down, Jam - but I can appreciate the continental, 60's blue-note tracks on "Cafe Bleu". Especially 'Paris Match', which I think Tracey Thorn contributes the sultry vocals.

Style Council: Classic or Dud

I've got 1-2-3-4-5 senses working o-ver-ti-

Wow, Nick, you should have, like, a TV show or something. Like The Dirt Detective, but instead, like, The Thread Detective.

Not long since we last did this, but to scale it down to two songs - classic "A Man of Great Promise" / dud "Confessions 1, 2, 3".

Robin Carmody, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And don't forget "Long Hot Summer"

David, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I wouldn't, it's lovely. However I wanted to select a song that never gets played on the radio or mentioned anywhere, and "A Man of Great Promise" is a) wonderful and b) defies my earlier assumption that no pop song opening with church bells can be good. Also: search "It Just Came To Pieces In My Hands", destroy "Have You Ever Had It Blue?".

Favourite Style Council anecdote: the photo from, presumably, 1985, reprinted in Q magazine in 1997, of Bruno Brookes (noted Thatcherite) holding the 7" of, ahem, "Walls Come Tumbling Down" (I think this came from one of the old Radio 1 calendars or something). The concept is so hilarious I can't believe the photo *hasn't* been featured on TV Cream or somewhere.

Hey Mr. Munoz! sorry to disappoint, but my love of the Jam does not extend to the Style Council. Respect to Weller for trying something different (and rather silly), but it just didn't hold my interest at the time, and hasn't aged gracefully IMHO. I have to say that I can't say I actively dislike them either - just can't get worked up either way. I wouldn't mind hearing the 'house' album which was unreleased, even if it's an absolute turkey it could be fun to hear once. It's part of the box set, I think. Any comments anyone?

Well I was TOTALLY taken with them in 1995. It was such a welcome alternative to the current alternative. They were clean cut and mod and primary in color when I was surrounded by grunge and plastic punk. I suddenly wanted pictures of Mark King, red crew T shirts, even SADE. Of course some of theeir stuff is hilarious and trash but I like their " Paris " EP where they are dressed so pretty on the cover. ANd teh Cappuccino Kids' ramblings. P.S. Recent Paul Weller work : blech.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. (This is a repeat thread after all.)

How does Nicky D make those blue words appear on the screen?

the pinefox, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd tell you pinefox, but your eyes would glaze over and you wouldn't take it in. I know you.
