Super Furry Animals? or Ping Pong Bitches? Liam Gallagher or Kevin Shields?

christopher, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Careful, Chris, you risk the wrath of 1000-eyed Nick D. This has been done before, but only with Poptones, so I think you're safe. Though I'm fucked if I know how he finds the threads...

masonic boom, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Poptones thread was, notoriously, deleted.

Tom, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm convinced he's both.

Andy, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Missed that... I'm going to venture a guess that perhaps that is why certain people are unable to stop even threads that they start on other topics, into one-sided Poptones blowjobs?

Oh, Momus, Momus, where art thou, Momus? I would renounce everything I ever said about "cleverness" and spend the rest of the night folk dancing to Brecht, if you would just pop up once, and destroy little indie fanboy's dreams of it being "all about the music" and "cash never enters the equation" with one withering post about being signed for "wanting to be bigger than David Bowie"...

masonic boom, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why the attack Kate?

I give the bj to all music I like!

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The fact that he's run the gamut from J&MC to Limahl catapaults him beyond the meager confines of any pat discussion such as this.

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pat? Pat Fish? Oh wait, sorry...thought I was still on the Only Connect II thread.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The thing is, yes, I can be clever if I want to be. I just happen to sincerely enjoy discussing music. Very electic music. I enjoy it when I am turned on to music I've never heard: Randy Newman, Neu, Ed Harcourt, Tom Waits, Gorecki....

I'm not hip or clever and never want to be!

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You do go on about him, Doom.

And attack... where do you see Kate attacking you? She was expressing a contradictory opinion. Back on the Lee Mavers thread, other people (including me) had far more to say about McGee. Do you think that we are attacking, you too?

My opinion... he is simply a loose cannon with a knack for self promotion. Give a blind man a set of darts, and eventually even he will hit a few bullseyes.

colin clarke, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well..

I go on about a number of topics. That is just interesting because people get inflamed about that topic. That is the only reason why I bring it up. It amuses me, playing devils' advocate.

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Playing devil's advocate, eh? Are you sure that _you_ are the one doing the winding, because you certainly seem to get hot under the collar.

colin clarke, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nah..

Not at all!

; - )

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I do believe Colin hit the ball on the sweet spot with his comment. I find this idea pervades the entirety of the McGee era (as detailed in the Cavanaugh bio discussed in this forum a while back - Nick?)

Isn't all A&R really about shooting fish in an ocean? It's the epitome of crapshoot, really. Luck + receptive ears = success.

David Raposa, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Here's a What If for you:

What if McGee's audition for Simple Minds had been successful?

Andy, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He would have ended up marrying Patsy Kensit instead of Kerr. Not sure who would be getting the worse end of the bargain there.

Nicole, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What then, for poor Liam Gallagher, on both counts?

colin clarke, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But wait: isn't the story on Kerr that he has a GIANT Iggy-style penis? Oh, lor.. No I MEAN YES SO DOES ALAN McGEE OBVIOUSLY AND NO I KNOW YOU WOULDN'T KNOW DOOMPATROL AND NOR DO I AND ANYWAY SOUL IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN SIZE WHICH IS NOT TO SAY SIZE IS AN ISSUE HERE O MY O HELL I AM JUST GOING OUTSIDE FOR A WHILE I MAY BE SOME TIME...

(And the tent flap fell back into place and someone reached forward and secured it, and then they lay and stared into the dark, listening to the bitter, terrible wind as it blew, and blew, and blew... )

mark s, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh god..

truth be known, ask my wife, no complaints, 'cept maybe it's too big and thus painful.

so really, it's a pain in the arse. trust me on this one.

god, i'm embarrassed now. I'm off to vanish for another month.

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So, is it my imagination, or has our friend Doom just admitted to being Alan McGee?

Come to think of it, the phrase "playing devils advocate" ... doesn't that mean "assuming a contrary stance to what one actually believes, in order to promote discussion, and assess all sides of a problem"? So, actually, if that _is_ what you are doing, Doom, then, in reality, you utterly loathe Alan McGee, and you are actually The Lollies' biggest fan, possibly that bloke with the ponytail I see down the front of every gig?

colin clarke, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

arrgghh...embarrassed. stop baiting me. go on to something else. arrgggh....

For anyone interested, the other Creation thread, where the two books about the label was discussed, was Rival Creation Myths.

Nick, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's certainly more interesting than than this one.
