Such as what (in your neducated opinion) seperates

a) "College Rock" from "Indie"
b) "Hard Rock" from "Heavy Metal" (I think HM is a subset of HR, but thats just me.)
c) "Soul" from "R&B"
etc.

Subthreads:
Do you like that the standard rekkid store habit of dumping everything that isn't obviously Jazz or Classical into a nebulous category called "Pop/Rock"?
Do you think its a form of musical Aparthied that some rekkid stores seperate all the R&B/Hip-hop into a seperate category called "Urban"?

College rock is brainier and cookier than indie - ie Pavement have 'smarter' lyrics and odder hooks than, um, some indie band.

When I was a kid, "college rock" was what the cool summer-camp counselors listened to - Dead Milkmen, R.E.M.'s "Document," etc. It seemed like a really specific term that now could have no meaning.

When did the phrase "indie rock" come about, anyway?

Casting *RESSURECT THREAD*
Okay, skip the subthreads. They are being discussed HERE; But lets deal with what makes one genre different from another, and where do you draw the line.
Such as
1) what really seperates "Progressive Country" of the 90s and the "Countrypolitan" of the 70s?
2) where are the dividing lines between "emo", "pop-punk" and "hardcore"
3) where does "2 Tone" end and "Ska" begin?

Godamn Calum/Geir threads keep pushing REAL discussion thread below the Event Horizon. Grrrrr.

Where do you draw the line between punk and hardcore? Between hardcore and metal?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 14 March 2003 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

It's all to do with length of hair.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 14 March 2003 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

But Greg Ginn had long hair and he was Hardcore, and Rob Halford and Joey Belladonna have NO hair and they are metal...
