Hint Hint...imagine this being played over the intercom.

Venus Beads

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that all well and good to name names, but DETAILS DETAILS DETAILS, Alex, Give us DETAILS...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I remember Venus Beads. I think they played at the QE2 in Albany once. I liked them.

kate (suzy), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

search: all of those

and also, every single band released by Clairecords. Every single one.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Got those names off the About.com site, I guess About.com is in cahoots with Clairecords.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Blind Mr. Jones, Half String, Alison's Halo, The Charlottes

Destroy: Venus Beads (sorry folks, but I listened to Incision once and didn't care for it much.)

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 14 March 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Venus Beads were okay but not shoegaze, just sorta loud fun. "Moon is Red" is a good song.

Yay to everything else mentioned so far. For some sad reason Seefeel seems to be obscure even to Those Who Were There At the Time, so much praise for them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 March 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Curtain Society are not that obscure, well to me anyways.. i know most of them, they are from good old worcester mass!

Chris V. (Chris V), Saturday, 15 March 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

They play around here almost every friday night. Duncan is the drummer, I hung out with him in high school. we drank beer.

Chris V. (Chris V), Saturday, 15 March 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't forget Scala, either. If they count as obscure dreampop? If AR Kane are dreampop then Scala are. And they put out many amazing, breathtaking songs, yet nobody seems to talk about them ever.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Saturday, 15 March 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The Lovemeknots.

Burr (Burr), Saturday, 15 March 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure they could be accused of being either dreampop or shoegazer, but who remembers the Popinjays and the Heartdrops?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 March 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

obscure, you say?

Drop - like a 'gazier Loop. so sweet. - Mock - MBV/'dive hybrid w. great songs. just the one 12" on Bite Back!? Puppy Love Bomb - Boo Radleys protegees. one my-t-fine Rough Trade EP, and then...? Six String Malfunction - llc associate from the AZ beautifulnoise quarter. has Roland released anything since the first 6SM C90? Should (nee shiFt) - esp. if you agree that Ecstasy of St. Teresa + Low was a meeting long overdue. Lead & Thoughts & Spears - closest thing the US ever had to our own Dif Juz. and, yes, that includes Magnog. the first (S/T) album is what you want. there was a follow up, but... oh dear. D isn't even strong enough. let's just not go there.

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Saturday, 15 March 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

the first spectacle mini-lp like someone trying to sound like ian masters singing for slowdive.

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 15 March 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

majesty crush.

your null fame (yournullfame), Saturday, 15 March 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i hated how majesty crush thought they were gods, had to sit through them every time a shoegazing band came to town. the drummer was on that lame pbs show too, club connect? fun to see him all wasted one night and then on tv the next hanging with four year olds.

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 15 March 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

No, no, no. Seefeel weren't shoegazer or dreampop. And they weren't obscure either. Not by any stretch!

Mad Lil, Saturday, 15 March 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i only like majesty crush in the abstract - that song "if JFA were still together" (supposing JFA were actually an army of jodie foster stalkers) was a neat idea. i think i listened to that EP twice.

your null fame (yournullfame), Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

No, no, no. Seefeel weren't shoegazer or dreampop. And they weren't obscure either. Not by any stretch!

*bows* I must humbly disagree on all points. ;-) The first two EPs and Quique may not have been crumbly digital delay bliss per se but they were the clean minimalist cousins to same. And they might not have been obscure for you and I, but within the past couple of months I've talked with folks who Were There, saw plenty of the shows and tours and bought the import singles from the usual faves but had never heard of Seefeel. I only heard of them initially through MM myself.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 March 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

secret shine tentatively tiptoe around the edges of this thread.

kieron, Saturday, 15 March 2003 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

they count as a Clairecords band now anyway, what with the upcoming retrospective and all

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 15 March 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

but Dreamscape qualifies

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Saturday, 15 March 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Timonium

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 16 March 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Timonium are AMAZINGLY GOOD

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 16 March 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

And they've always been darn brilliant live. You'll appreciate this, Jim -- first time I saw them they were opening for the Cannanes!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 March 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

wahey! they did a split 12" with them too, and covered one of their songs on a recent single. Cannanes fans = people with good taste obv

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 16 March 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure they could be accused of being either dreampop or shoegazer, but who remembers the Popinjays and the Heartdrops?

I remember the Popinjays. Great band, but more power-pop spazzy like Katrina And The Waves rather than shoegazer. Their video for "Monster Mouth" is a day-glo power pop gem.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Sunday, 16 March 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

submarine. the ceedee sucks but i have a single which is blooody gooood. (lips and fingers i think...uh, those abstract titles...)

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 16 March 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay...of these bands which ones sound like The Sundays, and which ones sound like MBV?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

which would you prefer custos?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ecstasy of saint theresa s/d

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I like both, but not simultaneouly.
Here's my questions:
1) If I'm in a rekkid store and I'm in an 'MBV' mood, which obscure Dreampop/Shoegaze band should I scour the $3.00-5.00 cd boxes for?
2) If I'm in a rekkid store and I'm in an 'Sundays' mood, which obscure Dreampop/Shoegaze band should I scour the $3.00-5.00 cd boxes for?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

to my shame i don't know shoegaze for sh*t, but submarine are def on the mbv side

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

(kinda related: esoj - how did you feel about the band named "tugboat 3000"?)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i've heard one song of theirs and it's not very good. but i hate Tugboat Annie way way more

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)
