I heard Jack White gets miffed when people compare his voice to Robert Plant. Huh? He sounds *exactly* like him most of the time, minus all the wretched bluesy excess. And I think you can see that.

their high quality run is ridiculous - I don't think there's really any drop-off until the final album. can't think of any other big rock band in the past decade that had this kind of hit-to-miss ratio as well as such a well-executed conceptual framework behind them

"Her femininity and extreme minimalism are too much to take for some metalheads and reverse-contrarian hipsters," White told the New York Post. "She can do what those with 'technical prowess' can't. She inspires people to bash on pots and pans. For that, they repay her with gossip and judgement."
He continued by saying that Meg has the last laugh over her critics. "In the end she's laughing all the way to the Prada handbag store," he said. "She wins every time."

yeah, no argument. was responding more to his tone than the validity of his complaint. stuff about "reverse-contrarian hipsters" (?) with their "gossip and judgment". it's not the first time he's come across as cranky about this kind of thing. otoh, it must be weird to be the focus of so much attention, both positive and negative, so it's not like i fault him for his defensiveness.

plenty of those on this board, the fact that whiney considers her and the dude from the Black Keys as the worst drummers in the world (paraphrasing slightly here) makes me wonder if he's ever seen a real drummer before

nah yr thinking of THE DOORS
Spoon = eh maybe. I think the one thing really detracting from Spoon's status as "best of" anything is that (as my brother pointed out once) I have no idea what any of their songs are about (with a couple exceptions). Britt has a great ear for hooks and arrangements, but their is something strangely empty about them at their core.
Elbow = never even heard of this band
of Montreal = this band is unlistenable
Radiohead = eh I don't like them but agree that their heyday seemed more like a 90s thing, no?
Animal Collective = yeah okay maybe. I think they dilute their impact by putting out so much stuff tho, some of which is invariably crap.

bigger issue is that I hardly even consider AC a "rock" band. they do a lot of different stuff, but I'm hard pressed to think of anything in their approach/method that is derived from rock music.
― assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 13 January 2011 16:36 (fourteen years ago)
neh, tho i do like some spoon. have loved: queens of the stone age (inconsistent, but a couple great records, decent lead-in and fade-out), high on fire, oneida, others dribbling off the precipice into obscuro garage & metal. have the idea that my chemical romance & fallout boy should figure in somewhere, but i haven't much listened to them, so i really couldn't say.
― normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 13 January 2011 16:56 (fourteen years ago)
i guess i should explain. just happen to think that Spoon were the best rock band from last decade. that streak of albums from Girls Can Tell to Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga i think is unmatched.
Elbow were more of a personal pick, don't expect many to agree. it comes down to the debut and last album being flat out amazing.
of Montreal put out the best album from the last decade, so i added them.
Radiohead put out Kid A in 2000 followed by Amnesiac and ended with In Rainbows. those albums can stand along with OK Computer just fine. what i'm saying is Radiohead belong in the 2000's conversion.
no need to get into Animal Collective, people have their opinions.
yes, the White Stripes are right with these bands along with...
