Coward - certainly one of(if not the most) frightening opening i'v heard: "i'm a coward, put yr knife in me" that line rains on any sunny day and all it's missing is the extream noise guitar assult that comes half a second afterwords, And I Like It! i'v always appreciated the more noisy side to them, a more thought of noise the assults yr ears for a reason, unlike the unthought noise of many other bands at that time.

rex jr., Saturday, 15 March 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

come on, it's not that hard to pick one. look how i did, it wasn't hard ;)

rex jr., Saturday, 15 March 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"motherless child"

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 15 March 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"Failure"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 March 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not going to be a popular choice, methinks, but I quite like the elegiac rendition of "Love of Life" on the live album, Omniscience.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

''seal it over''

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 16 March 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"Children of God"

stevo (stevo), Sunday, 16 March 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm... i actually still havn't heared the songs Jess, Ned, Alex and Julio mentioned. i must get'em.

rex jr., Monday, 17 March 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"Big Strong Boss"

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 17 March 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"blackout"

but it's hard to pick just one from their early period - i love the crappiness of "filth," the weird use of tape delay and random percussion.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 17 March 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

'Goddamm the Sun'

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 17 March 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Ignore the bullshit i said above. my vote goes to "Sex god sex".

rex jr., Wednesday, 2 April 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
if i'm feeling schmaltzy, it is "goddamn the sun."
otherwise it is probably "a screw"

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

"The Golden Boy That Was Swallowed by the Sea" is currently in the lead. This, of course, is always subject to change.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 9 March 2006 02:14 (nineteen years ago)

"children of god" seconded

grapple (grapple), Thursday, 9 March 2006 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

"Money is Flesh", Holy Money version. Playing that on the walkman, back in the day, made you feel like Godzilla as you walked around.

bendy (bendy), Thursday, 9 March 2006 05:33 (nineteen years ago)

"Raping A Slave". It's the one that goes "YA BURN IT/THEN YA EAT IT/YA EAT IT!/YA EAT IT!" at the end.

And the air hangs heavy like a dulling wine (Bimble...), Thursday, 9 March 2006 05:44 (nineteen years ago)

Live version of "Coward" from Public Castration Is A Good Idea. F'kn brutal.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 9 March 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

It's hard to pick only one, though, they've gone through so many phases...

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 9 March 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

"Trust Me"

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Thursday, 9 March 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

"The Sound"

Because that was played on their last tour and it (together with "Helpless Child") gave the impression they were evolving in yet another great direction.

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 9 March 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

i love The Sound. So amazing. Definitely a fave, but all these songs are great.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 9 March 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

One song seems sooooo beside the point. But at gunpoint I'd usually pick "You're Not Real, Girl".

Raw, Uncompromising, and Noodly (noodle vague), Thursday, 9 March 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

two months pass...
Hm...tough. I like a lot of their material, at least, that I've heard. I don't have all of their albums yet. At this moment, though, it's probably "Your Game," the live version of the "Cop" song "Your Property," off of "Body To Body, Job To Job." So insanely brutal...there aren't words to describe it. With an introduction of Gira screaming disconnected phrases of total self-loathing? and then the band coming in harder and faster than ever before? Good God.

For more melodic material, though, I'll go with the acoustic version of "New Mind" off of the "Various Failures" compilation. So much better and so much more heartfelt, soulful, and anguished than the original version on "Children of God" that it really makes me wonder about Gira's quality control skills.

Battle between "Trust Me" and "You're Not Real, Girl."

Ivan Gallardo (Ivan), Monday, 22 May 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

GOOD question. I'm partial to "New Mind" but all of the above have something going for them. Damn, I miss Swans, 'specially Jarboe-era Swans. They are my favorite band (and live show) of all time.

matt the queeg, Monday, 22 May 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

"You're Not Real, Girl"

kephm (kephm), Monday, 22 May 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

"Half Life"

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 22 May 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

I Crawled

S- (sgh), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 05:43 (nineteen years ago)

Damn someone already chose "Big Strong Boss". Well that leaves me..

RIGHT WRONG!!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 06:13 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, missed this thread last time.

Gotta go with the "YRP" track on Soundtracks For The Blind, which is actually a remake of "Your Property".

sleeve (sleeve), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 06:58 (nineteen years ago)

Tough one. Being a big fan, I think most are worth listening to. I'd say it's either "Sex, God, Sex", "Killing for Company", "Nobody", "In My Garden", or "Let It Come Down" as songs, but White Light from the Mouth of Infinity and Holy Money are even better collectively. Now, the live stuff is another matter entirely. Live, it's all good.

J.H. Malerman, Sunday, 28 May 2006 01:34 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I'm changing my vote to "The Great Annihilator." Try and stop me.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 14 October 2007 20:37 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

"Thug".

Jesus, Cop is absolute genius.
