A lot of their stuff doesn't.

"Mr. Writer," though, that's some godawful shit there.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 17 March 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

A classic big-sound mid-1990s Brit-poppy band in the tradition of the Manic Street Preachers, Blur, etc. I normally obsess over this kind of music, but I'm kind of cold about these fellows. One, the self-pitying lyrical content of their recent single, "Mr. Writer" manages to overshadow the decent musical quality of the track. I think it developed from a real-life incident where some naughty British press hounds wrote something nasty about the lead singer of the band. Boo hoo, quoth I. Also, I vaguely remember them insulting the Manic Street Preachers (or David Bowie, someone correct me if I'm wrong.) And as much as the Manics have insulted far too many bands to count in their career, well, I just prefer the Manics, plain and simple. And that's why I think the Stereophonics suck. Thank you. Come again.

soundnfury, Monday, 17 March 2003 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hah!

mei (mei), Monday, 17 March 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Because they're tedious pub-rock tossers who used to pretend to be Angry Young Men, then turned into the biggest corporate whores ever as soon as they got a sniff of success. I remember an early NME interview where they made a big show of slagging off non-Welsh bands and claimed every group from London just wanted to "sound like Morrissey". They soon learned not to bite the hand that feeds, however.

Plus, Kelly Jones is a muso fool who once said of Radiohead: "That's not about music, it's about technicians!" Because it can't be REAL music unless it's got guitars n' stuff, right?

Oh yeah: They used to be called (I swear to god) Tragic Love Company.

I really don't like them very much.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Monday, 17 March 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

...I'm originally from the next village to them, and they're known locally as a bunch of total wanker meatheads.

Avoid like typhoid.

And the Manics.... much more entertaining when they were called the Clash, I think......

russ t, Monday, 17 March 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

We all hate "Mr Writer" because it is TRUE! i.e. most music journalists' days are as grey, agonised, derivative and seemingly endless as the record is.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 17 March 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stereophonics are like Embrace but without even that much excitement. They are the epitome of the term dadrock. The best I can say about them is that I don't want to twat any of them quite as much as I want to twat Chris Martin from Coldplay or Fran Healy from Travis. Although, it's still like comparing dog shit to goat shit. I kinda always mention Stereophonics in the same breath as Travis and Coldplay, as they are all the same: boring, bland, soulless stadium dross. I actually feel physically quite ill whenever I hear any of these wretched bands.

The Manics are shit as well.

Calum Robert, Monday, 17 March 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Martin and Fran Healy are musical geniuses that are the best things to have happened to music since Britpop. Stereophonics, on the other hand.. Well, musically, I like their style, but their melodies just don't work out, and they don't make things any better by having a singer who sounds like Rod Stewart or Bryan Adams.

I prefer Travis or Coldplay any day. They are absolutely great while Stereophonics are no more than OK at best.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 17 March 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Never thought I'd say this but 'Julio to thread' please...

Calum Robert, Monday, 17 March 2003 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Calum surely you of all people must like the "Have A Nice Day" vid!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 17 March 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

no I'm gonna restrain myself.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 March 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Plus, Kelly Jones is a muso fool who once said of Radiohead: "That's not about music, it's about technicians!" "

Heh, funnier was when they started staying "Radiohead moan all the time, but they've never worked their fingers to the bone in a supermarket like we have!" Oh, NOW i want to buy your stodgy, unmelodic records!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stereophonics surely a candidate for one of the very worst rock bands of the past decade, and worst vocals...the bad news they have a new album on the way.

and to think they have sold over a million copies of their albums in Britain...the moronic masses.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"local boy in tne photograph" was nice, though

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I still think the whole first album sounds great, "Local Boy in the Photography" and "A Thousand Trees" especially. But boy did the energy and inspiration bleed out of them after that. Count me among those who can't tell them from Coldplay and Travis anymore, and considers that a drearily bad thing.

ara, Monday, 17 March 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Cast were much better

g (graysonlane), Monday, 17 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

they're brilliant, obviously. listen to kelly's growl on "step on my old size nines" and tell me he doesn't mean it. stepping on this MAN's old size nines would not be a good idea, let me tell you. anyone who would suggest otherwise has serious issues...

andy paltridge (andy), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say Kelly's growl is the main problem about them. Besides their inability to write good songs, but they did improve somewhat on their last album. "Mr. Writer" (despite self-pitying lyrics) is a great melody.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kelly's growl is the main problem"

"their inability to write good songs"

this is obscene short-sightedness. they are the heirs to hootie and the blowfish's pop-rock throne, surely?

andy paltridge (andy), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I kind of liked "Traffic" when it came out. I imagine it would grate a lot now. The best thing I can say about "Mr Writer" is that at least it's not as bad as "The Bartender And The Thief" which makes me want to bomb Cwmamam or whatever the place they come from is.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

they are the heirs to hootie and the blowfish's pop-rock throne, surely?

On major flaw here:

1. Stereophonics are British and only popular in Europe
2. Hootie & The Blowfish were Americans and only popular in the US

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Edward O ..... don't bother bombing Cwmaman - Thatcher effectively did that in the 80s.

In fact, you can blame Thatcher for the Stereophonics - if it wasn't for her shutting down all the pits, then the Sterephonics would have doen what ALL lads their age would have done for generations - gone down the coalmines.

russ t, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

by shutting the coal-mines she forced the stereophonics into scrounging a meagre living as successful rock stars...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Check out these moving lyrics and question the greatness of the 'Phonics no more!

He asked me "So where have you been?"
Let me think now let me see.
I stood once where Hitler's feet
Had stood when he made a speech
In Nuremburg in '38
When he tried to build a perfect race,
He said "Black men ain't gonna run alongside our perfect sons."
There was Dallas too, the library, the place they ended Kennedy.
We stood where Oswald took his shot, in my opinion there's a bigger plot.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

jeez, that sounds like an odorous poorer relation of Sympathy for the Devil ..

I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the Gods they made

I shouted out
"Who killed the Kennedys?"
When after all
It was you and me

One difference being with the Stones it was Lucifer at historically significant places/events, not the blooming Stereophonics. Talk about self-importance.

mick hall (mick hall), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

eh, mick, i think you missed this line...

"We stood where Oswald took his shot, in my opinion there's a bigger plot."

the phonics are shedding new light on a great unsolved mystery. their place in history is secure, and who are we to question them?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

...with the metal hairstyles, denim suits and mono brows, I think the Stereophjonics can be assured of a place in rock history.

Just like Status Quo.

russ t, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Namechecked in a Teenage fanclub song, d'you mean?

TMFTML (TMFTML), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

stereophonics are great. they write excellent songs. and yes that includes mr. writer.. as well as don't let me down, have a nice day, lying in the sun, a minute longer, maybe and several others.
now coldplay and travis really do suck. they clearly ripped off the 'phonics. and radiohead invented pretentious-core so i can't really include them in any comparisions.

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretentious-core? I can see why you'd want to avoid a comparison between Coldplay, Travis, Stereophonics and Radiohead: imho, they don't fit into the Britpop category; they're too esoteric, not quite as melody-driven and more experimental. They're the modern-day Pink Floyd, you could say, while most Britpop bands can be compared to the Beatles, or if they're a little edgy, David Bowie.

But surely no one's going to say that the Stereophonics are LESS pretentious than Radiohead. They're certainly more so, judging from Kelly Jones's continual bashing of Yorke in the press for "not being a proper musician", and the constant solipism and self-pity that appears in their lyrics. Yorke's self-pity, if you want to accuse him of that (and I wouldn't but understand the case of those that do) is at least textured and even self-deprecating. Kelly Jones is just self-inflated.

I agree that Travis stinks. I sort of like Coldplay, though. But Radiohead tops off everyone, with minimal effort. One song from The Bends obliterates the Stereophonics' entire back catalogue.

justin s., Monday, 31 March 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Welsh bands in order of greatness:

(1) Super Furry Animals
(2) Manic Street Preachers
(3) Stereophonics

I don't know anything about Catatonia, so please don't ask ;)

justin s., Monday, 31 March 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Catatonia and The Alarm would both belong before Stereophonics. Stereophonics are perhaps slightly better than Levellers tho. :-)

You are so wrong! What about Motorhead, isn't Lemmy Welsh?
And Sammo Hung are better than any of the above.

And hey ho, Mclusky Duh! Well, okay, only one of them is Welsh but the rest of them live here and THEY'RE OUR BITCHES NOW!!!

But Stereophonics? Please, they make me ashamed to be Welsh. I'd take Budgie or Terris or even Tom Jones of the Stereopongs

mei (mei), Monday, 31 March 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know about any of them :( My bad.

My list just exists to make the point that any other Welsh band > Stereophonics. I've never heard of these "Leveller" fellows, but they must be amazingly bad to be a few rungs below Stereophonics.

Ugh. Getting bad memories of the first time I listened to "Mr. Writer"... must... stop... writing.

Cable to fight 'Phonics sacking Sep 27 2003

, The Western Mail

STEREOPHONICS drummer Stuart Cable is consulting lawyers about his sacking from the band.

Cable last night said he was "stunned" to receive a phone call from the superstar Welsh band's lead singer and former best friend Kelly Jones saying he was out.

Jones said he had taken the "heartbreaking" decision to axe Cable because of "commitment" issues.

But Cable hit back, claiming Kelly and bass guitarist Richard Jones had told him to take time off from the US leg of the tour to recover from a minor operation to remove an abscess.

Cable said, "I'm a founder member of the Stereophonics and I would like to stress that I did not leave nor ever had any intention of leaving the band.

"As has been published, I underwent a minor operation whilst in the US and was unable to play two of the gigs. My doctor subsequently told me I was able to continue the US tour. However, Kelly and Richard suggested I return to the UK to recuperate for the forthcoming UK and European tours.

"Last Monday evening, Richard and Kelly telephoned me from the US and I was stunned to be told that they had decided to sack me. I still want to continue to be a part of the Stereophonics.

"I am, and have always been, a fully committed member of the Stereophonics and am very upset that Kelly seems to be saying that I was not committed to the band.

"I have now been put in the unfortunate position where I have had to place this matter in the hands of my lawyers."

Kelly Jones put out a statement on the band's website about Cable, who is dating TV presenter Lisa Rodgers. He said, "Me and Stuart started a band when I was 12. Emotionally to me this is heartbreaking.

"I love him like a brother, but commitment-wise there have been issues. We've tried resolving them but things stayed the same. Myself and Richard miss Stuart already, a band is like a gang and a lot of time he simply wasn't there."

mei (mei), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

So what now?

Will they suck more or less without Stuart and the occasional interjectoin of his mam, the superbly named Mable Cable (yes really!)

And anyone got any wicked goss? I loooove acrimonious band splits.

Yay!

mei (mei), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Stuart Cable is an utter cockfarmer and the fact that even the other Stereophonics think he is too rubbish to be seen anywhere near them fills me with joy.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

what is he going to do now? he is very ugly.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 29 September 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i would've made Cable the vocalist instead of Jones, and he would have to 'talk' the lyrics rather than sing...'sor, mr wrytah, way dornt yoo tel et like it reely ees yoo see'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 29 September 2003 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, yeah obviously Travis ripped them off!!! And they did it twice!!!!!! Travis' 1997 album "Good Feeling" is a total ripp-off of tha Phonics 1999 album "Performance and Cocktails"!!!! And when the Phonics went all laid back with "JEEP" in 2001, Travis jumped back in time again, and released "The Man Who..." two years before that!!!!

It must be really galling for the Stereophonics to have all their best worked ripped of by a bunch of Scots with a TARDIS!!!!!!!!

On Radiohead: "Put 'em in a room with just a stool, a lightbulb and an acoustic guitar and fookin' ENTERTAIN ME"

That's a lie. It was Jones/Cable and you know it. They also wrote My Way, Radio Free Europe and Mr Boombastic. All with just a stool and an acoustic guitar.

i actually remember jonny from radiohead once saying that the best thing about success was not having to hold down a job in a grocery store anymore.

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretentious-core? I can see why you'd want to avoid a comparison between Coldplay, Travis, Stereophonics and Radiohead: imho, they don't fit into the Britpop category; they're too esoteric, not quite as melody-driven and more experimental.

In 1997, that is, at their best, Radiohead still fit into the New Grave genre, which is where Coldplay and Travis belong (Britpop was mid 90s and considerably more upbeat and optimistic). Their experimentation during the latter years have gotten them nowhere anyway

And, btw, Stereophonics still suck, and probably still will. There are a lot of great "dadrock" acts, but they are not among them.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 29 September 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The New Grave wasn't a genre, it was something made up by Mark Beaumont and James Oldham in half an hour after the NME's Mansun interview fell through (or something...)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 07:46 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps they will get bill bruford in to replace him.

On Radiohead: "Put 'em in a room with just a stool, a lightbulb and an acoustic guitar and fookin' ENTERTAIN ME"
