"Come Sail Away"?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 March 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Glad you mentioned it, I uploaded Sister Christian in Jan as a reference point (to the concern of my friends) - HERE. It's Awesome.... in what capacity? you decide.

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 20 March 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I know nothing about Night Ranger other than that one song. How's their other stuff?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 March 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Night Ranger's other classic moment is the ebullient "You Can Still Rock in America", which is something like "Rocking in the Free World" crossed with "Don't Put Another Dime in the Jukebox". Nearly every mid-80s metal band had a few power ballads in the mold of "Sister Christian", but Queensryche's (later) "Silent Lucidity" would probably be my pick for a runner-up.

Oh Sherry - Steve Perry

Never cared much for Sister Christian, but its use in Boogie Nights was utterly sublime

one month passes...
I forgot about this thread! I am downloading all of these suggestions NOW. Will report back later.

Night Rager's finest hour remains "Don't Tell me You Love Me"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, I'll get that too. Alex - you must know tons of this shit. Any more?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

First thoughts

Listening to "Oh Sherry" now. I like it, but it's not quite what I was angling at. Not quite big enough. Not quite dumb enough. I've never heard this before, was it big?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Next:

Don't Tell me You Love Me. A straight-ahead rocker with some great synths. Nice chorus. Unexpectedly Aerosmith.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Come Sail Away" now. Promising start, bit of piano, ridiculous lyrics, waiting for it to take off...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

...and maybe it won't. No big dumb guitars?

THERE IT GOES. Jody, that was so on point. Well done! Queensryche still to come...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Having trouble DLing You Can Still Rock In America, which is a shame, because it sounds great.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

You want big dumb power ballads with guitars? Try these on for size:

Motley Crue - "Home Sweet Home"
Slaughter - "Fly to the Angels"
Cinderella - "Don't Know What You Got (Til It's Gone)"

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I kiss you!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Sister Christian is very big, very dumb song. I'd say the only stuff to get close to that would be Bon Jovi in their prime ("Dead or Alive" battles "Sister Christian" in the why-are-we-so-serious-about-this title fight), but to be honest, Bon Jovi were way better than Night Ranger.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you so much, gentlemen.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, I'm thinking Journey ownz this thread, actually.

J (Jay), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Found a cache of 80s rockers/ballads online-seeing as I'm a pasty brit, I only know a couple of these, but I'm taking them ALL

Whitesnake-Here I Go Again...
Warrant-Heaven
Damn Yankees-High Enough
Twisted Sister-We're Not Gonna Take It
Skid Row-I Remember You
Firehouse-Love Of A Lifetime

Among others...

Oooh, cross post-what's a good starting point with Journey?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The Outfield - "Your Love" (so damn catchy)
Sheriff - "When I'm With You" (power ballad with a killer chorus)
Mike & the Mechanics - "The Living Years" (can you say BIG)
Moving Pictures - "What About Me" (the whiniest 80's top 40 song)
Survivor - "The Search Is Over" (they had plenty of forgetten hits after "Tiger")
REO Speedwagon - "Can't Fight This Feeling"
Guiffria - "Call To The Heart"
Billy Squier - "Rock Me Tonite"

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 12 May 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Journey: you want "Faithfully"

Tesla - "Love Song" is another good'un.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 12 May 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I know nothing about Night Ranger other than that one song. How's their other stuff?

For those of you actually reading this thread, and wondering the same thing as Jody - There is a song called "Sentimental Street". Seek it out.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Monday, 12 May 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I always like moments of heated absurdity which capture the dying fall of their genre, the songs that went over the top and blew it forever. as far as 80s rock ballads go, I would recommend (in that perverse watching-a-car-crash way) Def Leppard's "Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad" from 1992. Firehouse were also at the end of the cycle, but being British I've never heard them, obviously.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Monday, 12 May 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

also: Extreme's "Song For Love", which is hilarious.

That cover is sooo classic! I must own...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Journey songs that are on par w/ "Sister Christian":

"Faithfully"
"Open Arms"
"Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'"
"Lights"
"Don't Stop Believing"

Other similars:

"High Enough" - Damn Yankees
"Babe" - Styx
"Isn't It Time" - Babys
"The Flame" - Cheap Trick
"Wanted: Dead or Alive" - Bon Jovi
"Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" - Meat Loaf
"Shooting Star" - Bad Company
"These Dreams" - Heart
"The Grand Illusion" - Styx
"Fooling Yourself" - Styx
"Time for me to Fly" - REO Speedwagon

J (Jay), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

A bit more up-tempo, but the biggest and cheesiest of them all has to be Europe's "The Final Countdown".

For more power ballads there's also Def Leppard's "Love bites" which was huge.

As for Heart, I'd go with "What about love" or "Alone" rather than "These dreams" which was a bit softer IMO.

Seb, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I went with "These Dreams" because of the way the guitars kick in in the chorus. And because "Alone" sucks. I mean, "These Dreams" isn't nearly as good as primo Heart, but as far as this thread goes, little is!

"follow your heart" or "magic power" by triumph

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Monday, 20 September 2004 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone remember the video for "Sister Xian"? All I really recall is it being heavy on the Catholic school imagery and cars...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 20 September 2004 20:45 (twenty years ago)

That video was filmed at my high school! Before my time there, unfortunately. I'd like to see it again.

Nemo (JND), Monday, 20 September 2004 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Oh, man — a Catholic school?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 20 September 2004 21:01 (twenty years ago)

bonnie tyler - "total eclipse of the heart"!!
Gn'R -"Don't Cry", "November rain"

not quite in the same neighborhood, but "take my breath away" fits great next to any of these on a mixtape

jones (actual), Monday, 20 September 2004 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Damn you, Thread Reviver because now I'll have this song in my head for the rest of eternity.

Thea (Thea), Monday, 20 September 2004 21:29 (twenty years ago)

It's catchy, but I'm sure it'll pass. That is, until it's revived again!

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 20 September 2004 21:44 (twenty years ago)

what about "god gave rocknroll to ya"? can't remember if it gets suitably epic but it seems to fit somehow....

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 00:08 (twenty years ago)

It's a public school, actually (San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California). I think one of the members of Night Ranger went there, or at least that was the rumor. They probably made it a catholic school in the video for the sexy uniforms. Or maybe "Sister Christian" was a nun?

Nemo (JND), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:18 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
I DON'T REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS SONG:

Sister Christian
Oh the time has come
And you know that you're the only one
To say O.K.
Where you going
What you looking for
You know those boys
Don't want to play no more with you
It's true

You're motoring
What's your price for flight
In finding mister right
You'll be alright tonight

Babe you know
You're growing up so fast
And mama's worrying
That you won't last
To say let's play
Sister Christian
There's so much in life
Don't you give it up before your time is due
It's true
It's true yeah

Motoring
What's your price for flight
You've got him in your sight
And driving thru the night
Motoring
What's your price for flight
In finding mister right
You'll be alright tonight

Motoring
What's your price for flight
In finding mister right
You'll be alright tonight
(repeat)

Sister Christian
Oh the time has come
And you know that you're the only one
To say O.K.
But you're motoring
You're motoring

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 24 July 2006 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

All I know is that when this song came out my best friend had a brother named Christian & I don't even need to tell you more.

cracktivity1 (cracktivity1), Monday, 24 July 2006 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

It's a tender coming-of-age ballad, is all.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 24 July 2006 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

I get it now! The singer wants her. He doesn't want her to be motoring.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 24 July 2006 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

I remember the song being written about the singer's sister, so Tim... your interpretation is totally Appalachian.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 24 July 2006 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

i thought that the song was for a female NY Cabbie...but that is just probably a piece of that oh-so-common Night Ranger apocrypha we all hear so often throughout our lives

J. Grizzle (trainsmoke), Monday, 24 July 2006 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

Heh heh...remembering 12th Grade chemistry class, overhearing this anecdote: "Yeah, so my mom says 'I saw that Sister Christian video on TV this afternoon...my Lord, that singer's ugly!' 'What singer, what are you talking about?' Turns out she meant Twisted Sister!"

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Monday, 24 July 2006 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

Sister Christian is great, but not as great as REO Speedwagon's "Take It on The Run" or Boston's "More than a Feeling" which are the prototypes for the hair metal powerballad.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 24 July 2006 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

No discussion of power ballads can be complete without mention of April Wine's immortal Just Between You and Me. And for a great Don't Fear The Reaper knockoff, look for Sign of The Gypsy Queen.

Familiarize yourself with April Wine. It's time.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 24 July 2006 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

TIM,

from songfacts.com:

+ Their drummer, Kelly Keagy, wrote this about his sister. Essentially the song is about her coming of age.
+ The original title was "Sister Christy," but the rest of the band thought he was singing "Sister Christian," so that became the title.
+ "Motoring" was their term for driving around with their friends. (thanks, Chris - Annapolis, MD, for all above)

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

Two decades later, Night Ranger's two lead guitarists, Jack Blades and Kelly Keagy, reminisced about their brief visit to San Rafael High and the role of the "Sister Christian" video in their careers. The song turned out to be their biggest hit, peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard chart, and the video was an MTV favorite throughout that era.

"The song was getting a lot of radio play, and we needed to get a video shot fast," Blades recalled last week when he and Keagy returned to San Rafael High for an interview. "We were on tour at the time, and they told us, you need to get this done, like last Wednesday.

"We were just a bunch of kids ourselves," he said. "MTV was brand new. It was exciting. But we weren't actors, we were musicians. They just told us, you stand here, you stand there, in this scene you dance. We just wanted to play music. We were sort of old-school that way."

The video director picked San Rafael High because it looked like a quintessential American high school, with its graffiti, diseased oaks, Greek columns and WPA buildings. The band was happy because they all lived in Marin and Sonoma counties and didn't have to drive far.

"I remember this place," Keagy said, looking around the campus, which has not changed one iota since it was built in 1922. "The auditorium, with the pillars. This is where we parked the green Cadillac."

For those who don't remember every detail about the video, it featured a montage of high school images, such as blond girls in caps and gowns, guys in football uniforms, and an unscripted food fight that actually occurred across the street at Sam's Family Restaurant. The final shot was of the band and a few pretty girls -- two of whom were San Rafael High students -- riding off in a green Cadillac convertible.

For the auditions, my friend Martha prepared her best pieces, a monologue from "The Children's Hour" and a powerful rendition of "Don't Cry for Me Argentina." A star in every school play, Martha was very professional and confident, and was not surprised when she was selected to be in the video.

What did surprise her, however, was that the final video prominently featured pretty cheerleaders randomly picked from campus, while Martha's hard-fought role was relegated to a single nanosecond in a crowd shot.

For Martha, it was an abrupt introduction to the cold hard truth of show biz.

For Night Ranger, it was a time of charity.

"Yeah, we had professional actresses, but they let us cast a few students in the video, too," Blades said. "That was great."

In the end, it wasn't even the cheerleaders that generated the most ink, though. It was the nuns riding through campus on roller skates.

"Later, we got all these calls about it," recalled Keagy. "One woman in Wisconsin said, 'Is this a song about nuns selling dope to school kids?' We said, 'Uh, sure.' The song's about not giving it up before you have to, not letting go of innocence, but people can read into it whatever they want."

Specifically, the song is about Keagy's little sister, Christy. Keagy wrote the song at his apartment, near Divisadero and California streets in San Francisco, after he had just returned from a visit to his hometown in rural Oregon. He had been struck at how fast his teenage sister, 10 years younger than him, was growing up.

"After we started playing it a lot, Jack turned to me and said, 'What exactly are you saying?' " Keagy recalled. "He thought the words were Sister Christian, instead of Sister Christy, so it just stuck." He added that the real Christy was so mortified when the song came out she nearly changed her name.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

Night Ranger's two lead guitarists, Jack Blades and Kelly Keagy

aka, the bassist and drummer

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

Europe - Carrie
Bon Jovi - Runaway
Loverboy - When It's Over

None of these go over the top like "Sister Christian" but they're worthy of inclusion.
