Very exciting. It had better be good.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Thursday, 20 March 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

very terrifying. this could be the worst thing ever. prediction = Dre's will have higher peaks and lower troughs, Big Boi's will be more listenable?

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 20 March 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

ALBUM OF THE YEAR. You heard it here first.

Evan (Evan), Thursday, 20 March 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't this sounds awfully similar to the Blueprint2 debacle..?

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 20 March 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but Outkast stomp all over Jay-Z.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 March 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

and two discs divided by two people > two discs divided by one monstrous ego

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 20 March 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

and the chance to see what each one of them is really all about will be kinda fascinating. who here thinks that boi's disc will be better than dre's?

Neudonym, Thursday, 20 March 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I just hope Dre's disc sounds like his guest appearance on Slimm Calhoun's The Skinny, "It's OK". That's the bizarre, funky sort of thing I've been anticipating a solo effort of his to sound like.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Thursday, 20 March 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope they rhyme about nice things, so I can enjoy it.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 21 March 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Outkast are your parents.

Big Boi is the stern, foul-mouthed father. He's a fun-loving guy, but he gets stuck dealing out the discipline because he's married to one of those permissive hippy moms.

Mama Dre lets the kids run wild. The neighbors call to complain, but when the kids get home, Dre just smiles and shows them how to make necklaces out of elbow macaroni and twine.

Few can resist this parental archetype, especially in a time when actual mom & pop units are few and far between. Trial separations, on the other hand, are quite common, and don't have the same primal appeal, so it's a bit awkward when Big Boi and Dre move into separate apartments.

Oh, the move has its up side. Dad can finally relax and hang out with the guys. Mom can take some yoga classes and explore her individuality. The kids are entertained, indulged, and showered with gifts as each parent tries to outdo the other. Still, we can't help feeling some regret whenever we bike past the old house.

EC, Friday, 21 March 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't help thinking about the Self Portrait thread here. I wonder what Dylan fans were thinking c. early 1970 when a double-LP (his first in more than a year) called "Self Portrait" was announced. Breathless anticipation, "best of the year" predictions. And then, er, um.

Not to say that the Outkast record will be a disappointment but just to point out how difficult it is to predict these things and how pointless to speculate on how great they will be.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 21 March 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"this has never been done before" they emphasize. except by motherfucking Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 21 March 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha and Kiss (although Kiss was smart enuff to figure out that selling EACH side as a seperate record would be a better way of fleecing their fans).

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 21 March 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to imagine, though, that neither Big Boi nor Dre's discs will begin with "All the Tired Horses." I can hope, anyway.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 21 March 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Imagine if they did though. . . what a wonderful dream. . .

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 21 March 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

AND the Melvins (in tribute to Kiss), no?

So, I'm itching to hear this thing. The waiting is killing me, whether this is indeed up to standards, or a total farce. Is the ETA still later this month? Any ILX0Rs with good connex (Matos?) heard it yet?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Sunday, 11 May 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm doing it for Uncut but am still waiting for the promos from BMG; hopefully should get it sometime this week, as I also have to interview them. Needless to say, will post something about it on CoM when I do get it.

Marcello Carlin, Sunday, 11 May 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The release date was moved back to sometime in July, I believe.

adam west (adamwest), Monday, 12 May 2003 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Typical. They probably have to "finish the skits" or something, gah.

Andre doesn't drink or smoke and is a vegetarian. Big Boi raises pit bulls and goes to strip clubs constantly. Maybe eventually the differences in their habits led to more hanging out separately?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 12 May 2003 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

So, "Ghetto Music"? Some good ideas, bit of a mess.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 10 July 2003 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Ghetto Music is great. There's another track that's been leaked, but I don't have a link to it. People who've heard it compare it to Prince around Sign o the Times.

adam west (adamwest), Friday, 11 July 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i flit between excitement and terror at the thought of this record

"b.o.b." had some good ideas and was a bit of a mess too...it tends to be what they do for their lead off single, innit?

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 July 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - "bit of a mess" = 50% of the reviews sign o the times got at the time

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah true, and it took 3 or 4 hearings for "b.o.b." to click with me. I'm not going to play "Ghetto Music" again until I've got a better quality version of it. I'm not sure the fast-verse/slow-chorus thing works though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 11 July 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Also Sign O The Times is a bit of a mess James!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 11 July 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard ten tracks and they were terrific:

BIG BOI:
Ghetto Music. Hardcore booty bass with church organ and Loose Ends type Eighties R&B break.
Church. Broken beat hip-hop with soul chorus and hard rapping. Gospel segment at the end.
Flip Flop Rock featuring Jay-Z and Killer Mike. Fat Kraftwerk electro. Sung chorus. Scratching by DJ Swift.
The Way You Move. Booty salsa, chorus sung by Stevie Brown.
Unhappy. Electro-funk, sung chrous.

DRE:
She Lives In My Lap. Electro soul with breakbeat. No rapping but singing.
Roses. Midtempo pop, sounds a lot like Prince. Good song, lots of organ.
Spread. A bit like early breakbeat house. No singing, just rapping. Horns, jazz piano, trumpet.
Prototype. Slow jam. Bass, groove, singing.
Love Hater. More singing. Electric guitar eruption, cool jazz with beautiful guitar, horns.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 11 July 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

there isn't a single note/sound/whatevah on sign o the times that isn't precisely where it should be

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Right down to the audience members on the one track.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

mutherfukker's a control freak I tell ya!

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

From what JoB sez above this sounds grebt.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

flip flop rock is a thing of beauty and power.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

How have you people heard this thing?

Evan (Evan), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

does the first verse of "she lives in my lap" (the, uh, tone) remind anyone else of the first verse of "the ballad of dorothy parker"? (plus the chorus at one point is this close to literally being "she's always in my hair")

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 31 July 2003 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

omg please tell me this'll be out in time for me to include it in the sott book

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 31 July 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

well they've always reeked of prince, I think it's probably the main reason I've loved them so damn much (beyond the local booster "they tore down my elementary school to build dre's high school" east point in the house)(atl-repping in 100% of why I luv bonecrusher, that and the peter warrick jersey)(peter warrick???). I remember reading an interview with them in between aquemini and stankonia (the one with beck maybe?) where they talked about how their next album would have a song like prince used to make before whatever happened to him (ie. before hip-hop made him blink) and arguing with friends about which song they were talking about (obv. it's "toilet tisha"). oddly the, um, worst track off the album I've heard off speakerboxxx so far is the single.

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 31 July 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

flip flop rock is a thing of beauty and power.

Maybe I should, but I have no doubts about this.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 31 July 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, ok. I thought that was the name of the new album. I see now.

You're still right.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 31 July 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

puh-leeze don't let this be the actual album cover

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 31 July 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell us the best tracks; I don't want to waste time d/ling the skits (if any)!

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You criminal, running a radio station and destroying the LIVELIHOOD of a business that way. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-but outkast skits are actually good!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the only tracks I got I listed above. there's a fake long ass (7 minutes I think) track masquerading as "church".

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

That album cover shot is awesome!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah they're good but I want to get to the MEAT of it first! Gotta make choices when you're on a dialup. Thanks Blount. Ned, I wish I had a smart-ass remark and corresponding winky for you. You are more winky than I could ever hope to be.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

That cover looks like a box of Nerds. CLASSIC!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

it looks like a the cover my sister would make for her cd-r of it

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, so the whole album has leaked, and not just ghettomusick, she lives in my lap, and flip flop rock?

adam west (adamwest), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

#1. Brilliant. Going to be simply brilliant. If it's possible to oneup Stankonia, this may do it.

#2. i flit between excitement and terror at the thought of this record
"b.o.b." had some good ideas and was a bit of a mess too...it tends to be what they do for their lead off single, innit?

-- jess (dubplatestyl...), July 11th, 2003.

B.O.B. was nowhere near a mess. Unless there was a gigantic drum of funk that someone tipped over and spilled everywhere, in which case, more mess plz.

David Allen, Friday, 1 August 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing about ghettomusick is how, having previously warned against not bringing that thang unless you plan to bang, they do precisely that. the electro parts (which are 65%) of the song are a bit lacking to my ears.

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 1 August 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

B.O.B was a mess. It was a glorious mess.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 1 August 2003 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Just heard one of the new songs on the radio - oh my god, it's so good.

Sam J. (samjeff), Thursday, 7 August 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, how can i argue with something as poetic as a "massive drum of funk"...i am appropriately cowed.

nb: it wasn't a criticism. or, at least it wasn't me saying "b.o.b." was a bad song, just a little too overstuffed. they've never been a great singles band, anyway. (in fact they're one of the few bands who i enjoy as album artists anymore. [ryan pitchfork to thread.])

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, "miss jackson". i never heard "elevators" on the radio.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

two more songs were leaked the other day:

Big Boi - The Way You Move

http://www.arista2.com/mp3s/the_way_you_move.mp3

Dre 3000 - Hey Ya

http://www.arista2.com/mp3s/hey_ya.mp3

adam west (adamwest), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

and besides: i'm not particularly concerned with "proper synthesis" or anything, but there's a big difference between a band who should know better, who has ample access to a studio (too often the problem), and some kid mucking around in his bedroom (see just about every great dance single, ever.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 August 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"hey ya" sounds like it was co-written with frank black!

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 7 August 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard the 5 songs out there and I've been impressed by them all so far. I'm excited about this album.

Will Dre ever rap again?

ben welsh (benwelsh), Thursday, 7 August 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck me Mitch is right OTM!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

amen. I've already played in ten times this morning trying to think of anything better. The other songs are getting almost as much play, but not for lack of quality. O

nly "Ghettomusick" has had me hesitate, and the way it stands next to the other track, although i haven't a clue how they are sequenced, has made it stronger.

Why couldn't they release this album at the beginning of the summer? Was it really not finished? This is THE summer album, and i have to cram it all into just a couple of weeks.

badgerminor (badgerminor), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

When is this coming out???

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 August 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Aug 26, 2003?

badgerminor (badgerminor), Friday, 8 August 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

no, it got pushed back until sometime in september.

adam west (adamwest), Friday, 8 August 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

September 9th. And if "Hey Ya" is any indication (the only trk I've downloaded with my dial-up connection...I love it so much I'm going to force myself to wait to buy the damn thing,) it's going to be uncontested for the year. Damn...

M Specktor (M Specktor), Friday, 8 August 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

fucking hell - "hey ya" DOES sound like Frank Black!!!

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank god it's good Frank Black!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

frank black yeah for sho
but also cody chesnuTT
up in there somewhere?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 8 August 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

September 21 / 22. It's still not finished. Dre has until next Monday to finish his album. Big Boi has been ready for a while.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - this doesn't surprise me

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

where are we up to with this ?
what i've heard so far is ace.

when's the actual thing released ?
are even the dates records come out on hip hop time now ?

the way ya move = *so* lady cab driver by the way !

piscesboy, Sunday, 24 August 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)
