i seem to remember from what some posted from the jargon file that the "troll" part actually came from "trolling for responses" like, you know, fishing -- the action then connected to the beast with the same name, but technically untrealed to the original usage.

Hey don't sell yourself short. There is, of course, a grain of truth to JP's allegations of elitism. But there's just as much evidence here to the contrary, all sorts of points of view melting into each other and getting all blurry, the way points of view should. The problem is, JP is unwilling and probably incapable of seeing such things, and is plainly a bit of a dick, if not an outright fool. His point has been debated before, on countless threads. For now, though, we'll just focus on making fun of him until he goes away.
