This is the thread where we talk about what a genius masayuki Takayanagi was!

I got 'Mass projection' and 'Gradually Projection' (w/Karou abe on reeds) today (I've been pleasantly surprised with what I've found in the racks for the last couple of weeks) and it's blowing my mind.

Incredible music!!!

There's been loads of talk on Jimi Hendrix lately and if anyone likes the feedback stuff and they are interested in the way its used in say, a more improvisational context the you must fucking get this if you can.

Also search: His two discs on PSF ('Call in question' (a must) and 'live independence' (not a must but he is playing accoustic and its good)).

'Katakei kokan' and one of my first improv discs (his other disc w/Karou abe) is a crappy recording (especially listening to the projection discs) and their understanding isn't as good but if you love this guitarist as much as I do then you prob will bite the bullet and hand over the cash like I did.

I have done a thread on Abe BTW. he is triffic too.

ha! go to my abe thread! revive it!!!!

its got only like, 7/8 replies and half of those are mine.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 22 March 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i downloaded "mass projection" - pretty good stuff, beating borbetomagus to the free-squall punch by what, 9 years?

your null fame (yournullfame), Saturday, 22 March 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah that's right. I thought of borbetomagus while listening through this.

heh, null. even though we have our differences on the some free jazz stuff its nice that we can agree to this.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 23 March 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio I'm too drunk but I will contribute to this thread. Suffice to say, Takayanagi is right there with Rowe, Bailey, Hendrix, Kaiser amongst the best who ever had the privilege of working with electricity. My favorites are April is the Cruellist Month, Indenpendence, Free Form Suite, and We Now Create (which is under leader Togashi's name). You are so right that that Kotokai kokan was v. disappointing. Of the three trio discs those two did, I totally prefer Gradually Projection. I just think that I've heard so much full-bore improv, the other ones are harder to get into. I really like the exploration of space evident on the gradually disc. Anyway, more to follow when I wake up...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 23 March 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks diamond: when you wake up tell me abt 'april', 'free form suite' and 'we now create'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 23 March 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Alan Licht raves abt 'Axis: Another Revolvable Thing' by Takayanagi, but it doesn't seem to have been reished on CD.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 23 March 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

''I really like the exploration of space evident on the gradually disc.''

I really like that yes. You know its good improvising when they can pull off different things so you get 'taking no prisoners' stuff like 'mass' and fairly quiet-ish things like 'gradually'.

I also have the 'Live at Moers' disc but the band doesn't get going really though I like the Lee Konitz cover at the end.

Yo Julio!!

Thanx for the linkage to da threadage. Comparison to the likes of Hendrix, Baily, Kaiser, and Borbetomagus?!!? Hey, I'm all over that! Sounds as though it probably sounds a bit like Blue Humans when Arthur Doyle was with them...? or the Arthur Doyle stuff with Rudolph Grey on guitar maybe...?

Thanks for the tip, Julio.

I picked up a reissue of masayuki takayanagi's 'angry waves live', which documents a live gig from abt '85 or so. this shows a completely different side to his playing. very little distortion and his playing really is pleasant enuff. the trio don't really match up to the some of the discs takayanagi put out in the 70s but its ok.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 June 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have picked up on Takayanagi big time since reading this thread before. Deconstructive Symphony w/ Abe is terrific as is New Direction/Call In Question. The tribute disc w/ O'Rourke, Lonberg-Holm, & Weasel Walter is good too. Still on the hunt! Thanks to everyone for the recommendations..... and Hi again, Julio!

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Sunday, 29 June 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Live At Moers 1980 is also really good

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

why?

when i heard it the band never really picked up really. I might re-listen soon.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Weasel Walter, Jim O'Rourke and someone else did a tribute album!

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I read a review of it but haven't heard it. apparently its horrible.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It6s not horrible, IMHO. Given that it is a tribute to a free improv guy, O'Rourke, Weasel Walter, and Lonberg-Holm did OK with it. THey pretty much go apeshit. Judging the quality of covers of free-form music is a bit difficult. The true irony would be to say its 'SOng So-&-So" and then have it in no way resemble that song...

I have a bunch of Takayanagi CDs that no one has mentioned—does anyone want to trade for pre-77 Rallizes stuff? I saw this link there.

What I've got:

"Three Improvisations on a theme: Qadaffi" — this is a real title! Sort of like the sekigun angle of early Rallizes

"Axis: Another Revolable [sic] Thing vol 1"
"Axis: Another Revolable [sic] Thing vol 2" — if you're not desperate for the 17 min drum solo on vol 1 I think this fits on one disc

850113 excellent, noisy trio improv from 1985

"Independence: Tread on Sure Ground"— 1970 masterpiece with Yoshizawa, Sabu-chan and a guy on "time conduct"

I have a few other things as well so if you're interested in trading, let me know.

No 1980s Rallizes please - LA

Libbey Adams, Friday, 9 April 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, i have Takayanagi's Free form suite, call in question and live
independence also a fair few Rallizes from the 70s. I would really like to get hold of Independence;tread on sure ground, or april is the cruelest month?

Thanks, mik

so 'axis another revolvable thing' is a thing of awesome-ness - get a blindfold 'cause 'gradual projection' track found here could be mistaken for some of malfatti's current work. This need to cut all ties, even if you know you can't get away.

Action direct has just been being reissued. Alan licht is at it again on the liner notes (his 'bitches brew' comment doesn't exactly fill me with any confidence) (and its pricey grr).

Lots and lots of reissues - not gotten much so far, however Complete "La Gamba" looks yummy

calzino, Saturday, 22 August 2020 15:09 (five years ago)

didn’t realize there was a thread either, i usually post about him in the “japanese jazz” thread

d'oh !!

budo jeru, Sunday, 23 August 2020 00:43 (five years ago)

teruto soejima, who wrote the linter notes to the two "axis" discs, wrote a book on the japanese free jazz scene that was translated last year. recommended if you want to read the only book on the subject !!

https://www.thewire.co.uk/shop/books/free-jazz-in-japan-a-personal-history-by-soejima-teruto

(you can still order it directly from public bath press i think)

budo jeru, Sunday, 23 August 2020 00:49 (five years ago)

it's mad as fuck listening to the noise fest Mass Hysterism and following up with Free Form Suite, it's not doing my insomnia any good but what a trip!

calzino, Sunday, 23 August 2020 02:50 (five years ago)

That book looks good

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 25 August 2020 17:55 (five years ago)

I hadn't heard anything of his until the April is the cruelest month reissue from last year, but I was sold. Unfortunately I have to wait until October for my CD copy of Axis/Another Revolvable Thing to get here, but fortunately I got downloads with my order - it's tremendous. I love how it all builds to that epic climax.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 25 August 2020 17:57 (five years ago)

shout out to public bath pressings, they have some other cool stuff besides the free jazz book, like a collection of seiichi yamamoto essays:
https://www.publicbathpress.com/

and besides the reissue, blank forms also recently put out this book of translated takayanagi interviews:
https://blankforms.org/publication/blank-forms-aspirations-of-madness/

also, vinyl pressing for the new direction unit repress sounds very high quality to me. def worth picking up imo.

anyone ever hear his early laid back bossa nova bop jazz record flower girl? pretty hilarious in comparison to pretty much everything else he ever did (that I've heard, anyway) but also quite nice on its own terms

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Saturday, 29 August 2020 21:15 (five years ago)

that record is fine ? i guess i'd just rather listen to grant green or kenny burrell or whatever if i'm in the mood for that.

the "axis" records are interesting in that they have a bit more warmth to my ears, some hesitancy, a willingness to express and explore a greater variety of timbres and textures — which contrast with the anarchic, nihilistic power of the "eclipse" LP and "april is the cruelest month". the two duo discs w/ abe from 1970 that DIW released in '01 seem to split the difference, in that they're not exactly a barrage of fortissimo, but abe seems to eschew all tenderness in his playing and the feel is sort of sharp and anxious.

and then there's "解体的交感" AKA deconstructive empathy:

love this calzino-esque exchange in the comments:
