Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 23 March 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Conway Hall is just down the road from me.

I WILL NOT STALK I WILL NOT STALK I WILL NOT STALK...

Is this going to be more of that free jazz stuff that I don't get? Sigh.

kate (suzy), Sunday, 23 March 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

it will be free jazz type stuff though I just looked at the conway hall webpage and nothing is listed so I'll contact them tomorrow.

does anyone know how to get to church st for the derek bailey thing(there's no nearest tube and I need to know abt buses)?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 23 March 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to go to a Tube Station Party that night anyway. Gah, what tube station shall I go as? My closest is what, Chancery Lane? How do I dress up as Chancery Lane? What's a Chancery anyway?

kate (suzy), Sunday, 23 March 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

hehehe...I don't know. go dressed as a lane instead.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 23 March 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Stoke Newington is a pain-in-the-arse to get to. This site's pretty good at getting from here to there.

john-paul, Sunday, 23 March 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to the Conway Hall one. Kate lemme me educate u 'bout the mysteries and wisdoms of free jazz... ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 24 March 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for the link john-paul. i've got a route.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 March 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I was toying with the idea of going to this. What should I expect Marcello?

Samson, Monday, 24 March 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

If the RFH gig was anything to go by, expect that track "The Individual" on Ladies and Gentlemen I R Floating , but extended by two hours.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 24 March 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Which one were you thinking of attending?

Samson, Monday, 24 March 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

''If the RFH gig was anything to go by, expect that track "The Individual" on Ladies and Gentlemen I R Floating , but extended by two hours.''

that's an OK track but i somehow hope it isn't going to be like that.

samson- he's going to the j pierce one.

I just hope that the tickets havem't been snapped up (I mean it is jason pierce).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 March 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I know somebody who is mates with Jason Pierce. I could blag the guest list if getting in is a problem. THat isnt it. It's my diary! : - (

I'm just getting into free jazz. Andrew Innes made me a copy of Coleman's Free Jazz that is blowing me away at the moment.

Samson, Monday, 24 March 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

er...I just checked my account. thanks for the email.

just sent one back.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 March 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Same here, Julio. Same here.

Samson, Monday, 24 March 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the geezers from SHJ came into the shop the other day and dropped off some flyers/posters. He said they expect that Leo Smith will play solo for the first half of the gig, and that the 2nd half will be made up of various combos - Pierce will prob. do a duet w/ someone, in a similar style to the one w/ Evan Parker on 'Amassed'. They can't afford to hire a piano this time.
Of course this cld all change on the night - that's improv! This gig has been a bit of a last minute thing - Smith is over here recording w/ SHJ - which is maybe why there isn't a lot of info abt it, but AFAIK it's still on. Really looking forward to it - apparently Smith hasn't played in the UK for at least 10 years. The other day I listened to a v. early, and terrific, Anthony Braxton rec w/ Smith and Richard Tietelbaum (sp) - improv meets electronica, 35 years ago.

Not sure I can make the Bailey gig - why does DB always seem to play in the least accesible venues?

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 24 March 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

hey andrew its at 8:30pm and it should only be half an hour by bus I think.

but yeah it kinda sucks but if you can make it i'll see you there.

I also have smith w/braxton on BYG and delmark. good stuff. can't wait.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 March 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, it's a lot of money to listen to a style of music I'm not even sure that I like. I'm already supposed to go to three gigs this week - Quickspace, Capitol K and Appliance. So I'm going to have to give it a miss.

Still have to come up with a tube station costume, though...

kate, Monday, 24 March 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that Kate from the Lollies??

Samson, Monday, 24 March 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The fans are coming for you, Kate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 March 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What did I tell you about women and free jazz/ improv? Never go to one of those gigs if you wanna pick up chicks, I talk from bitter experience...

Dadaismus, Monday, 24 March 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Hold on... did you say Derek Bailey at RYAN'S BAR? Count me in!

Dadaismus, Monday, 24 March 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate Lollies in Stalking Jason Spaceman Shockah!!!

No, not even for Jason would I listen to Fr33 Ja22. But I'm still working on my teenpop bubblepunk hit single sensation, Fr33 Ja22 Boi, so maybe I should attend for inspiration... ;-)

Four gigs; I forgot about Saloon. Yeesh!

kate, Monday, 24 March 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

What did I tell you about women and free jazz/ improv? Never go to one of those gigs if you wanna pick up chicks, I talk from bitter experience...

heheh, my mate gail might tell you different... ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 24 March 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate Lollies in Stalking Jason Spaceman Shockah!!!

It would be more interesting than Horton Hasbeen!

Samson, Monday, 24 March 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

what's yr shoppe andrew?

zemko (bob), Monday, 24 March 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Bob, I work in the jazz dept of a v. large rec shop in central London. Now that Tower has died the death, I think it's prob. the largest jazz dept. in London, certainly central London (dunno abt Mole Jazz, haven't been there for ages - the 'new' Ray's in Foyles is nice and all, but the stockholding isn't huge, and the Virgin megabore has suspended a lot of their buying in order to fund the Tower takeover)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 24 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't possibly be HMV in Oxford Circ, 'cos (a) their jazz dept. isn't that big, and (b) I'm a regular there & have never knowingly come across AL.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 24 March 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

''Hold on... did you say Derek Bailey at RYAN'S BAR? Count me in!''

heh, dadaismus if you want to say hi then I'll tell you that I have a black 'puma' bag and am/look 23 yrs old.

''What did I tell you about women and free jazz/ improv? Never go to one of those gigs if you wanna pick up chicks, I talk from bitter experience...''

well ryan's bar is a bar so you never know: chicks might come in just for a drink and, as they hear the sounds from derek bailey's guitar they might ask someone (ie me) to explain this stuff and...you never know ;-)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 March 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

so its tonight at abt 8:30 pm

http://www.ryans-n16.com/

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

saw derek last night. I am v happy ;-)))))))))))))))))

great to see what he does with his fingers to extract those wonderful sounds out of his guitar and milo fine was really on fire (he was on percussion, keyboards and clarinet). and he looks like Moby too.

Derek was on electric throughout. I was right at the front and when he did his feedback bits I got such a warm feeling. yummy.

(there was also a johnny greenwood lookalike so I thought that abt melissa immediately: she would've enjoyed the gig).

can't wait for saturday now.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 March 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I was at the gig too and enjoyed it but have come to the conclusion that I am not really a fan of Derek Bailey. I think he's an entirely admirable musician but his music is an artistic dead end. He resembles some weird species of animal which has evolved as far as it can go and can now go no further. All you are left with is a kind of arid display of technique. Basically, give me Keith Rowe anyday! I was talking to one of my friends in a pub afterwards and he said to me, "Well if YOU don't like Derek Bailey, does anyone?"

Dadasimus, Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

derek b vs. keith rowe - now i'd pay serious money to see that happen!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

''Basically, give me Keith Rowe anyday!''

Tell this to Bob snoom hehe.
I love derek bailey.

Its not an artistic dead end at all simply bcz Derek was one of the first to come up with new ways of improvising on guitar. He made it possible! There is nothing even remotely like him but you can hear certain sounds coming out from other guitar players and think: 'he's been listening to derek bailey a bit'.

Derek bailey vs keith rowe might be a thread for the future but i'm not gonna do it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ha! pressed submit too quickly there marcello.

I would def queue up for that one.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed he came up with new ways of improvising on guitar - 30 years ago.

Dadaismus, Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The second part of that, dada, is actually improvising with other ppl and adapting to what they have to offer.

no one can just come up w/new techniques like you seem to be implying (I mean its a bit of a novelty that does wear off).

He has the sounds and he knows how to extract them but, crucially, he knows when to play them and he can adapt it to whoever he is improvising with.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe Julio. It really comes down to basic the fact that I don't really like what he plays all that much!

Dadaismus, Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

''Maybe Julio. It really comes down to basic the fact that I don't really like what he plays all that much!''

*sticks tongue out at dada*

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i stand up for derek and his angle on pretty much anything - he's always great fun to see live. i'm not sure he every really "adapts" to a given improv grouping / situation though - i think a criticism eddie prevost has levelled at him (still at least he doesn't let people get away with saying he makes "meta-music" like they do about eddie p.- yek! - he plays drums. that's it in my book). keith rowe sounds great the first time you hear him then you kinda figure you yrself can stick springs & bolts & slinkies & shit on yr guitar and not do too badly. i prefer joe morris and eugene chadbourne & kevin drumm & oren ambarchi but then they don't really question the "flow" of the music as cantankerously as derek does - which i love. i dunno . i'll think something different abt the whole thing by tomorrow i'm sure.

bob snoom, Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree absolutely that Bailey does not really interact THAT much with other musicians - he pretty much seems to play more or less what he wants most of the time. In contrast, I think Keith Rowe DOES really play with other musicians - I saw him play as a duo with Evan Parker (on tenor sax) and then immediately afterwards play with AMM and Rowe's contributions were startlingly different each time. As for that crack at Eddie Prevost being a mere drummer - somewhat of a low blow...

Dadaismus, Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

just like keith rowe is a guitarist, as far as i see it. don't get me wrong - these guys are great (or at least better than dan hipgrave!), but quasi religious hyperbole and fan worship (i'm not saying that's you!) i have no time for. i respect the guys for their vision and hard work but they don't redeem me of my sins or anything.

bob snoom, Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with you on that one Bob. But when it comes to "quasi religious hyperbole and fan worship" Derek Bailey is right up there with Keiji Haino - have you ever read a bad review of a Derek Bailey CD in Wire? And he releases a dozen a month! Ha ha.

Dadaismus, Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

a v fair point that both of you raise. especially regarding haino who has released a lot of crap but i think derek does interact w/musicians just bcz the sounds produced aren't wildly diff from disc to disc does not mean otherwise.

I'd say that bailey pulls musicians towards his world and that they can't do much abt it. for proof listen to anthony braxton improvising w/derek.

I like this discussion anyway.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 March 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The music that DB was making 30 years ago sounds very diff from his 70s work, his 80s work, what he does now. I think there are plenty of recs where DB clearly responds to + interacts w/ the other player(s) ie 'Music and Dance' is a v. different rec from the Mirakle alb. Yes, he has a fairly fixed sound/idiom, but DB's willingness to take on new/different playing situations keeps his music fresh and changing.

Marcello, are you going on Saturday? Wld be gd to have a chat w/ you.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

he is andrew. he said so on ILE.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaaahhh, yet one more reason for Handsome Soundartist to bunk the second night of his installation... I think he was sort of involved with the LMC (at least that was his excuse for having a beard) so maybe he will want to go.

Though HSA's installation is so much FUN!!! that I actually kind of want to go and play with it for another day. Though I do appreciate that it's an awful lot of work for him to have to do to set it up and take care of it.
