Swiss Beatz: Celtic Frost vs. Krokus

eh eh tarden, I understand that you like stereotypes... We could build a whole thread on that subject but sadly ILM isn't the most suitable place (ILE on the other hand...). Anyway, even if I'm Swiss I won't get tetchy because of your "opinions" regarding my country. As for Krokus and Frost... quite oddly I've never heard about those bands, let alone listened to their stuff. The only swiss groups that spring to my mind right now are Kleenex and Young Gods.

tarden you ignorant slut, Krokus ruled the universe! How can you argue with brilliance like "Midnight Maniac"? Their impeccable cover of "Ballroom Blitz"? "Screaming in the Night", for gosh sakes! Actually, I don't really like Krokus that much, actually, but I always thought Fernando Von Arb had a really cool name. And you have to give it up for an album titled...wait for it... To Rock or Not to Be.

Krokus was an ace name for radio ads: "coming this julyyyy... to the Civic Auditorium.... Krooookuuuussssssss...." But shit, naming your metal band after a flower. How femme.

Apart from the Frost's truly lamentable glam-era circa COLD LAKE, they've had precious little in common with Krokus, so it's hard to really compare them. I'd vote for Celtic Frost for three reasons. Number One: "Triumph of Death" by Hellhammer - Tom Warrior's band prior to C.F. who were completely over the top. Number Two: Celtic Frost's gloriously skewed cover of Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio." Number Three: In the winter of `93, I found myself dating a rather irritating woman who had the annoying habit of leaning over and cutting up my food at restaurants (like your mother used to do) and was a flagrant church-goer. One day, while perusing through my record collection, she happened upon TO MEGA THERION by Celtic Frost, charmingly adorned with an HR GIGER painting of Satan using the crucifix as a slingshot. She was shocked to the point of utter speechlessness, and we broke up on the spot (thank...er...god). Amen, Celtic Frost.

i'm embarrassed to not have heard much cf but i'll stand up for krokus. i find headhunter enjoyable and energetic enough. "screaming in the night" is damn fine by me.

a little calmer now, i'll concede that a lot of headhunter is pretty unexceptional though far from the most frighteningly useless record in history. i think i just get excited about anything i can find for a quarter that's ok. if sleater-kinney records came for less than a dollar, i'd be greil marcus.

Celtic Frost, of course. If you can find Tom Fischer's autobiography, pick it up -- it's a really good read, actually. Mind you, he does go on about _Into the Pandaemonium_ a lot...

anyway, i have to side with celtic frost - granted mark storace (?) of krokus had some ridiculous hair, but the frost even had him beat for fashion sense circa "morbid tales." they're wearing 3 or 4 cows apiece. plus, you know, hellhammer - tell me that record's not punk.

surprised there isn't more celtic frost talk on ilm! the other thread was long and kinda worthless so i revived this one. (ok there is also one for their new album, but i don't wanna talk about that)

i'm not sure i get pandemonium. its fun, but dudes voice is annoying. he makes me think of the "berserker' guy from clerks or the wild and crazy guys from the old SNL. maybe i just hate foreigners.

weird choice for a cover, sure, but they shat all over "mexican radio".

i always think i'll like metal, but it never works in practice. i don't really have the vocab to talk about it, but i thought there'd be more stuff about them from ilmers.

Once they let Martin start doin' a very poor imitation of Only Theater of Pain-era Rozz Williams (which, itself, is ace of course), it all went to hell.
