Songs with which to open up on the highway

Today I'm just pulling onto the 880 and the R&B station has moved to ads, so I switch and catch Dreams, by The Cranberries, just starting. I pull over to the fast lane, drop on the gas, and the strings sweep over me as the scenery speeds by, faster and faster. Next thing I know I'm doing 90. What a great feeling. So, what I want from y'alls is songs with which to accelerate with on the highway.

NOt wishing to be obvious but something 'motorik' by NEU! would be excellent - 'Hallogallo' maybe?

philT, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've written some songs with which to accelerate on the highway. I hope you get to hear them one day. I hope *I* get to hear them one day. In the meantime - try Lloyd Cole. 'Rattlesnakes' (the song) or the first solo LP (with magnificent opener 'Don't Look Back') - both songs actually contain the word 'Highway', come to think of it.

Sterling: should you really be posting while driving? This is even more dangerous than using a mobile...

(PS I *know* I owe you an email. Pologies.)

'Roadrunner' by the Modern Lovers.

Won't Get Fooled Again -- regardless of Nissan.

Damn, youn, you stole my answer--but luckily I got to use it in the "songs everyone would like" thread. "Roadrunner" was built for moments like these!

I'll have to think about this for a little bit longer, but PhilT is probably onto something. I actually was listening to the first track off of the first Neu! album on the subway, the other day, watching the lights and other trains whizzing by the window, and there's just something about that song that lends itself to acceleration and movement.

Shine a Light by Spiritualized oughta do it

An uncool answer: U2's Where the Streets Have No Name. Cooler: Joy Division's No Love Lost. Fugazi's Latin Roots.

"O.D'ed on Life Itself" by BOC. "Machine Gun" by the Commodores was a good call too.

duane, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, I think I've got one. How about Roadrunner, by the Modern Lovers?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 4 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'no love lost' was a good call.. also 'ride on josephine' - bo diddley... & of course.. 'fuck tha police' - nwa.. depending on whether you're driving to a pick-up or a picnic... plagerised poetic license reconised.

'The Yodeling Hoover' (the Soft Boys)
'Come Play With Me' (the Wedding Present)
'Love' (the Poster Children)
'The World Is Turning On' (the Pooh Sticks)
When you finally get to cruise control, Nick Drake.

Track 9 on the new Orbital album (can't remember what it's called, on repeat so you don't have to hear Track 10...

Robert, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

didn't we do this question already? I distinctly remember suggesting LTJ Bukem's 'Promised Land' mix-cd. Actually mos techno is prettty good in these situations, special mentions: Carl Craig - Landcruising, Model 500 - Deep Space, Maurizio - M.

Omar, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sure, techno and house, or just repetative music, come into their own on a long stretch, but accelerating brings other things to mind. Slop / Slop with Orange - Charles Mingus
Crystal? - Autechre
Al-Naafiysh (it's time)- Hasmim
Children at Play - Max Tundra
Theme from Medical Hospital - Lalo Schiffin
Fly Life (brixton radio edit feat glamma kid) - Basement Jaxx
James Brown - Live at the Apollo
Heatwave - Martha and the Vandells
