Marcello states below in another thread that Altered Images' 'Bring me closer' was one of the 10 greatest singles of the 1980 (too true).... what do you think they were?
Mine'll follow when I scour my collection.....

russ t, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't do it, i can do 100 tho...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Close To Me is in there somewhere, but don't ask me to break it down. Was California Uber Alles a single?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Go on, curse you can.....
Blue Monday, Peek a Boo, Let's Go to Bed, Bigmouth strikes again, Say Hello Wave Goodbye, Temptation, Love Action, Only You, Love is a Stranger, Everything Counts, Living on the Ceiling, Theme from SExpress, Holiday, Running up that hill, Don't Give Up, Girls on Film, Fade to grey.... or even the greatest hits by the likes of Brother Beyond, Dave Stewart and Barbra Gaskin and Jimmy the Hoover ...there's a great few to choose from!

russ t, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

any ten i do will just negate another ten, but my true faves at the mo:

into the groove, i can't go for that, blue monday, pump up the volume, close (to the edit), planet rock, a town called malice, sign o the times, straight outta compton, pacific

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

not the 'greatest', but great nonetheless

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

at the moment (in no particular order):

Borderline, Open Your Heart (HL), When Doves Cry, Absolute Begginers, Sign o' the Times, Victims, Together in Electric Dreams, Pump Up the Volume, Billie Jean, High Energy

JML (JML), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Good lord Steve - that list looks just about perfect to me!!! Amazingly similar list.... I'd prolly switch Into the Groove for Borderline and Pacific State for something like Gigantic... but other than that... Ace!

GADZOOKS! - JML has just nominated Borderline aswell.... brilliant!

DaveyC, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Robin Goad (rgoad), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Adam A - Day Before You Came - ABBA's finest moment by miles, I reckon. That'll definitely be in my top 10, too. Hard to believe that's over 20 years old....

I'm so horribly uncool that it's completely unnecessary to list the artists on mine (INPO obv):

The Message
I Ran
Born in the USA
Sister Christian
Magnificent Seven
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic
Rock Lobster
Where Eagles Dare
What You Need
Walk Like An Egyptian

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 27 March 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Fascinating suggestions.. I really don't want this thread to die, but I supposed there have been other 80s lists before (links would be really handy). I'd be interested to know what your didn't make the top ten, because I didn't discover much underground music till 89 and much of the less well known tracks are new to me, or I didn't even know they were from the 80s. Anyway, off the top of my head -

Thieves like Us - New Order, I could have picked 3 others

I Can't Go For That - Hall and Oates

Stone Roses - Made of Stone

Cameo - Word Up

Tour de France - Kraftwerk

Boogie Down Bronx - Man Parrish

Rockit - Herbie Hancock

Box Elder (cover) - Wedding Present - 89', if not, then My Favourite Dress

Strings of Life - Rhythim is Rhythim

Mr Fingers - Can u Feel it

and the Butthole Surfers, but they didn't do singles

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 27 March 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I never join in these list threads, but what the hell:

'Let the music play' - Shannon
'Love comes quickly' - Pet shop boys
'This charming man' - The Smiths
'I could never take the place of your man' - Prince
'When I think of you' - Janet Jackson
'Duel' - Propaganda
'Those first impressions' - The Associates
'Therese' - The Bodines
'Modern Love' - David Bowie
'Icing on the cake' - Stephen Duffy

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 27 March 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

JtN can we have a special Nipper Signal like the Bat Signal to be used if you ever find "Icing On The Cake" on a karaoke?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It will be a huge limp wrist projected into the nite.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 27 March 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

'Icing On The Cake' - now that is a song I have literally not heard since its release - what was that other one he did?

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 27 March 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kiss Me" Stevem as in "Kiss me with your mouth / your love is sweeter than wine." The album with those on I used to have on tape and I remember it being pretty good.

russ t, Thursday, 27 March 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Baby Wants To Ride"
"Panic"
"Party Fears Two"

me list (no particular order), limited to ten as requested:

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 27 March 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

doing 80s lists always gets a bit silly - its all a bit like 'i remember THIS tune, and THIS one so nerr - i always loved them, even when i was just 7 years old...' - mentioning no names of course (erm, me...)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 March 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It is difficult - especially after reading thru other people's contributions and thinking "Shit, I forgot that one"....

russ t, Thursday, 27 March 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I only liked three of my picks in the 80s.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Good point. How many of these tracks are original first loves, and which are retrospective picks. I've got six that I loved back then, but they were guilty secrets at the time

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 27 March 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Panic", "Winner Takes It All" and "Two Tribes" I loved at the time.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I Can't Go For That - Hall and Oates - the shame, can you imagine what my metaller friends would have said if I fessed up.

Stone Roses - Made of Stone - This wasn't a guilty secret back then. It is now.

Cameo - Word Up - Thursday night, early evening, mid-80s, family gathered around the TV for Top of the Pops - enter THE codpiece!!!

Tour de France - Kraftwerk - Been cycling all day, early evening, many many miles from home, in a converted barn with a strange kid from school. His drunken mother started screaming at him, and I hid in the loft where I found this record.

Rockit - Herbie Hancock - The video.....

Box Elder (cover) - Wedding Present - I listened to the Brassneck EP with my best friend all night in the basement of my parents house. At dawn he offered me a lift somewhere, I chose to walk instead and listened to this on the way out of town. 24 hrs later I was on the other side of the world.

Strings of Life - Rhythim is Rhythim - loved it at the time, but didn't know what it was till years later. The case with so many records back then.

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 27 March 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i never even heard 'strings of life' until about 1995 - i had heard all the records that had sampled it before tho

i think i always did like the ones in my original 10 - except maybe 'into the groove' tho i didnt hate it but i wasnt big on Madonna, she was just ok...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 March 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I really hated "When Doves Cry" - it was too slow and too weird both at once, ew!

(My actual listening 80s are littered with brilliant records I heard and loathed - "Police Officer", "Pump Up The Volume" and "Beat Dis", "What Difference Does It Make?" etc.)

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

...and Teardrop Explodes' 'Treason'.
And It's Immaterial - Ed's Funky Diner (how splendid was this record? And 'Driving away from home')
Was The La's 'There She Goes' in the 80s?
Plus TFF 'Sowing the Seeds of Love' (and many of the others).
And Bowie 'Ashes to Ashes'.
And the one I can't believe I left off.... Furniture's utterly breathtaking 'Brilliant Mind'. What a record.

russ t, Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Every record I listed is a record I loved in the 80s (a couple a few years after their releaase dates, but all of them before 1990).

I am CRUSHED that I neglected Cameo (although I'd pick "Candy" or "She's Strange" over "Word Up!"). I should have included a Depeche Mode song, too, and I fully endorse the shout-out to Cherrelle.

"There's No Stoppin' Us" (Theme From "Breakin'") - FEEL THE FLASHBACK POWER

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Human League - "Holiday 80"
Fad Gadget - "Ricky's Hand"
John Foxx - "Underpass"
Ultravox - "Sleepwalk"
Depeche Mode - "Everything Counts"

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(BTW, I don't like the term "greatest", so that's just a list of the ones I like best @ thiz moment)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

OMIGOD THE LEATHER NUN!!!!!!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "Prime Mover" = r0x0r!! I was going to put Ex Post Facto's "Oceanic Explorers" or Freur's "Matters of the Heart" but I thought those perhaps a bit too obscure.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

...remember the Leather Nun's version of 'Gimme Gimme Gimme (a man after midnight)'? Fantastic!

russ t, Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The entirety of _Force of Habit_ is beyond classic. "Jesus Came Driving Along", "I Can Smell Your Thoughts", "506", "Pink House" (or, as I like to call it, "Fuck John Cougar Mellencamp")... GOD I wish I had that CD with me today!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a great promo shirt once, with big black lettering that said "I Can Smell your thoughts' on the front. It caused a few comments, that one.

russ t, Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

So Dan, you do own the CD itself? I'll burn you a copy of that if you need.

As for the question at hand -- lists from posters, too many choices.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

And It's Immaterial - Ed's Funky Diner (how splendid was this record? And 'Driving away from home')

Oh yeah! Do you remember the remix of this where they went on about Jack Kerouac? That's definitely number 11.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard that mix, no.
Whatever happened to It's Immaterial...?
(talking of Kerouac I'm reading the Life story of William Burroughs at the moment in which he features strongly - fantastic book)

russ t, Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

So Dan, you do own the CD itself?

OF COURSE I DO! Who do you take me for? ;-)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

They're second album wasn't up to much, there was a Pet Shop Boys copy called 'In the Neighbourhood' which was pretty good but on the rest of the album they turned into the Blue Nile to no great effect. The frst one, was great though, especially the singles and 'Space'. I do remember that they were scousers and they were both called JOhn.

I've just googled it and This site contains very little information.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers Gatinha.
I'll need to get checking second hand shops as I only have the 2 singles I mentioned. I used to have the first album on vinyl but it got lost along the years somewhere.

russ t, Thursday, 27 March 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

the top 10 that no one appears to have mentioned yet (advance apologies if you have):
grace jones - slave to the rhythm (blooded)
frankie... - relax
rufus & chaka khan - ain't nobody
madonna - live to tell
thompson twins - hold me now
joe smooth - promised land
pet shop boys/dusty springfield - what have i done to deserve this?
michael jackson - the way you make me feel
bananarama - more than physical
bon jovi - livin' on a prayer.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 27 March 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

God, Grace Jones - how could I forget one of my favourite singles ever, 'Pull Up To The Bumper'?!

Michael Wells - nice that someone apart from stevem and me has mentioned the Nanas - as I said above, perfect pop, and there can't be anyone on this board who doesn't have a soft spot for them and at least one of their hits ..... fun all the way, unpretentious good time girls who, despite apparently not being able to sing or dance, must've been doing something right. Damn sexy, too.

russ t, Friday, 28 March 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The exclusion of Bananarama from my ten favourite singles from a pop golden age shouldn't be interpreted as me not liking them. I mean Mis-Teeq wouldn't get into my 00s top ten but they're great!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 March 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Funky 4 + 1, "That's the Joint"

billstevejim, Friday, 23 April 2010 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

Okay.. that was supposed to be my 1st post on a new thread, but it turned out "The 10 best songs from the 80's" already existed.

So now I actually have to make up my 10......

billstevejim, Friday, 23 April 2010 02:43 (fifteen years ago)
