Did you know that Shel Silverstein made freaky music?

I listened to "Freakin' at the Freakers Ball" a while back, but didn't pick it up because it was a lil too expensive. It’s on blue thumb from 69 and had some heavy-ish drums and his singing voice, which is all low and weird and high and squeaky at the same time. And all the songs are about illicit things. Drugs, Sex, Freaky sex (s&m type shit), hippies. It totally weirded out my childhood. I can’t think about the man the same after I heard that album.

Better than the Fugs and the Holy Modal Rounders, that's for sure. The songs are funnier and more tightly arranged, and basically about the same shit. Plus he sings in a super-goofy alternately shrieky and gravelly beatnik voice.

I only know the Dr. Hook version of "Freakin' at the Freakers Ball"--it's great! He also wrote "Cover of the Rolling Stone" and the excruciating "Sylvia's Mother".

He wrote The Winner, which as performed by Bobby Bare is an old favourite of mine. Bare did several Silverstein songs, some of which are horrible, such as Daddy What If.

Classic-the film "Who's Harry Kellerman, and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?" Silverstein wrote the score, and he has a brief cameo in it as well, playing a singer in a rock band.
