My mailman brought me a present today! Here's something I won off eBay last week -- a 12-CD disco box! (This is called Disco Box but has nothing to do with Rhino's 4-CD Disco Box. Some dodgy non-label put this together; they're real CDs w/ real artwork, but there's no information included other than the track listings.)

(I already own a great many of these songs in one format or another, but I'm very happy to have them all in one place now.)

Track listing copied off eBay -- I don't feel like correcting any typos.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd really like it if you'd say on here what the finest tracks are from these cds. I'm hoping the Machine track will be there.

Bryan Adams '79?

'souvenirs' by Voyage is searchtastic

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even know where to begin w/r/t recommendations. There's so much great stuff here. But lemme give a shout out to Beautiful Blend's "That's the Meaning," Patrice Rushen's "Haven't You Heard," The Ritchie Family's "The Best Disco In Town"... goddamn.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

and all the Chic. And Yazoo's 'don't go' obviously. 'hands up' by Ottoman would be there if it was from my dodgy non-label.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

WOW

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Jody -

Are those the Disco cds with the bad Patrick Nagel-ish portraits in purple/fuchsia/... as covers? If so - congrats. They're some of the absolute dopest disco comps out . Enjoy!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus I love how they go into some classic freestyle and Funhouse classics on the last cd! You know a NYC'er put these together.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Are those the Disco cds with the bad Patrick Nagel-ish portraits in purple/fuchsia/... as covers?

Yes indeed!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

>"Plus I love how they go into some classic freestyle and Funhouse classics on the last cd!"

Oops. Sorry. That would be on CD 10!

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Loads of great stuff! My favourites are all the Chic/Sister Sledge stuff, the Trammps (though I bet the Zing is not the one combined with Penguin At The Big Apple, which is among my favourite ever records) and Candi Staton's Young Hearts Run Free.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, so much great stuff. Discs 4,5 and 7 look the business. Nicely reflecting what a broad church disco was (is).

To think people used to burn disco records and listened to Styx instead.

also, why no Flirts? There should be at least a handful more of Bobby O tracks. (The lack of 'take a chance on me' by Waterfront Home is really wrong).

Do not search ABBA. Most annoying music ever.

However, I like Do The Hustle, because at the beggining, it sounds like their advising suicide. "DO IT.... DO IT... DO IT"

David Allen, Friday, 28 March 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought #12 last time I was in NYC and it's so great. I wish I could remember where I got it. The only problem is it really makes me want the lengthier originals. Of ALL of the songs. But 30 bucks, wow!

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 28 March 2003 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Coincidentally, I've got #12 in my hand right now. I'm about to pop it in my Walkman and take this shit outside.

disco stu (disco stu), Friday, 28 March 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I want these but the auction site says this: "PLEASE NOTE: There may be a factory defect on a couple of the CD's, which causes a faint clicking noise in the background of some of the songs. The set you receive may or may not have this defect, I just wanted to be upfront about this."

I don't like the sounds of that. Do any of your cds have this Jody? Could it be that some of these were mastered from the vinyl? I wouldn't really care if there were vinyl clicks and pops, really.

But yeah... DISCO.

original bgm, Friday, 28 March 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like the sounds of that. Do any of your cds have this Jody? Could it be that some of these were mastered from the vinyl? I wouldn't really care if there were vinyl clicks and pops, really.

So far I've listened to three of the CDs in full (which is like sixty-some-odd songs) and I've only heard noise on two of the tracks -- one has a buzzing noise that sounds like a receiver feeding back and one just has the typical vinyl pops. Everything else sounds gorgeous.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

And I don't hear any faint clicking... yet.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 March 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the lowdown. I think I'm going for this regardless. Just too much goodness to pass up.

funkytown is a great song...

JBR, You are the ILM queen of box sets. Way to go.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Friday, 28 March 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

#12 sounded amazing when I was out strutting/prowling through downtown Brooklyn (you know, past the prison and 'round those parts). The streets looked like the copter shot at the beginning of the "Heart of Glass" video; the sky was dark and clear and the air was filled with lights (walk signals, beams from cars, the glittery on-off of people's apartments).

This mix is even better when you don't have a track listing at hand and haven't memorized what's on here -- you get enough "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" to go YYYYYYYYESSSSSSSS! (and like those great dodgy non-label megamixes of yore, you get most of the cut anyway, not just a couple of bars for effect) and then minutes later when you're nearly catatonic from yr own retardo-rapture, "Must Be the Music" drops right in and takes over Indeep's shift without sacrificing a moment's work. And you go YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYESSSSSSSSSSSSS! again. Stunning.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 March 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

pardon me while I pick my jaw up off the floor

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 28 March 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

NOW I am truly jealous and amazed.

Samson, Friday, 28 March 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

WOW

Disc 10 is SO FUCKING UNBELIEVABLE OH MY GOD. This disc is a perfect snapshot of Hot 97 circa 1986.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Rah! I remember you talking about this. :-) Perhaps mp3s could be arranged to be placed somewhere...? ;-)

two weeks pass...
ok.

today i dropped the forthcoming jimmy 'bo' horne comp into the deck

.. initially my reaction was oh fuck this 70's disco groove,

but i hung in there and i am now loving Spank (as featured above!) , Dance ACross the Floor, Let Me , though his flowery version of Carpenters Close to You is a little too saccharine for my tastes

.. but damn when the fat bass and brass kicks this is total dynamite..

i may have to re-evaluate my TK compilation once more (tis overexposure to that damn KC and the Sunshine track that does it in for me ..)

and just who has sampled/looped that guitar lick from 'dont worry about it' tis really getting under my skin, sure some one has lifted that lick.

any ILM'ers know ?

Disco is the answer, man. Forget it. This is the answer to our lives, is disco.

Bimble, Sunday, 22 April 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

I will talk later about my K-Tel record when I have a better copy of the vinyl. Do the Hustle! "Walking IN RHYTHM MOVING IN SOUND" I always wanted to figure out what song that was, who it was by. Now I have it on a cheap vinyl LP from 30 years old.

FLY ROBIN FLY! UP UP TO THE SKY!!!

:) :) :) This is music of my childhood, for sure.

Bimble, Sunday, 22 April 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

It's missing Disco Juice.

as great as that set is, it's mostly chart hits to some degree, no? Disco Juice I think was a bit more underground.

i have decided that after i turn in my thesis tomorrow and i stumble home drunk from whatever bar i'm probably gonna be at, i am going to BLAST THE FUCK out of this box

Patrick Adams had lot's of hits didn't he? Anyway you play it.. Disco Juice should be on every single disco compilation. It's that good.

And...

I asked Patrick of any special memories in his different roles, and as an Engineer he's most proud of Eric B & Rakim. At that time he developed certain technique that made their records stand out. Rakim has a rich percussive voice and Patrick decided to use a RE20 (This is a Bass Drum Microphone) on him. This allowed Rakim to be strong without popping and deep without a lot of Equalization. He added a room effect on the drum sample tracks to give them a more live feeling. All of the loops and samples on the first three albums are tight and in key.
The result is a very musical work that can be enjoyed and Patrick adds; "I was totally surprised to read that Paul McCartney loved the LP."

MRZBW, Monday, 23 April 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

Adams had hits...the Musique tracks included on the box set were pretty big, but I don't think Cloud One was.

dan selzer, Monday, 23 April 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

Don't forget Phreek.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 23 April 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

That was on a major label, but I don't think it was nearly as popular as In the Bush and Keep on Jumping.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

Okay here's my new (old) K-Tel record, it's called Dance Machine from 1976:

K.C. & Sunshine Band - That's The Way I Like It
B.T. Express - Do It (Til You're Satisfied)
Van McCoy & The Soul City Co. - Do The Hustle
Jim Gilstrap - I'm On Fire
Johnny Bristol - Hang On In There Baby
Little Beaver - Party Down
Gwen McRae - Rockin' Chair
Trammps - Hold Back The Night
Blackbyrds - Walkin' In Rhythm
Silver Convention - Fly, Robin, Fly
LaBelle - Lady Marmelade
The Ritchie Family - Brazil
Kool & The Gang - Higher Plane
James Brown - Sex Machine (this is a really fascinating version than the one I'm familiar with, obviously updated for disco or something)
Hamilton Bohannon - Foot Stompin' Music
George McCrae - Rock Your Baby
Betty Wright - Wherer Is The Love
Miami (Featuring Robert Moore) - Party Freaks Part 2
Jimmy "Bo" Homme - Gimme Some
K.C. & Sunshine Band - Get Down Tonight

I'd be a liar if I said I know half the songs on this thing, but it sure does have a nice little smattering of ones I do and it keeps me entertained the whole time.

Bimble, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't understand that "Disco Juice" was actually a song until now, I thought it was just two compilations. So I will give that track a try. This comp has convinced me that Disco is so much more effective and fun in a compilation type situation rather than trying to tackle things artist by artist, which is what I tried to do some years back and petered out with pretty quickly.

Bimble, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

The compilations called "Disco Juice" looked pretty interesting as well.

Bimble, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

The Disco juice comps are good, althought there's at least a half a dozen Adams/P&P comps out there now, perhaps too many to choose from.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

xpost, though basically saying what michael is...

Well, Disco Juice is an artist compilation, in the sense that the producers and labels were often the key, and the Disco Juice comps are just 2 of many many many reissues revolving around P&P, which was Patrick Adams and Peter Brown. Cloud One was one of Patrick Adams bands, who's Disco Juice and Atmosphere Strut were underground classics.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

I'm actually having flashbacks now to listening to my dad's disco 8-Track tapes. There were two of them, it was some double disco set, with the same little pictures on them of this silhouetted couple dancing and wearing bell bottoms (flares) I think the man was in green and the woman in red or maybe vice versa. And I remember Fly Robin Fly and The Hustle. And I remember sitting there, alone, roughly 7 or 8 years old and playing these things on my dad's 8 Track Tape machine. I've never actually remembered doing this until now. Crazy.

Bimble, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

Wait. Now I'm remembering...I think after my dad died I found he had a copy of Patti Smith's Horses on 8 Track Tape. I never played it though. I think there might have been something wrong with it. I don't know. But I definitely remember trying to keep that thing just becuase it was an 8 Track Tape.

Bimble, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

Well, duh, likely I couldn't play it because I didn't have an 8 Track Machine. That would explain it!

Please continue with whatever you were doing...

Bimble, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

It needs the Hustle!

I went back to "All Night Passion" recently and its much better than I remembered.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

Set It Off by Strafe is brilliant, but don't make the same mistake I made and seek out the version by the Harlequin Fours too...TERRIBLE.

musically, Friday, 27 April 2007 05:53 (eighteen years ago)

so wrong!

haitch, Friday, 27 April 2007 06:12 (eighteen years ago)

it's better than the strafe version!!

haitch, Friday, 27 April 2007 06:12 (eighteen years ago)

musically does not want to get this party started right

Michael F Gill, Friday, 27 April 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

I love that "Disco Juice" has a bar in 7/4.

Eric H., Friday, 27 April 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

Disc 12 of this comp might be the best single disc disco comp ever.

Eric H., Friday, 27 April 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

The instrumental bases of both songs are fine but the Strafe version vocals are genuinely sinister and it kicks the other version to the curb, no question.

musically, Friday, 27 April 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

Disc 10 is my favorite I believe

Michael F Gill, Friday, 27 April 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

If you don't agree that Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra's "Love Theme" is the best disco track ever, then we'll have to step outside I'm afraid.

Bimble, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 06:02 (eighteen years ago)

Else I'll make you eat a wah-wah pedal, etc.

Bimble, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

I don't agree!

dan selzer, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

Love Unlimited Orchestra are NOTHING next to Love Unlimited (no orchestra).

These comps have some great tracks on em... I usually hate the mastering on them and don't buy them though (I know nothing of this exact series but I find the nuances in the mastering between all of these tracks to be part of the pleasure). You have to have the Strafe "Set It Off" on vinyl, has really great shit mastering that makes that record. Not enough Paradise Garage stuff on here for me either. Visual, Gwen Guthrie and what, no FUNKY Soul Makossa?! Good Times, fuck...GREAT TIMES!
