nyeh, I don't like lists. But hearing Johnny Cash's "Personal Jesus" has been making me think I must listen to more by The Mode.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes you must.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

"Tora! Tora! Tora!"
"Shouldn't Have Done That"

"Waiting For The Night"
"Never Let Me Down Again"
"A Question of Lust"
"Lie To Me"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, has it been discussed around here how "Lie To Me" is utterly brilliant?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Enjoy The Silence
I Just Can't Get Enough
Never Let Me Down Again
Walking In My Shoes
Personal Jesus

Barrel Of A Gun (Underworld mix 2)
World In My Eyes
People Are People

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

you can tell that when it comes to picking 10 by older bands i've never heard the albums...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:52 (twenty-three years ago)

At the VERY LEAST, _Construction Time Again_, _Black Celebration_, _Some Great Reward_, _Violator_ and _Ultra_ are urgent and key.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Geez. If you'd asked me ten years ago, i'd have run away screaming (but constant exposure to 'em has softened me considerably).

"Shake the Disease"
"Never Let Me Down"
"Just Can't Get Enough"
"Everything Counts" (live)
"I Feel You"

Not 10, but certainly more than i thought i'd own up to.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bless your heart, Mr. Maxwell. :-)

Everything Dan sez has been extremely on point. Obey him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt, have you heard "Lie To Me" and "Fly On The Windscreen"?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

(haha now every knows what my #11 is)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

there's no way i can listen to all those albums now Dan! you know i very nearly bought 'Songs Of Faith & Devotion' when 'Walking In My Shoes' came out but then i heard 'Condemnation' and i thought it was the worst thing ever (i was 15 etc.)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

"Condemnation" is an absolute grower of a song. Also, _SOFAD_ has "I Feel You", "In Your Room", "Rush", "Higher Love", "Mercy In You" and "Judas" on it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, "Lie To Me" is the song that turned me into a raging Depeche Mode fanatic; I'd always liked "People Are People" and thought that _Music For The Masses_ had some good moments on it, but it wasn't until I borrowed a friend's copy of _Some Great Reward_ that I went, "OH MY GOD THESE GUYS ARE AMAZING" and it was specifically when I got to track 2. (My deep adoratioin of "Never Let Me Down Again" blossomed shortly after this; prior to that I'd picked "Behind The Wheel" and "Pleasure Little Treasure" as the songs of choice off that album.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Freelove
A Question of Lust
To Have and to Hold
Master and Servant
Leave in Silence
In Your Room
Never let me down
The Things You Said
Black Celebration
Stripped

and Shake the Disease and Everything Counts were great singles too.

russ t, Friday, 28 March 2003 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, i have Dan. But they don't come to mind immediately. Haven't heard _Black Celebration_ in its entirety in some time.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 28 March 2003 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, this is going to be difficult. However, here's the (current) 10:

10) Rush
9) Fly on the Windscreen (Final)
8) Stripped
7) My Joy
6) Sometimes
5) Never Let Me Down Again
4) Dangerous
3) Halo
2) Black Celebration
1) I Feel Loved

I'll prolly have changed my mind by the next hour, as I had to push "Lie to Me" and "Shake the Disease" into Honourable Mention positions.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Friday, 28 March 2003 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

nyeh, I don't like lists. But hearing Johnny Cash's "Personal Jesus" has been making me think I must listen to more by The Mode.

You mean that you haven't been? Tis time for further initiation....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Argh, "Freelove"! Hah, there's my #12 (and "Useless" is probably #13).

Matt, I'd give _Some Great Reward_ and _Black Celebration_ another listen if you have the opportunity.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

blasphemous rumours
stories of old
judas
the bottom line
and then
leave in silence

but not tonight

cecilia, Friday, 28 March 2003 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

("To Have and To Hold" is my #14. My #15 is "Sea Of Sin" and my #16 is "...And Then".)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt, I'd give _Some Great Reward_ and _Black Celebration_ another listen if you have the opportunity

Quite right! Those are the best of the early albums, IMHO. I actually lost the first copy of BC I'd borrowed from my local library, so I'd had to hunt til I found another.

As for SGR, I'd found it in my (not-so) local Tower clearance bin. Result!

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

("To Have and To Hold" is my #14. My #15 is "Sea Of Sin" and my #16 is "...And Then".)

And the voice in my head has an echo....Disturbing.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I heart Dan - "Lie to Me" is fantastic! The arrangement is just so perfect, so many glorious intertwining melodies. Here's my ten:

"Enjoy the Silence"
"Lie to Me"
"Love Thieves"
"Waiting for the Night"
"The Things You Said"
"Shake the Disease"
"In Your Room"
"Walking in My Shoes"
"Love In Itself"
"A Question of Time"

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

(#17 is "Stripped". #18 is "A Question Of Time". #19 is "The Things You Said". #20 is "Ice Machine".)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"Lie To Me" is great, and my #11. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I also love the fact that I know something like 97% of their output backwards and forwards but every now and then someone will mention a song I never even knew existed ("Fools" and "My Joy" on this thread are great examples of this).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I totally forgot "Only When I Lose Myself"! Stupid non-album tracks. I guess that replaces "A Question of Time".

Vinnie (vprabhu), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"Fools" was the B-side of "Love In Itself", an absolutely brilliant Alan Wilder creation.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

"My Joy" was an "Ultra" B-side. Narrowly missed being on the album since Fletch had been "outvoted". Apparently, DM chooses their songs in a democratic fashion (according to a NYC radio interview they did years ago.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought jonny cash's version was awful
his version of "hurt" is great though

Ben Silver (Ben Silver), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

(I can't really order them after the top 20, although due to the fact I'm listening to it right now "Leave In Silence" is currently #21.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

(And "New Life" is #22. I often forget how flat-out fantastic Depeche Mode really are.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I often forget how flat-out fantastic Depeche Mode really are.

Oh yes yes yes, Dan. Just reading these lists makes me all shivery -- them all being so OTM says a lot, doesn't it? Mine would be (chronologically):

Photographic
New Life
Master and Servant
Fly on the Windscreen
A Question of Lust (best use of ping-pong balls EVAH?)
Stripped
Shake the Disease
Never Let Me Down Again
Enjoy the Silence
Higher Love

In fact, I can easily make a list of ten full of goodness out of songs not mentioned in previous lists:

Photographic
Dreaming of Me
New Life
Pipeline (also best use of ping-pong balls EVAH?)
It Doesn't Matter Two
Strangelove
I Want You Now
Little 15
Higher Love
It's No Good

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 29 March 2003 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Good call on "It Doesn't Matter Two" -- the One Night in Paris performance is devestating.

Nobody's mentioned "Surrender" yet, I note. Well, I just have. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 March 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

My own list changed a bit last autumn, and now looks like this:

1. The Landscape Is Changing
2. Told You So

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Geir, I'm kind of surprised that "...And Then" isn't on your list.

Dan (So Gorgeous) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

It was #9 in the original list. Now #11 :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 19:16 (twenty years ago)

i really like the demo version of '...and then'

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Never heard that one. Maybe it'll turn up on the extended "Construction Time Again" (although that extended edition will be strong enough anyway, with "Fools" and "Work Hard", plus that amazing acoustic version of "Love In Itself", among the extra material)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 13 April 2006 10:27 (twenty years ago)

i found a pile of rather good demos and rough mixes via slsk and some , er interesting early tracks.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Thursday, 13 April 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)
