Nenah Cherry: CoD

Occasional great singles, occasional brilliant remix (w/ the Dreem Team), but I find all too often to be too "on message" and that the supposedly groundbreaking for time fusion of genre now seems awkward and dated. What say you?

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Manchild": classic. "Kisses On The Wind": OK. "Buffalo Stance" - hmmm, my heart is saying dud, my head is saying I need to listen to it again. I don't think it sounds dated, actually quite fresh - HOWEVER comeback post-motherhood stuff and latterday singles are an unspeakable wholemeal dud.

And to come over all Pinefoxy:

I actually love Homebrew - very nice in that whole proto-trip hop soul/hip hop/dance vein a la Soul II Soul and Blue Lines. Her work prior struck me as half-arsed when I sought it out originally, though I might have a different opinion now. Subsequent work has been inoffensive - I think the problem is that originally she tried coasting along on attitude alone, while recently she's not had enough.

Do you mean Rip Rig and Panic / Float Up CP!, Tim? I *love* Rip Rig and Panic, "Bob Hope Takes Risks" in particular.

Tim, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Like some others of my generation: 'Buffalo Stance' = one of the few 'dance records' I can tolerate (no, perhaps I mean - 'enjoy'). I'm surprised that Tom E instinctively dislikes it so much. Perhaps because it's Dance Music For People Who Don't Like Dance Music, and he's Someone Who Does Like Dance Music, so he thinks it's rubbish.

the pinefox, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I just remember the singing and words on it as being a bit poor. I probably need to relisten, though.

Tom, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I mean Raw Like Sushi (never having been in a position to hear Rip Rig & Panic - though I *do* enjoy her vocals on The The's Infected) - the whole "don't ya get fresh with me"/"this is the next generation" sorta stuff. Crucially though I made such critical judgements at the age of 14, so my opinion might differ greatly now.

Tim, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dud for two reasons: a)ordinary name with weird spelling, b)admitted to not knowing what a 'Buffalo Stance' is

tarden, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I agree with the point about being too "on message" all the time. There's a track on HOMEBREW that especially reeks of this. Dubbed "Trout" and featuring the riff from Steppenwolf's "The Pusher", the drum loop from Zep's "When the Levee Breaks," and Michael Stipe co- handling the lead vocals, all seems to be going rather well until the lyrics reveal themselves to be a ham-fisted appeal for sex education in schools. Cringe-worthy.

alex in nyc, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Classic. Didn't Homebrew pre-empt trip-hop?

chris, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Buffalo Stance" is one of my theme songs. CLASSIC.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh come on, Alex! "Parents and teachers get together get cool/children need to learn about sex in school/you think they don't do it? Don't get fooled!" is one of Michael Stipe's ALL TIME GREATEST RAPS! ....Er....

Tim, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah, the song's saying that ver kidz should learn about sex by watching their TEACHERS rear-end THEIR PARENTS!! It's SATANIC!! Get COOL!!

Neneh's got a wierd straight-down musical path.."Buffalo Stance" is genius.. ("what is he like..."), "Manchild" was cool but not as good, "Kisses in the wind" mmm OK and nothing from there on in ( except '7 seconds' ). A whole career in three singles. It reminds me of what a friend said of Oasis.. "each new single makes you yearn for the last one.." Incidentally the co-writer for "Buffalo Stance" was Neneh's husband Cameron McVey who also co-wrote that Sugababes single much discussed at ILM

Mat O, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I agree with the last post, except that singles 2&3 were bad also.

the pinefox, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Actually Cameron McVey aka Booga Bear was Neneh's main co-writer on all three albums, as well as being executive producer on Massive Attack's Blue Lines (his usual production partner Jonny Dollar co-produced the album). McVey also worked on the first All Saints album.

In fact that whole scene was pretty incestuous: on Protection Massive Attack handed production duties over to Nellee Hooper, formerly of Soul II Soul, who had just produced Bjork's Debut. Bjork then worked with Tricky, who had also of course been a part-time member of Massive Attack and later cut a track with Neneh, who had previously done a track with Geoff Barrow who went on to form Portishead. Even weirder: Tricky's production partner on most of Maxinquaye was Mark Stewart, former frontman for post-punk group The Pop Group, another ex-member of which was Gareth Sanger, who formed Rip Rig & Panic, which was Neneh's band in the eighties prior to going solo.

Reviving. New opinions on Neneh please! I'm not sure why - I may have seen sushi on sale and thought about buying it, but can't remember. Plus she's one sexy woman.

I love "Move With Me" despite it being co-written by Lenny Kravitz, and the dub version is really good too. So city at night and dramatic. Once I was sitting listening to it in my innocent way and my roommate's girlfriend flounced in and asked me why I was listening to "stripper music." Is it true? I don't care... if Lenny Kravitz didn't put me off it, he's much worse than strippers which aren't necessarily bad at all.

Listen to "Somedays" off Homebrew for proto-Portishead. But I guess I agree with the thread... many great and interesting songs, but never keeps it together for a whole album's worth.

And I like "Trout" too... it's so comical and of its time I love to listen to it.
