Has Vini Reilly lost it?

I've been a real fan of Durutti Column for quite a few years, but I feel that Vini's lost his way with his latest offering "Rebellion". The opening track "4 Sophia" reminds us of the Vini of old, but the rap on "overlord" doesn't really work, and Vick A. Wood's singing isn't a patch on Eley Rudge. I appreciated the variety of "Time Was Gigantic..." and the DC gig in Edinburgh as part of LaBradford's 2nd Festival of Drifing in '99 was one of the best I've been to ever, but still, "Rebellion" was something of a disappointment.

There's so much Durutti Column available that I've long since stopped listening. Apart from "Guitars and Other Machines" and "Vini Reilly" he hasn't produced a dud, but somehow there's only so much DC you NEED.

I'd rank LC/Another Setting/Lips that Would Kiss (Factory Benelux compilation)as essential, Obey The Time/Return Of/Say what you Mean (mini-LP) as nice to have, and Bread and Circuses/Without Mercy/any of the live sets as OK if you want more.

As I said, I haven't heard any of the later stuff (Sex and Death, Time was Gigantic....etc) so if it's substantially different to what has gone before I'd be interested to hear about it.

The newer stuff *is* substantially different, but then, I would say that "Obey the Time" is unlike the albums which preceded it, especially the track "Contra-indications". "Sex and Death" has a track which features Peter Hook on bass, the next album "Fidelity" is quite techno in places and was the first album to feature the voice of Eley Rudge, who also appears prominently on "Time was Gigantic". Vini's guitar sound is augmented well by female vocals, something we hadn't had the chance to hear much before, apart from the cover of "White Rabbit".

I dunno Dr. C - I agree with your call on LC, but don't you like The Return Of The Durutti Column???

Has anyone seen V.Reilly LIVE and enjoyed it?: I saw him (years ago) the Bloomsbury Theatre — really looking forward, too — and HATED IT.

As I said, Kodanshi, "Return Of..." is nice to have. Nothing wrong with it, just doesn't quite have *something* which LC/Another Setting have. In places it's a bit bland, is the best I can do to describe it.There's nothing as compelling as "Missing Boy", "Jacqueline" or "Messidor" on there.

Vina Reilly c.1988: best bum note in history of acoustic guitar?

Ouch. VinI Reilly. As heard on Vivi Hate.

What did you hate about the Bloomsbury gig, Mark S? The only disappointment about the Edinburgh gig I went to in the summer of '99 was that Eley Rudge wasn't there to provide live vocals (we only got sampled vocals when they did "Organ Donor"). But this is a minor quibble. "Missing Boy" was fantastic. Bruce Mitchell and Keir Stewart augmented Vini's guitar brilliantly.

Did he do any entirely instrumental albums? I like his guitar sound, but not his singing (not unusual!). I think I may have asked this before, but as long as this thread is up and about.

i at least know that the first album is entirely instrumental. all other LPs of his i've got have singing (but i'm missing a fair few). i adore his voice.
