Why does New Yawk produce such terrible singers?

Particularly of the Hell/Verlaine/James White school? Thurston Moore's asthma? All of these make even Lou Reed sound like a velvet-toned crooner, and 'Coney Island Baby' is obviously the product of 4 packs of cigarettes a day that go with a meth habit. Even the famous NY hardcore scene produces singers that sound like bawling 8-yr-olds compared to their DC counterparts. How could such a tough urban jungle produce so many whiny, snivelling vocalists with no 'presence' whatever?

I actually like all the bands/singers mentioned. I'm just speaking of 'normal standards' of singing and how they're absent from the Apple.

"Jim Carroll of the Jim Carroll Band": alex of nyc is aware, I'm glad to note, that when you throw a big old list at people, you should always include ONE TRANSPARENTLY RIDICULOUS ELEMENT, just to make sure they didn't fall asleep at the worthy obviousness of everything else in said list. Where is THALIA ZADEK, btw, peeps?

Hey! Jim Carroll may not be a great vocalist, but he certainly has "presence." Thalia Zadek? As in Live Skull/Come? Does she count, being that she moved to Boston? She puts me to sleep

David Johannsen has a good rock'n'roll voice.. or he did. Then came Buster Poindexter, a fun-time vanilla Tom Waits for the coffee generation. Now I hear he's grown his hair and gone bluesy, and apparently does it well. Incidentally, I thought Television had great vocals...
