Why does New Yawk produce such terrible singers?

I actually like all the bands/singers mentioned. I'm just speaking of 'normal standards' of singing and how they're absent from the Apple.

Hey! Jim Carroll may not be a great vocalist, but he certainly has "presence." Thalia Zadek? As in Live Skull/Come? Does she count, being that she moved to Boston? She puts me to sleep

David Johannsen has a good rock'n'roll voice.. or he did. Then came Buster Poindexter, a fun-time vanilla Tom Waits for the coffee generation. Now I hear he's grown his hair and gone bluesy, and apparently does it well. Incidentally, I thought Television had great vocals...
