I want to ship my 600+ LP collection cross country. How do I package, etc. so that they survive?

Zoinks. This used to be so easy: you'd just have to check at any record store that sold vinyl and ask 'em for the shipping boxes. I remember shipping bundles to and fro' in those boxes, and they were always as reliable as the courier was. Because the size ratio of CDs to cassettes to LPs was scarily compatible, you may still have luck finding boxes that can take vinyl. Nowadays it may require tracking down those old milk crates that perfectly accommodate ye olde ellpee, sealing the end up with cardboard and duct tape, and hoping for the best.

There's a shop here in NYC called EIGHTBALL RECORDS who manufacture their own flightcases for record storage (their main clientelle is DJ's). I recently had to move a lot of my vinyl into storage, so I bought a few of their sturdy, handsome, sizable cases for the job.

Check out their stuff at:

Sterling I moved from back and forth across the country twice, taking my approx. 1700 records with me. In both cases, I got boxes from the truck rental facility. They were called "book/record" boxes, and fit LPs perfectly. To my memory, they held way over 100 each, but I didn't pack them all the way because they got too heavy. You didn't specify if you intended to schlep them around yourself, or pack them for a courier to ship, but I'd imagine it would get pretty expensive if you were planning to go UPS or something... Good luck.

See what these people are saying? They have more records than you. Get to it.

Yeah, I went away for a weeks holiday a coupke of months ago and I packed the four thousand or so 12's I listen to on a regular basis and posted them to the destination in a 'Mail Miser'. ;-)
