oscar winning actress
singer
paramour to the young and beautiful
mother to the boring dyke and the excititng transvestite.
muse to Bob Mackie
Plus is there a better song then Gypsys,Tramps and Theives or that video where she is straddling the cannon and the entire ship of sailors is going into orgasmic yelling .
So what do you all think ?

anthony, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Lest we forget, she also dated Gregg Allman, Gene Simmons and --- I think -- Meat Loaf.

Her strident refusal to age gracefully (i.e. without surgical augmentation) sort've rains on the parade for me a bit.

Can't think of any records of hers that I like. Remind me.

the pinefox, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

didn't she do 'and the beat goes on' at one time?

gareth, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I wish someon ewould blow her up I guess. When I saw that ancient, sagging buttock creature on the Navy vessel... I was enraged. She is th e epitome of unsexy.

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Thanks to "Believe" all is forgiven. And I do think she did "The Beat Goes On" which was worthwhile as well.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, didn't she do "Half Breed"? I seem to recall that the song was used in the movie Dance Me Outside during a driving scene, but maybe I'm hallucinating.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Not to mention the great Beavis & Butthead appearence - songs kinda suck, but the image is a fucking hoot

Geoff, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

She did do Half Breed. And much hilarity ensued.

JM, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Then there's the time she harangued someone filming her as she came home on her mo'bike. "Can I not have a life?" she pleaded. Driving around on her Harley, wearing a German Stormtroopers helmet, she was confused as to why she should attarct any attention.

DavidM, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Classic for 'I Got You Babe' (esp. in 'Groundhog Day') and 'Believe', and also for singing backing vocals on lots of Crystals/Ronettes recs.

Dud for 'Walking in Memphis'.

Andrew L, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Wrote the classic text for reinventing yourself. Madonna and others have followed suit. (The only problem that she didn't give any back- up plans for when one's career spirals in a the wrong direction - Lori Davis Infomercials notwithstanding)

Jason, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I love Cher. Or rather, it's one of those things where I just like the *idea* of Cher. When I was a girl, Cher was pretty much the only dark-haired Barbie-like creature for miles. Dark, ethnic and totally glamorous. She was so cool and deadpan on the Sonny & Cher show. I love many of her records with Sonny, there's a sad quality to her voice.

I also love Cher because she defies such notions as "respectability", "good taste" and grace. It's because of people like Cher that I can stand to live in this country - fuck that Jackie O. bullshit. Cher is redneck exotic royalty. I sincerely believe she doesn't give a crap what anyone thinks.

Later records - not so much, but I think it's fabulous that a 50+ whatever woman could score a huge disco hit. And that song is growing on me anyway.

I guess the plastic surgery is kind of sad, it's not the Cher I knew and loved, but Cher as a myth is classic.

Kerry Keane, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Cher is a terrifying creature. CLASSIC.

Dan Perry, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Cher then - CHOICE. Cher now - doesn't even exist. Britney's the new Cher anyway (Metal Mike said , Village Voice ??-??-01).

Apparently she writes songs too. She even penned a song about Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain.

Inextricably linked with my near-fatal road accident some three years ago. "Believe" was number one for the entire length of my stay in hospital (seven weeks!) and just reminds me of dodgy World of Leather ward beds, no sleep, tasteless breakfasts at 5:30 am, TV on all night to distract from pain and inability to sleep, such that "Carrie" mutated into the "Learning Zone" into "News 24" into "GMTV." Could swear that I lay there and watched Penny Smith interviewing Anthony Braxton. If only.

Call me a sexist pig, but Cher is definitely classic. She's been looking a bit plastic over the last few years, but she's still a reminder of a time when celebrities and starlets were truly attractive, not carved and augmented rubber sex dolls. Kind of the anti-Britney.

Jim Jones, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Why does that make you a sexist pig again?

Ally, Monday, 24 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, I guess I didn't make it that clear. But what I meant is that she's only a classic due to her sexy appearance. Her acting and music are generally quite dreadful, though she was okay in "The Witches Of Eastwick."

"Unfortunately, what happens now is that kids are exposed to everything that's too old for them. You know, since the internet, since horrible PlayStation, you know, what's the name of it? Hijack car … that car hijack thing? I think maybe that is worse than seeing Miley Cyrus on a wrecking ball.

I forgot that Cher had her own variety show between the pre-divorce Sonny & Cher Show and the post-divorce Sonny & Cher Show. This would be 1975 into early '76. Some new nostalgia channel called GetTV showed the pilot episode from February 1975 tonight and it was pretty incredible. Costumes and set design completely out of control. Guest stars were Elton John, Bette Midler, and Flip Wilson. At one point Elton says, "y'know Cher, I think 50 years from now you're still gonna be going strong," at which point they flash-forward to a skit with all the guest stars hanging out in a nursing home 50 years hence. So here we are 43 years later and their seemingly absurd vision doesn't look too far off the mark. Flip's gone but one can imagine the other three yukking it up together as they do in the skit. Of course Elton overestimated how much hair he would have, but then Cher imagined herself with a decrepitude she shows no evidence of today.

Hope this show keeps getting run, it's a reminder of the how much production value went into some of the better 1970s variety shows.

you know how in the Sex & The City film where Liza Minelli sings "Single Ladies" and it's meant to be fun and camp and knowing... but it actually just feels contrived and obvious and pandering?

to be clear this is Cher's forthcoming ABBA covers album and not just a Mamma Mia soundtrack moment
