But hell, even the ones that are technically a bit rubbish are good because of the lyrics and song titles, especially the one where Chapple just screams 'Don't go fucking in the barn - because the BARN'S ON FIRE' over and over.
They've never done any gigs round here, which is annoying.
― Ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)
They play loads of gigs around here and are almost twice as good as they are on record.Especially when the bass player drinks too much whiskey.
Third album's being done by Albini too so it should be fantastic again. Yes!

'Cause they do. To me. I think about Surfer Rosa most every time I hear 'em. Not a handicap to my enjoyment 'tho. But I could be wrong.
― wl (wl), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)
How can a band with one singer who plays very simplistic (but v v good) guitar sound like a band with two guitarists with very different styles? Also the bas is a lot different i reckon and the pixies aren't half as frantic.
It will be interesting finding out.

The new album by Future of the Left, which is the singer + drummer from Mclusky plus another guy, has leaked and it is very very good. Like Mclusky but maybe a little poppier? It is called "Curses."

mclusky are fairly awesome, aren't they?
one thing, though: the similarities between the otherwise wonderful 'support systems' and mercury rev's 'hercules' are startling. i'm sure you could do a fine cover of the one mutating into the other and back again.
"seamus..." has one of the most perfect build-ups i can care to name. "collagen rock" is mega catchy. "day of deadringers" slays. "Slay!" slays. "1956 And All That" tortures, maims, and then slays. etc.
― Just got offed, Thursday, 6 December 2007 22:10 (seventeen years ago)
Absolutely one of my favorites. God, "the World Loves Us and Is Our Bitch," "London Whine Company," "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues." So glad I got to see them before they broke up.

― John Justen, Thursday, 6 December 2007 22:42 (seventeen years ago)
def. wasn't as "oh shit this sounds like mclusky hooray" as Future of the left.
― John Justen, Thursday, 6 December 2007 22:43 (seventeen years ago)
In the same way that Klaxons skewed the possibilities of pop, FOTL are attempting to do the same for rock.
lol NME
― Just got offed, Thursday, 6 December 2007 22:43 (seventeen years ago)
"London Whine Company,"
fuck yes! the ultimate end-of-the-world chord sequence and drumming combination.. And yes the FOTL album is, dare I say it, just as good as any Mclusky release.
― Simon H., Thursday, 6 December 2007 23:41 (seventeen years ago)
the more i listen to the FOTL album, the more i'm growing to love it. i was ever so slightly underwhelmed at first.
but mclusky ... ho wow, what a band. WOT A BAND.
― grimly fiendish, Thursday, 6 December 2007 23:47 (seventeen years ago)
Really? The FOTL just showed up in the mail about a week ago, and I'm still kinda undewhelmed.
― I eat cannibals, Friday, 7 December 2007 00:26 (seventeen years ago)
it isnt as good as more mclusky would (might) have been, but it's as good as we're likely to get. anacademyblahblahblah was the one that did it for me. When the EP/single/whatever came out however many months ago, that didn't leave much of an impression, though.
― John Justen, Friday, 7 December 2007 00:30 (seventeen years ago)
"Alan is a Cowboy Killer" remains unstoppable these many years later. I think it sounds like Spare Snare and not one bit like the Pixies.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 7 December 2007 02:43 (seventeen years ago)
ahhh spare snare. now there's a secret treasure
― electricsound, Friday, 7 December 2007 02:51 (seventeen years ago)
I live in an alternate universe known as Earth-SS in which Spare Snare is not secret. Actually, most of "Do Dallas" doesn't sound like Spare Snare at all, which is probably why, while I like it, I like it only 15% as much as I like "Alan is a Cowboy Killer." Seriously, all lovers of "Alan is a Cowboy Killer" should run and go listen to "As a Matter of Fact."
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 7 December 2007 03:54 (seventeen years ago)

I got that 3cd collection of McLusky a few years ago. Jusdging by this thread I need to find my copy. Think that was pretty comprehensive for what it was, but I'm not sure if there is a great deal of their catalogue not included or not.
I actually about half knew the earlier band The Cowboy Killers back in my hitching the UK following bands days. Not sure who was in both.
Yeah, definitely need to find that set. Very good band.Nice to see they got something into that NME 100lps you should hear thing around Xmas time. I used to use things like that as buying guides to some extent in my late teens/early 20s so hope that's still true for youth now.
― Stevolende, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 12:58 (fourteen years ago)
think you might have some crossed wires there dogg - Cowboy Killers were from nearish where McLusky come from (which I assume you know if you knew them?) but there's no member crossover, afaik they have no relationship at all

― Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Friday, 8 April 2022 17:53 (three years ago)
Having seen them again last week (6 since they've been back I think?) absolutely nobody should be dismissing this as a heritage act or reunion cash cow even if they are filling venues bigger than they (or FotL) got a couple of hundred in.
They're better these days than the last time I saw the Chapple lineup.
