B-b-but *you're* not *Cookie*!... [sob]

oh god. i'm guessing that non-canadians are spared some of the sloan exposure that we endured here. they were even a staple on the local mainstream/classic rock station circa "the good in everyone." one chord to another was the most abject sub-beatles schlock ever. what i heard of the early stuff seemed like nothing-special alt-pop, except for one song. through some perverse conspiracy of circumstances, this one song seemed to articulate the multitude of anxieties, confusions, hopes, and disillusionments of my first-day-of- grade-11 self. for a couple weeks at least. i don't think it was that good though.

Sloan strike me these days as the Canadian Weezer with less appeal. If that can be imagined.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sloan started out with a lot of potential, but they've been degenerating ever since. The first album they got their Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr. influences out of the way. The second album they took on the proverbial gods, the Beatles and the Stones. But the third, the Beatles won, and dominated the album. By the fourth album it was all April Wine, for god's sake, like there's been nothing new in music since the 70s. As much as I wanted to love Sloan when they first came out (I still think Peppermint and Smeared are both excellent in a cutting-yer-teeth kind of way), I think the only reason they sell records is because they're selling them to an audience too young to realize who they're aping. Kinda like Lenny Kravitz.

Come back, Matt Minglewood...all is forgiven

tarden, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh they're not so bad, you heartless bastards. there's a lot of worthwhile stuff on everything up to navy blues. the last one sucked, but give em a break.

fritz, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's going on? Stop crying, you fool.

Ally C, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic. Between the Bridges was badly sequenced, but it still had some gems of some pop songs on it. Much more to say on this tomorrow when I recover from Radiohead.

Oh, and double super classic, because they apparently "hate" Doompatrol. They've clearly got good taste.

masonic boom, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like a lot of the songs on Twice Removed - 'Bells On' (sort of reminds me of 'Chicago New York' by the Aislers Set), 'People of the Sky', 'Deeper Than Beauty', 'I Can Feel It'. On One Chord To Another, I like '400 Metres', 'G Turns To D', 'Take The Bench', and 'The Lines You Amend'. 'I Am The Cancer' is also a nice song. I have Navy Blues, but I've only listened to it a couple of times.

I don't think they're classic, assuming that dud is the default for everything in between, because they're too dull. I don't think they're typical of everything that is wrong with Canada. (What's wrong with Canada?)

One good thing about them is that everyone contributes, and it works!

youn, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So wait, Doompatrol is a known Canadian factor above and beyond this board? What is he, the Nardwuar that nobody likes?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, he was complaining on one thread or another (the Negative Scenesters thread? The I luv Alan thread?) that while he was being a KOOL KID hanging at RADIO4 with ALAN MCGEE, that those KNOWN NEGATIVE SCENESTER HEADS, Sloan, hate his fucking guts. Sensible boys.

I've always rather suspected that Sloan were the Canadian (pre-Song2) Blur. A perfectly good band who are often *loathed* in their own country, because they are MASSIVE and GURLS like them, yet completely unheardof in other countries (aside from 1 or 2 ancient one hit wonders- Girls and Boys for Blur, Underwhelmed for Sloan). Thing is, with Blur, even when they were unheard, they were indie cred for Anglophile Americans. There's no such thing as a Canadianophile, so Sloan don't get similar cache.

Which is a shame cause they are everything that could go right with indie-pop.

Oh, and they're well cute, too. Did I mention that? Cutest member of Sloan? I nominate Jay Ferguson.

masonic boom, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Canadianophile. heh heh heh. i just love the idea of a canadianophile. even less common than Belarusophiles

For the record, I loved Sloan until the blue album.

Library rock: classic or dud?

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think heros to a point...

A vital canadian rock and roll band....not imitating, just passionate playing...

Twice Removed is classic. The liner notes on the blue album...classic. The burt bacharach stylings on the blue album: classic. Underwhelmed: classic.

Bringing more excellent canadian rock and roll bands out of the wood (thrush hermit, joel plaskett experience, erics trip) fantastic.

setting up their own record label: classic.

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and of course the classic easy rider tribute video for the good in everyone....

their peak, really...

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Really like the first three albums, kind of a "meh" feeling about the rest.

However, respect is due.

Nicole, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Their second attempt at a video for Underwhemled spoke volumes, the banned donned Tshirts for Drive Like Jehu and Teenage Fanclub. Even after they cleaned up Underwhelmed from the muddy CKDU compulation it was first found on for Peppermint it was miles ahead of anything in Canada (Men Without Hats, Parachute Club, Glass Tiger and Gowan were all still around) outside of maybe Eric's Trip's 4 DIY cassettes (aka Sonic Youth worship). Second album took a sudden turn for the depressed. Leaving monthes of 500 Up and Underwhelmed on the radio to be filled with Coax Me. Miles ahead of all thats wrong with Canada, Our Lady Peace and I Mother Earth. The third album wasnt supposed to happen (the band played a rumoured breakup show) and is more a collection of singles then a proper album. Say what you will after that though cause I couldnt care too much. Between The Bridges contains too many injokes and KISS references though it ends fairly strong. Well the output was fairly good, their label was horrid, it broke the hearts of any band foolish enough to get involved. They can't hate Alan too much cause they all agreed to dj with him at the Pooptunes stopover in Toronto. I really shouldnt have posted, now Im going to need some Tim Horton's to calm my nerves and help me dissappear from here.

zac taylor, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oddly enough, I just got back from a Sloan show at a computer event...Comdex Canada is in full swing, and Ingram Micro pulled down Sloan for the headliner (with David Usher as the opening act, something that makes my tipsy heart sing...what a fall from glory!). I caught only the last few songs and the encore, and the band showed a lot of grace, even though playing a techie show. The odd thing is, all of the people in the audience were able to sing along with all of the material. Plus, it brought back positive memories of listening to "Underwhelmed" for the first time. Okay, so seeing a whole room of people pumping fist to "Money City Maniacs" isn't exactly a highlight of Canadian music, but I guess I underestimate the power Sloan has over a hometown crowd: the people know the songs, the band rocks pretty hard despite being a bunch of obvious geeks, and they have some pretty solid songs together. Classic? They certainly have some classic material from a Toronto perspective. It's an awful lot of fun, even if it doesn't necessarily carry to a world stage. If that makes any damn sense.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

zac taylor are you from hanson?

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry nope. Well Im at it, also not a dead president of the USA nor a former child star of Home Improvement and no, I dont any stocks in any famous Yougart stands. Oh, Chris Murphy's haircut is a symbol of what is wrong with Candian rock, the nonironic mullet. It makes Dean Wareham look styling.

zac taylor, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Too bad...

And hey, Canadian rock is not a wasteland it depends from where you are looking at it from...

Sianspheric Constantines joel plaskett experience...

God is in the details....not the mullet.

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think sloan lost the plot when they just started going it for the money, to be honest with you....

But before then, it was exciting to get albums..

What about murderrecords? Is it that bad? Don't really know much about it...

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Same thing with most indie labels, some band gets all the attention and all the funds (with Universal backing). Thrush Hermit is the only band that ever went somewhere (with neon light in tow) afterwards without blowing up instantly. It probably was different in the begining (always is) but Im thinking right around the time the final albums from Local Rabbits and Inbreds came out and you couldnt find them in any store. Like Song Records.

zac taylor, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Zac!!! What the heck are you doing here? Mention Sloan and Zac will appear, as if called into being. Back to your programming, my little Haligonian Man Chowder!

masonic boom, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, the SuperFriendz did okay for themselves. Probably not surprising considering the resemblance of the two Murphys' music. And hey, the first Eric's Trip was on Murder, too.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(I Thought Haligonian Man Chowder was Jem or you. It really disturbed alot of innocent little teenage girls in a hurry with that one). Um, first Eric's Trips were DIY cassettes and I thought a 7" or two on Sappy (the bassist's label) and NIH (or something to that effect). Were the Superfriendz big? I never really thought of them as such. Flashing Lights are doing alright I guess, getting taken up from a FACTOR funded lp to Spinart. (Kate, a picture of your favorite new signees to BMG distribution) http://www.chartattack.com/gallery/ (Chris still had that flower in his hair when he went to the Elevator show)

zac taylor, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the Joel Plaskett Emergency, not Experience. It was the Tim Robbins Experience. A wasted reference, no doubt. Also, nothing related to music should be ironic. Not even haircuts.

Punkin Ninny, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

singles band/not albums band. and now they have run out of singles. better if than did a baroque pop album and get it out of their system than becoming cheap trick.

doompatrol23@hotmail.com, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It makes Dean Wareham look styling.

Oh, but he does! Did anyone see his picture from Harvard in Rolling Stone a couple of months ago? (I didn't buy it, okay?)

youn, Saturday, 14 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoops. I meant the first Eric's Trip to get national distribution (that'd be the Peter EP). As for SuperFriendz, I always considered them way more popular than any of the other Murder bands, because our record store sold them at a rate of 3:1 or more to any of the other releases...combined. Of course, that wasn't counting our Sloan. Maybe it was just a regional phenom, though.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say smeared and twice removed are brilliant, the rest are up for debate. I saw their show in vancouver a couple months ago. you gotta like seeing a live show at a venue that looks like your junior high school gym, but with beer sales, and a band whos members can all sing, play guitar and drums. cheap tix too. all goooooood.

Z S, Sunday, 8 July 2007 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

The new album has several worthwhile cuts, namely "Another Way I Could Do It," "Ana Lucia," "Blackout" "Can't You Figure It Out," "Ill Placed Trust" and "Fading Into Obscurity." Overall, I like it more than anything that I've heard from them since Navy Blues in '98 (with "Iggy & Angus" being my all-time favorite Sloan track). And their Black Cat stop in DC this spring was fun.

Fitzcarraldo, Sunday, 8 July 2007 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

Classic, classic, classic!

2for25, Sunday, 8 July 2007 20:26 (seventeen years ago)

Sloan started off classic for me but became exceedingly dull. I imagine it's partly my own tastes moving on and partly because they make the same album over and over again. I am selling everything after _Twice Removed_.

They were fantastic live when I saw them around 99/00, and I typically don't get much from live rock shows.

Does Sloan have other things in the vein of / as good as "False Alarm"? I bought Between The Bridges when it came out, & it never stuck with me. Sometime mid-last-decade I dl'ed an mp3 of "False Alarm" & ever since have loved it like crazy. From reading this thread & others on Sloan, I gather that they play in a bunch of styles, though, & maybe that's why Between the Bridges never worked for me---because what I really want is more songs like "False Alarm". Any ideas?

Euler, Sunday, 16 January 2011 17:20 (fourteen years ago)

2006's Never Hear the End of It is a 30-track monster of an album -- there's probably something you'll like in there. "False Alarm" is an extremely focused song -- perhaps check out "Ill Placed Trust" (which IMO works far better in the context of the album but is still a great track) or "Last Time in Love". 2008's Parallel Play was kind of disappointing but "Believe in Me" rocks hard and "Down in the Basement" is a pretty entertaining take on "Subterranean Homesick Blues". You can skip 2009's Hit and Run EP. All IMO of course.

Action Pact is the only Sloan album i don't have, so i've never heard "False Alarm" before just now. nice song, don't really see how it's any different or better than dozens of other Sloan songs though.

Alex Da Dad (some dude), Sunday, 16 January 2011 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

Well Euler said he hadn't heard much. Skip said above, it's pretty focused for them - I've always been surprised it wasn't a single and its easily one of my faves from the 00s. If someone loved that song I'd probably recommend the Pretty Together album - the production is a lot more radio-friendly, less of that dry Beatles thing. "It's In Your Eyes" in particular has the romantic drone-strum quality of "False Alarm".

da croupier, Monday, 17 January 2011 04:22 (fourteen years ago)

imo Never Hear The End Of It is the ultimate "I haven't picked up a new album in these guys forever i wonder what they're up to now WOAH HOLY SHIT" album.

I didn't make it that far. I admire their attempt to make an ALBUM in 2014 (segues between songs, callbacks to earlier songs, etc) but the sequencing is weird with a bunch of ballads in a row then a few rockers in a row etc. but mostly I just didn't hear many hooks.

yeah this one is a little disappointing after the last 3 albums made for a really strong late career revival. their stuff usually grows on me, though. i'll give it time. the 17-minute song might actually be the best thing about it.

i recently did playlists of the best songs by each member of the group, think it's cool that they're giving each songwriter their own section of the album for the first time on this one:

Had this album been released as four EPs, Patrick Pentland's side would have been the best EP of the year.

MaudAddam (cryptosicko), Saturday, 10 January 2015 22:56 (ten years ago)

Haven't really gotten too into the newest one but my early impression is that Pentland's contributions are easily the worst of the four sides. In fact, I feel he's been consistently the worst songwriter in Sloan for at least ten years. .

Poliopolice, Sunday, 11 January 2015 00:28 (ten years ago)

I'd say for the most part Andrew is proabably the worst songwriter in Sloan, though I preferred his side on this album over Patrick's.

MarkoP, Sunday, 11 January 2015 01:07 (ten years ago)

Patrick has written the majority of their biggest songs, he can be kind of a one trick pony with the anthemic rockers but he's clearly not the weak link

Andrew is the least skilled of the 4 as a singer/songwriter but his big 17-minute track at the end of Commonwealth feels like the best part of the whole album and he's outshined the other guys on occasion before

alpine static, Wednesday, 26 October 2022 19:25 (two years ago)

Took until only a few weeks ago for 12 to finally click with me, lol whereas Steady, I’ve been enjoying more or less from the jump. Wasn’t super into Pat’s singles but they’re already late period classics for me now. Dream it All Over Again and Keep Your Name Alive, just fabulous Jay songs.

Still wrestling with Commonwealth, one of those admire/not love things. Could’ve worked better if they had changed up their individual sounds some, but the result is about what you’d expect, pretty samey.

Anyhow for 12, Spin Our Wheels, Day Will Be Mine, Essential Services, and all of Andrew’s songs work for me (likewise on Steady), Chris’s songs less so.
