One of my brother's horrid friends (see the Talk Radio thread on ILE) came round and this very argument came up. So, hairy metallers or snotty punks? Hmm?

Puh-leeze! Testament aren't even a good metal band! What's the point of this comparison?

alex in nyc, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Because I will find it amusing to see Testament get a kicking.

DG, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh, and I'm on the side of the Sex Pistols, of course.

DG, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Testament were not even part of the so called big 5 thrash bands in 1988: Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Metallica and um ..Nuclear Assualt?.

I remember them, Testament on the radio about 1988, nothing special - average competent trash metal.

Tell your young metal friend to check out Voivod: Dimension Hatross for an album of astonishing crushing dynamic heavy twisting futuristic metal music. Released in 1988 this album is a classic.

On a related note around 1988 Megadeth covered a Sex Pistols track and that dumb ass Mustaine got the lyrics wrong.

1) He's not *my* friend, I can't stand him.
2) He reckons the Megadeth cover is the better version.

DG, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Your friend's an idiot. And if he has a problem, have him talk to me about it. I know my thrash, I know my punk, and I know Testament is crap. Something like Opeth, now that's a different story, say.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Gah! HE'S NOT MY FRIEND! He's my brother's friend despite my brother not liking him.

DG, Friday, 6 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Testament are the most irrelevant band to ever grimace and strike a power chord. They will leave no lasting mark on the face of music history. They are utterly, entirely, irrefutably and indefensibly moot. Tell your brother's friend that he is summarily flushing any shred of intelligent credibility he might have by mounting such an argument.

And yes, the Megadeth cover of "Anarchy in the UK" is lamentably embarassing...almost as bad as Motley Crue's.

If YOU don't like him and your BROTHER doesn't like him, why is he so much your friend? Testament tower over the Pistols, clearly — even tho I don't believe I have ever heard anything by them.

Isn't the Megadeth version the one where Dave Mustaine misheard "council tenancies" as "cunt-like tendencies" = CLASSIC

My brother likes to hang around with him to feel superior, I believe.

DG, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

testament tower over the pistols? well i suppose if you like bad hair, sleevles tshirts, macho posturing and yawnsome guitar riffs they could be right up your street.

Nick greenfield, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I was probably joking. But they ARE better than the Clash...

mark s, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The Old Testament obviously rocks harder than the Pistols.
New Testament: sensitive wibbling saved only by the inclusion of
Revelation, which is still a bit prog for my taste.

Kerry Keane, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

on the whole it is pretty hard to be worse than the clash...apart from "give 'em enough rope", which is a pretty damn good album. I must say one thing punk has which 80's metal doesn't...dignity.

ten years pass...

This thread might contain the biggest RONG/RITE ratio of all time.

Testament's first three releases were pretty fantastic and the first two are considered classics in many circles (including mine)!

Yeah, all this misguided Testament hate is awful to read.

This must have been before the people who actually know metal arrived.

ten years pass...

A world of chaos
A world of fear
A world of anger and corruption
When all is lost
And millions starve
Is this humanity's destruction?
Life! A game that people play
Cryout! Will they see another day?
