And why?

I liked World of Water at the time - I thought it was really tight, kind of Mod-influenced but with a few spacey synths...although I haven't heard it in years.

As far as commercial early 80's new wave goes it's quite good ... upbeat and bouncy, sharp synth lines with a thin-voiced male singer. Plenty of songs about alienation and uncomfortably living in a world that doesn't quite fit. "Living By Numbers" is my personal favorite song. Their songs were a little too same-y to fully distinguish themselves but I still pull From A to B off the shelf every few months.

'From A to B' is wonderful and 'Anywhere' is quite good. I think they have wide appeal because they're a power pop band disguised as a synth-pop band.

I LOVE the Sanctuary LP (which is what I believe From A To B got released as here in the states). "Straight Lines," "They All Run After the Carving Knife," "This World of Water," "Science," so many great tracks. Definitely one of the underrated records from the '80s synth days.

I bought Warp in a used bin in Scotland four years ago, but have yet to listen to it.

Absolutely stonking tunes, and a rich overall sound. 'From A to B' is all I have heard, but it's more than enough to raise them to classic status. Very consistent power-pop filtered through the synth era, as said by Patrick South above.

the song 'Areas' from I.M.'s 1981 box set affected me quite a lot this weekend. are New Musik records easy to find? (I am in London)

They should be, I'd imagine--they're currently issued on Edsel, if I'm remembering correctly. Definitely worth checking out.

(found plonked unassumingly in the middle of miguel campbell's essential mix, perhaps appropriately enough heh)

I discovered that there was an EBM cover of 24 Hours From Culture today:

This World of Water is all time for me.

I can understand why New Musik didn't catch on... Tony Mansfield was far more comfortable with being a studio-head rather than aspiring to be a pop star, apparently he saw promotion as nothing more than a necessary evil and he's more than a bit of a reclusive figure these days, and the band themselves were hardly photogenic in a decade where your image really mattered, but... production-wise all three New Musik albums are absolutely fantastic. Mansfield really knew how to record a 12-string, and he got some great sounds of the drum machines of the period. You can very much tell that he was influenced by psychedelia, and he comes across as as much of a studio perfectionist as Trevor Horn. Obviously, he has a very different production style to Horn's, though. All three New Musik albums are prime production geek stuff.

Sanctuary sounds so familiar, as if it was on a soundtrack or something.

Holy fuck, how did I miss out on this thread?! I am literally obsessed with their album Warp, particularly the songs "Kingdom for Horses" and "Hunting". Those two would easily land on a list of my top 100 favorite songs of all time and I'd probably add "Hunting" to my funeral playlist.

Oh hell yeah. I've been absorbing a to b for a few days, but I selfishly hoped someone would get me excited about one or both of the others.
