26 Mixes For Cash vs Parts In The Post

wow! nothing half-decent for ages and then a glut of Warp-based artists release new(ish) albums within weeks of each other. New Aphex AND Plaid remix albums and the new Autechre album is out next week too. Shame I'm on the dole.

Anyway, this thread isn't really a VS thread, more just a composite to discuss these latest releases. I managed to scrape together enough for "26 Mixes For Cash" and I'm listening to it now. Aphex Twin is a very important artist for me, the Come To Daddy EP literally turning me on to electronic music and IDM. Throughout the late 90s I revered his music and bought almost everything he did. Then I got into Autechre and Plaid and Boards of Canada and CiM and Ulrich Schnauss and early Electro etc... Then after a long while, Druqks came out and I got excited to hear Aphex again. But the outcome was very cold. It seemed like RDJ was taking himself too seriously, listening to John Cage and solidifying a style he pioneered six or seven years ago. This is not what I wanted from the Twin though. Till then he'd been an experimenter. All his releases sounded very different from each other, yet Druqks seemed either filler or just redoing the quirky noises we've all heard before on Come to Daddy. The dream was broken, Aphex was, as I had very much feared, only human.
And now "26 Mixes" come out. A retrospective of Richard D James's remixes throughout his career. Nice idea considering a lot of these mixes are either very rare or don't resemble the originals whatsoever, making it more than yer average remix album.
Sadly though, this too is leaving me cold. Maybe I'm just fed up with Aphex but it seems that despite his much touted randomness, there are only a handful of Aphex tunes:
1. Polygon Window/Classics-era 4/4 beats, jittery electronic chatters and dreamy pads.
2. Ambient - The pure drifting soundscapes of Selected Ambient Works II
3. Drill'n'Bass - like the RDJ Album, Come To Daddy, Windowlicker and Druqks. This is probably the most tedious style. Interesting to start with but everyone's ripped this shit off and Druqks was RDJ ripping himself off. Not too bad if saved by a decent melody like on 4, Girl/Boy Song etc.
4. Well, every so often he makes a blinder. Most of these are found on b-sides and I Care Because You Do. Alberto Balsalm, Flim etc.

Ok, that was needlessly harsh, I admit, but this is the problem with "26 Mixes", I've heard very few of these tracks, but I may as well have.

Looking forward to one day getting the Plaid remixes. This should be more coherent seeing as Plaid could be counted as genre-opposite to Aphex in that they are perfectionists, unafraid to focus their attentions on every melody and timbre until they've made something achingly beautiful rather than the AFX approach of, wack it through the madloops generator, job done mate, NEXT! I've already heard the mix of "All Is Full of Love" by Bjork and it shines in comparison to anything off of "26 Mixes" simply because one realises that they're actually trying.

So yeh, what did everyone think of these? And is the new Autechre any gud?

I've sorta wanted to get Drukgs for a while but never get around to it. Too many other wants.

Autechre's newest is sorta like their last couple, it's really, really good yet isn't changing my life. If I'd never heard it I wouldn't be missing much.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Aphex Twin ripped his drill'n'bass kung fu off from Squarepusher.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

The new Autechre is fantastic (they've reinvented themselves again) as is Parts in the Post. The latter flows exceptionally well for a collection of remixes.

(So what Dan)

afx's "hangable auto bulb" = 1995
plug's "plug 1" = 1995
spusher's "conumber" = 1995

hyper-on experience's "lord of the null lines" = 1993

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nah, the true predecessor is Foul Play's "Open Your Mind" (1992).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

actually, I heard it was Luke Vibert what done it.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

The first drill 'n' base was Ministry - "Just like you" back in.... 1986.

fletrejet, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Who fucking cares?! Do you people like music or genres and historicity?

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

or something off of troutmask...!?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

anon. gamelan orchestra - "golden rain" (1967)

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

i really like that f# on track four. is that what you meant?

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

agreed disco stu. all that matters is that aphex is responsible for a glut of bedroom artists making drum tracks that go "TSSSCHHHHFFFtikkatikkabombomRHHEEEEEEE Thickaboomtchickaboomuh-uh-uh-uhYEAH!"

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 16:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

My initial point was that Squarepusher (and, since he was brought up, Plug) were just as responsible for that movement as Aphex Twin, if not more so, and I disagreed with the idea of holding him up as an innovator/progenitor of that scene. Then Stu got all bent out of shape and it became patently clear that annoying him would be more entertaining than following up my point.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nothing bent out of shape here...internet forums are funny like that.

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

btw if that was yr initial point why didn't you make it initially?

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

dan, true but more kids are/were arguably into aphex than plug or the pusher.

anyway, it's off topic so fudge that. What about "26 Mixes"?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

i quite like it, actually. the first disc more than the second.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

I did, Stu.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

ridiculously uenven as (almost) always--the "Heroes" rmx is totally unlistenable, some of the ambient is a washout, could've been cut in half to much better effect, I'm sure some great stuff is missing though I couldnt ID what; it kicks Druqkz's ass but what doesn't?

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

stu, i've always found that half the point of IDM is to come up with new and exciting ideas. this may be why the "who created drill'n'bass" discussion occured. in this genre, very often the moment the idea has been realised, it becomes old hat or a ripoff. strange maybe, but it keeps things interesting and you know that once an artist has delivered his third album of drill breaks, you know they've lost their gas. Only the best manage to stick to one idea and keep it fresh (see: boards of canada).

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

"keep it fresh" = "make an album every five years"

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

didn't work for aphex though did it?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Did everyone order theirs from Warpmart to get the chocolate coins that come with it?)

I think the point of all art is to come up with new and exciting ideas. It's all that is left really...

disco stu (disco stu), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

many geniuses (sic) have based entire careers on doing the opposite though.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mozart, for example.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Mozart probably isn't the best example, sorry.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

the best thing about the aphex comp is its name. not his most engaging stuff, not even pretending, can't believe how LONG some of these tracks are, just set up your stack of loops and let 'em run, sir.

Complete critical disconnect once again, the snide, the guarded 'good' reviews are just as offensive as the bad reviews for the last one. After years of sneering at everyone from over his shoulder, it makes sense that rock critics came out swinging the second he put out something less than revolutionary, but if you're going to get angry just because you can suddenly recognize a few drum samples, you should ask yourself if you ever really loved this kind of music...

jl, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm going to download it just because of the name.

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 17:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

so you're saying rock critics came out swinging in 1994, then?

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

i love drukqs!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

I loved Drukqs, too. Listen to it again, folks.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

yep drukqs is a good album.

ok matos you've made it clear you're not a rdj fan.

jl, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

not like anyone has to be or anything. point taken if you were merely calling out my use of the word 'revolutionary' as hyperbole.

jl, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've only listened to the first CD so far, but I like it very much indeed. It serves to remind me that for all the talk of his sonic innovation and his pisstakery and his drill and bass mentalism, what really sets RDJ apart from his peers is his sense of MELODY, and the first CD at least seems confirm that. Yes, I know they're nominally remixes, but almost all of these are Aphex compositions in their own right really.

I haven't heard Parts In The Post yet, although I'm a big Plaid fan, I've never especially rated the Plaid mixes I've heard.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 09:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't understand that album title. I mean, he has called it 26 mixes for Cash, and yet there isn't one single Johnny Cash track on the album... :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 09:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

LOL! Even THAT'S not very original cos it sounds like he nicked it (the title) off the KLF. ;-)

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 09:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

new autechre = okay, some nice old-skool rave sounds thrown in here & there.
26 mixes = a treasure (but maybe i'm just the last RDJ fan in town)
plaid = have heard from trusted sources that it's great. in general i like plaid, but after 3 tracks my mind usually starts to wander.
