EM@IL.COM is my favorite new poster.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

ALMOST AS MUCH AS ALL-CAPITALS WRITING

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Erm... I actually really like them. Finally bought the album after concluding they weren't up to much (about a year ago). Since then, 'Whatever happened to my rock and roll' has been stuck in my head and, on a whim, I picked up the CD in a Woolies bargain bin. Tom my shock, I found it very good.

Calum, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

ugh. they're terrible. they sound polished to me.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

one of the worst bands in history.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I SAY THEY SUCK TEN TIMES MORE THAN THE HIVES. AND THAT IS A LOT OF SUCKAGE.

, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

It seems to me like it wouldn't be that hard to be a decent Jesus and Mary Chain knock-off band, but these guys truly suck at it. Terrible.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I'm not even that big a J&MC fan but I'd have to buy everything they've ever done before blinking at these guys. Though a band this dumb usually tends to fall ass-backwards into one classic song.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

when I saw them play They did a kinda team headnod confidence number before running up on stage. It also seems to take a lot of concentration to execute the BRMC song catalog. which is surprising to say the least

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

ugh. they're terrible. they sound polished to me.

This post made me larf.

As for BRMC, "Love Burns" is a great tune, but overall they're very eh. I saw them play at the Parkside Lounge in NYC at some sort of secret gig (I was there to see Calla, but BRMC played an unannounced set afterwards), and it was hilarious. The room at PL is the size of an average bedroom, the stage the size of a king-size bed. Yet BRMC insisted on setting up their fucking light show and Marshall stacks, to the point where the bassist and guitarist were having to squirm and balance to stay on the stage. I left after four songs.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Aye! Aye! Maximum suckage. The topper is they take themselves so damn seriously.

a, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Deeply, truly, madly...terrible as all fuck.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

LB and WHTMRnR are both quality tunes. I listened to Love Burns over and over for a little while when I got the album.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

That name! I mean...what were they thinking?!

Venga, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

in other news, the sky is STILL blue!!

geeta, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

an even blander Jesus and Mary Chain.
NME. I never buy it anymore.Fucking Smash Hits.

panico (panico), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

all right. i'll even agree with this one. as long as you lay off the hives.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

The only thing "by" them I've heard is that one mashup with "Get The Party Started" and I like that fine.

Burr (Burr), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I like singles by both bands. Pooo.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Oops: That was Drive-by Truckers. Never mind.

Burr (Burr), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

"Whatever Happened to My Rock 'n' Roll?"--that title makes me want to barf.

And lay off Smash Hits!

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 22:18 (twenty-three years ago)

They just needed somemore time being insane with the BJM so they could get indie cred and become cool with makeoutklubkids.

I still like them better then the STR*KES, though that doesn't say much.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

They're the best interviewees of the Nu Rock bunch.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I only heard that song "Awake", and I was hoping the whole album would be full of similar roaring massive shoegaze epics like it. i was sorely disappointed.

xnelio, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i like the ones that start quiet and woozy sounding the best

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh man, i love these threads :)
it actualy didn't surprise me et al when i saw them being considerd as the graetest rock band, they attract hype like shit for flies. what an anoying voice, God i miss Jim Reid. wonder what Jim thinks of all of this nonsens heh.

rex jr., Wednesday, 2 April 2003 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Freeheat aren't exactly setting the world on fire right now

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 05:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I ment more in the sense of J&MC.

rex jr., Wednesday, 2 April 2003 05:04 (twenty-three years ago)

when i hear BRMC its all just a crappy J&MC ripoff to my ears.

rex jr., Wednesday, 2 April 2003 05:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Jim Reid is one of my heroes, but yeah, Freeheat are a bit sucky. Did anyone hear the Sister Vanilla track on that Geographic comp? Now that's a catchy tune (Linda Reid, BTW).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 05:18 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, i thought that was one of the standout tracks on that comp.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

so it seems the answer is yes.
Hated the fucking video as well.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 06:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I've said it before, I'll say it again:

THE STEREOPHONICS OF DRONEROCK!!!

kate, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 06:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The album is a bit flat but that 'Red Eyes and Tears' is fuckin ace.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 07:13 (twenty-three years ago)

pretty good album i think...the rock n roll one and love burns are v good.
Nice sound...bit boring drums though.

Mr Monket (apn99), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

My answer is not "what"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Listen to the Warlocks instead. They have 2 drummers and three guitarists so right there that makes them 2X3=6xbetter than most Jesus/Spaceman re-runs.

Scott Seward, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Eugh I saw the Warlocks live a year ago. They seemed to be less of a band than a shitload of hipster friends who with zero talent who wanted to start a band but didn't want to leave any of their friends out.
Plus they have the obligatory outrageously hot female keyboard player who does absolutely nothing but stand there, looking hot and tapping the keys of an unplugged farfisa.
And one of their guitarists looks like Bill Murray.

xnelio, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Bleh. I saw the Warlocks when they opened up for Spectrum awhile back and found them incredibly tedious - with all those folks on stage there's absolutely no dynamics to them at all except sludge on/sludge off.

I don't mind BRMC that much... I completely missed the hype machine that surrounded them, so I didn't have any preconceptions going in. They're basically the ZZ Top of the current psych-droners - they're together as a band, hit the right notes, and occasionally write an interesting melody, but aren't interesting enough to be worthy of the hype or sucky enough to be worthy of all the hate.

But then again, I'm not much of a JAMC fan either.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

BRMC TO SUPPORT JESUS AND MARY CHAIN
Sep 18, 2007 United States
As a group who were a major influence on BRMC, we are very pleased to announce the band will be appearing as very special guests to the Jesus and Mary Chain in Los Angeles.

Both bands will be playing the Wiltern on October 23. Tickets for this historic show are selling very fast!

The Jesus and Mary Chain released a series of singles and albums between 1984 and their breakup in 1999 however the band reunited earlier this year.

stephen, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

what a bad idea

jergïns, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

well rubbish

max r, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

Not a big fan of JAMC, but I guess they did stand out against the 80s mainstream of Yamaha DX pop. (Some of which I love, btw) but noisy, sullen bands that sound like Stooges/Velvets/whatever now? Nothing could be more bland and mainstream.
