evanescence and AFI C/D?

I haven't heard this group yet but they're doing really well. I want some ILxors to tell me what they think of 'em. The other real surprise for me chartwise is how big AFI is right now. I heard the album (my first review for Blender, if I may toot my own horn mildly) and while I think they're ok musically, I never would have thought it was Top 10 material (the lead singer has a REAL generic voice). What's with all this gothy stuff rockin' the charts?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

before these two bands took the top ten the only rock artists hovering around the top 20 were Good Charlotte, Audioslave and Coldplay. My my.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

As in top ten album sales? Who the hell are they anyway?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

evanescence=the aroma of Dando

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Evanescene is still in it and after its first week AFI dropped to the top 20 album sales wise. Evanescene is also number one on the modern rock charts for their single. Somewhere I heard they were like Linkin Park meets Tori Amos. CRAZY.

Something like that, Evanescence is. Not bad, but it'd be much better w/out all the fucking nu-metal power-chording chunka-chunk bullshit presumably thrown in to make everything sound TOUGH and MANLY (for the folks whose threshold for emotional vulnerability is pushed by the sentiments expressed in "Nookie"). And the two ballads (piano, strings, voice, not much else) sound just like Sarah McLachlan - shockingly so. If you can let some high-school lyrical doodling slide, you'll like it.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

what could be more emotional vulnerable then getting your tender heart put in a blender though still you surrender like a chump hey like a chump hey like a chump hey like a chump hey?

damn, I need to hear Nookie again. Seeing as how I'm not averse to some nu-metal chunka-chunk as long as the beat ain't too dead, I'm hopeful about this lady and her pals.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Evanascence's hit basically sounds like Linkin Park if Chester = chick. not bad.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked AFI in middle school. Destroy their albums until Black Sails On The Sunset because before that they really sucked. I haven't heard anything after The Art of Drowning. Those two are pretty good Misfits-esque punk stuff. Some generic moments, but a few songs here and there I remember really loving.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought the Art Of Drowning to compare it to Sing The Sorrow. It basically sounds the same minus everything Misfits-like. Basically now they're At-The-Drive-In with vague anguish instead of vague political anger and less cool hair.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The "it" in the second sentence is the new album, Sing The Sorrow.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Somewhere I heard they were like Linkin Park meets Tori Amos. CRAZY.

Oh okay, I have heard this band -- had a song on a soundtrack, right?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, the Daredevil soundtrack. I think that's the song that's number one on modern rock charts right now. One the first no. 1s without Dave Grohl on it in ages!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

That's it, yes. I remember thinking they were pleasant enough -- I'd have to listen to them again, but they and Tatu seemed like they could share a bill or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Both of them....utter, UTTER CRAP!!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

for real. both bands are worthless pieces of dung on my shoe. especially the linkin park with a chick band. they are painful.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Evavnescence sounds like a long-awaited nu-metal/power metal crossover extraganza. These guys have a concept album in 'em yet.

original bgm, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
I got this and the TATU album today. Both good. I'm all about the overproduced chick quasi-rock.

adam (adam), Friday, 18 April 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Evanescence: is it just me or does their single sound like a nu-metal version of "Torn"?

AFI: I'm always going to have a soft spot for them because the drummer and first guitarist were my best friends in elementary and middle school. I haven't talked to them in years but it makes me happy to see that they've gotten so popular. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that I like their music; I was never as big of a punk rock fan as they were, and I hoped that their sound would eventually evolve beyond the monotonous four-on-the-floor power-chord East Bay hardcore sound. Sadly, it would seem that any goth and metal influences they've picked up are mostly superficial (Davey Havok = Morgan Lander from Kittie), and signing to Dreamworks did little to their sound except shine it up a little.

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 18 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I was really excited about the idea of a female-fronted band finally cracking the rock charts. Then I heard it.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 18 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

still haven't heard evanescence (I'm still hopeful despite all the evidence). but I just saw the AFI video. damn, they didn't even pick one of three all-the-way decent numbers ON the album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 18 April 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Evanescence is a Gathering/Theater of Tragedy/Lacuna Coil clone with a guy rapping instead of delivering gruff death metalish vocals. Not much to say really, other than its been done better by others long before.

Alan Conceicao, Friday, 18 April 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the "rapping guy" on the single wasn't in the band, just a "guest vocalist" from another band...

Nick Mirov (nick), Friday, 18 April 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

He is.

It's weird, I don't like Tori Amos OR Linkin Park, but that song = classic classic classic.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 19 April 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Evanescence song gets played all the time on the local Christian rock station--------hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!

Man alive, I think I'd be thee biggest numetalover if they were all fronted w/chix!* Even the stupid rapping dudde doesn't spoil it.
*note:I have not heard Kittie

Fivvy (Fivvy), Saturday, 19 April 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Christian rock is awesome as long as its good. Check Living Sacrifice. Also Amy Grant.

adam (adam), Sunday, 20 April 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Shadows Fall a christian band? The one song of theirs I heard sounded just like classic Entombed.

Kris (aqueduct), Sunday, 20 April 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, I heard this evanescence song on the TV last night, the one with the goth girl singing. I quite liked it, though the bits where the Linking Park style band were singing weren't as good.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 20 April 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

she is their singer! opps, I thought they were British too.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 20 April 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah both bands are run of the mill modern rock shit.
