other good stuff: the advent, (eg two rock), surgeon (eg first), some jeff mills.

Elliot (Elliot), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

live at the liquid room by jeff mills is possibly the best introduction to techno

robin (robin), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup, I second that.

DJ Rolando-Knights of the Jaguar

weird: "Face Lifter" - Chelsea Grin

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Does all techno aspire to "classic" status though maybe? It's hard to thing of "goofs" of which there are plenty in house, for instance.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

tracer, what about like the christian vogel type stuff and a lot of the neo-california producers?

anyway, my fave techno record of the last few years is probably scion's arrange and process: basic channel

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

F.U.S.E owns. See also Elevator 101, Exposure, 80 AUM, Human Resource, Burger Industries, 3 Phase, and Maurizio.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone heard this Brian Zentz dude yet

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

jess, i don't know? i don't remember Christian Vogel sounding particularly "weird" but maybe I havent' heard enough

(yeah Dan, F.U.S.E. vs LFO "Loop" is about as classic as it gets)

Brian Zentzer Orchestra rules man, swing-techno's the thing right now, it's all about the dancefloor

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Brian Zentz is pretty good - he's been around a while, if you like him, also check for Christian Smith...

Sorry to get all Detroit on your derrieres, but you did ask for classics and these all are...

Classic -
Rythim Is Rythim - Strings Of Life - Transmat
Clear - Cybotron - Metroplex
Reese and Santonio - Rock To The Beat - KMS

Mindbenders
Red Planet 2 - Stardancer

Moody Boyz - Product of the Environment

I pulled this album out the other day for the first time in years. It is so great. Stands up really well. Possibly the only good "future primitive" (hate that term but you know what I mean) techno ever.

Ben Williams, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

[Tony] Thorpe's Language label kept the Moody Boyz torch burning, at least for its first few years. Tao, Circadian Rhythms (Charles Bullen) and the first Miscellaneous comp are stellar - very true to the Boyz' one-world ethnotechno creed - and the early run of 12"s and LPs by Bio Muse, Endemic Void, and Buckfunk 3000 have held up quite well. they remain so challenging and vital, i'm willing to overlook such miscues as Phosphorus (yech) and Elixir (zzzz).

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Ben I like that Moody Boyz album too, one of the best first-wave prog-house/techno thingies every, surely?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 3 April 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll fourth the MoodyBoyz disc (i have the recycled for the environment double). I'm not sure about this mindbending bit though.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 3 April 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Forgot how phenomenal « Places «  is. Just sat back the last hour and played through the whole thing loud on headphones. Absolute classic.

Terrence Dixon should def be mentioned if you're looking for some of the stranger OG Detroit stuff--his ahead-of-the-beat/stumbling programming feel was a big influence on Actress in terms of this past decade's generation of techno producers:
