Search And Destroy: Kool Keith

No idea why I'm posting this really since I'm off on holiday today so I won't even read the meager handful of replies until they've vanished off the radar, but I'm listening to the (eh) Spankmaster CD and was wondering what of his stuff is good. I remember not being too impressed by Dr Octagon, so maybe I should just leave him as a blindspot, but I adore the first Ultramagnetic MCs album. Over to you.

Tom, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Picked up the DR.OCTAGON disc based on the hype surrounding it, the Pushead cover art, and the strength of Kool Keith's contribution to the Prodigy's FAT OF THE LAND album ("Diesel Power"). Found it to be disjointed and bizarre, but not in a remotely interesting way.

alex in nyc, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

1st UMC album of course. That album Ecologyst (always mess up the title) is as good as the bloody hype...these things happen ;) Bloody great Sci-fi hip-hop with, you know, funny jokes. Don't forget those bonus-tracks esp the one about Shark Man. Then on to "Lost in Space/Black Elvis", word on the street says the production is weak, word ons street needs to buy new ears with bass- enabler. Excellent sparse party tracks with funny S.F. tales & the usual disses (K.K. as arsehole executive: "I want to fax yourself to China/Do it now!".

Said it before: he's the Rabelais of hip-hop. Search your heart, you know it to be true ;)

I recon blue flowers is one of the best hip hop tunes made. Dr Octagon is a really enjoyable album, I didn't enjoy dr doom that much and haven't listened to anything since which is possibly a mistake.

Ed, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Search: Ultramagnetics, Dr Dooom, his showing on A Prince Among Thieves.

Destroy: everything post-Dooom, most of Dr Octagon, his bizarrely inflated ego, the incoherent interviews he gives, his expensive and dull live show, and Dan the Automator. What's the big deal? (Another thread?)

adam, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I pretty much agree w/consensus: Dr. Octagon is very accomplished but you either like it or you don't. Dooooom kind of sucks. I like the Black Elvis album. A lot. Search: Kool Keith's attitude.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Search: "Critical Beatdown" and "Black Elvis / Lost In Space".

Destroy: some of the Dr Octagon stuff, especially the instrumental tracks, as I recall. Also I'm not too keen on what I've heard of late-period Ultramagnetic MCs.

Kool Kieth is beutiful. Black Elvis is brillant. Doctor Octogon is Afrofuturism and i always support that. I hate hiphop but KK is one of the few exceptions i make.

anthony, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Search: What's already been mentioned, Dr. Octagon, Dr. Dooom, Black Elvis.. etc.

-Sex Style- is a fantastic record as well. Some of his very best tunes are on that album. His tracks on Dan the Automator's -A Much Better Tomorrow- are really great; definitely some of his better flows, not to mention some of his coolest characters make their appearances on that one.

Analog Brothers -Pimp To Eat- is good, too, though Ice T and some of the other MCs steal the show a bit, on a few tracks.

Destroy: Hmm. A lot of tracks off of Matthew and Spankmaster are pretty bad, most of the "I hate record labels/everyone is copying me" tracks are pretty weak, not to mention redundant. I'm not going to dismiss those entire albums, though... they do have some redeeming value.

My verdict is still out on -Masters of Illusion-; I've yet to hear all of it.

Keith seems to shine best under the wing of more experienced (I mean, better) producers, although Keith's production style has its own charm from time to time.

Kool Kieth is accomplished, versitile and unique, like or hate him. I think that he, as well as many others (such as Del) are very frustrated over these commercial rappers getting all the credit. I notice that he seems to be reveared among more of a punk crowd than mainstream hip hop. He doesn't conform and wouldn't have it any other way.

Kool Kieth aka Dr dooom aka Dr octagonacologyst aka Sir Menelik aka Skalamanga Shalar aka Spankmaster aka Rythem X aka MC Vulchar... His shit takes hiphop to another level. I,ve been listening to koolkieth for about 4 years and since that time My taste has changed dramatically. No more gangster rap, stricly trip hop.If kieth isnt your taste try Jacky Jasper aka Motion man.. Who said white ladz cant rap.... Look out for. #17 Spankmaster #4 Masters of Illusion #Secret song Masters of illusions.. This Cd is where you will here Kieth and Motion at their best..

Dirty Sanches aka Tera-act-ill......

Dirty Sanches (Man of the hour), Friday, 5 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Kool Keith is not Sir Menelik, or Scaramanga Shalah (I think we've both spelled this wrong, who cares)- Sir Menelik is a completely different rapper. He was a co-creater of the Dr. Octagon project, and is Keith's right-hand man though. Scaramanga is Sir Menelik's character. Cyclops 4000 is Menelik, also.

Bobby D. Gray, Saturday, 6 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sex Styles is his best, it's damn good.

The Octagon Album is terrifyingly beautiful. Its on a totally different level to any other hip hop album I've heard. Check out those rhythms he uses in his raps.

James Annesley, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Hmmm, lets see. The Dr. Octagon album is one of the most creative I have heard in a long time. Tom, you are missing some intellectual material. Some tone and bass to confuse your brain, and sound waves unlike many. Just wait, it will be called a classic in a few more years. B.

Buster Trinofro, Monday, 15 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dr. Octagon is much hated-on, and undeservingly. Similar to ATLiens and most of Organized Konfusion's shit, The Octagon chapter of the Kool Keith on-going MP complex is mos def a creative masterpiece of modern hip hop. Most of the tracks are heavily symbolic and nearly losing meaning altogether. The listener would probably appreciate Dr.O if he were a genuine fan of the writing of Joyce and Poe. Every song must be taken as an individual piece, NOT A FACTION Of THE ENTIRE LP. The problem with Octagon is that intially, Kool Keith is a phuckin' head case; and, when viewed more in depth, presents too many different themes that have nothing to do with one another. My personal favorites include "Girl Let Me Touch U" (the "love jam"), "I'm Destructive", and "Blue Flowers-revisted" (the beat is a little more lyric-emphatic than the original). This IS a four-and-a- half to five mic LP. Futhermore, I also agree that most of his new shit is on the mad-rapper-fuck-the-industry tip. However, as an emcee I have to "big-up" Kool Keith as a lyracist. This kid can spit....(check out "1977"). On the real, I would recommend at least a listen to Octagon, Matthew(3 mics from Re), and Spankmaster to any TRUE hip hop head. Perhaps, you may need to get tutorials from some old OK or Company Flow before touch the good Dr. In closing, peace to Kool Keith, I'll see you on Halloween kid. BIG UP TO ALL HIP HOP.

Peace out, ReCaaLL p.s. check for "The Omega Project" LP from Da B.O.S.!!!!!!!!!!

If Keith's solos get monotonous for you, then try hearing some stuff he's collaborated on. Masters of Illusion for example, or any of the stuff he does with female emcees and vocalists. I don't think that Motion Man is white or Jackie Jasper either, for whoever said that.

I think Kool Keith, Dr. Octagon, Black Elvis, or Dr. Doom whatever you wanna call him is a genius behind the mic. The things he says in his songs may sound weird and twisted when you first hear them but if you really think about the rhyme behind the reason there is none. It's just pure imagination, which is fucking cool. I think Kool Keith's shit is good because of it's unique-ness, because it's one of a kind. That's my opinion though.

I think they'd had to pay so much (Keith associates apparently kept saying "uh... Keith needs another grand to get a ...new mic lead, yeah, that's it. can you send it by tomorrow?" when they tried to get tapes back) by that point it would have felt like too much of a waste not to use what they did get.

They never really tried too hard to cash in on either the Keith or Kylie collabs on the album, though.

Tall people be warned: he whips baggies full of chicken wings and Capri Suns out into the audience during the "chicken break", and tallies like myself have been known to get knocked in the face.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:10 (eighteen years ago) link

i've seen keith 3 times. he's great to see 1 time, if you are a big fan of his. this is his MO on stage:

1. Show up late - most artists do this very well
2. Rap over his own records, usually just a couple verses and choruses from each track, rarely, if ever the whole song
3. Blue Flowers is the one Dr. Oct song he'll play.
4. He will be funny and insult the crowd
5. He will throw eaten chicken wings and sometimes Porno mags into the crowd
6. White boy manager will roll joint near the DJ and puff on stage.
7. Pimply white kids will be pressed against the front of the stage, some with Ben Drury designed t-shirts
8. Set will last under 1 hr and you will walk away glad you saw him but saying WHAT THE FUCK with him rapping over his own records. If you thought Ashlee Simpson was a sham, you really will be shocked when you see Keith perform.

i still like Kool Keith even though i've seen him do the EXACT same set 3 times, 4 years apart. enjoy but don't spend more than 20 bucks on tickets and go in with extremely low expectations. the bit where he freestyles is great and the bit where he counts the crowd is also funny as fuck.

trish (brother loves dub), Friday, 28 July 2006 14:39 (eighteen years ago) link

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Friday, 28 July 2006 17:22 (eighteen years ago) link

By "over his own records" do you mean he had a backing vocal track? Because, even at his shitty shows, I have never, ever, EVER seen him do that. To his credit every time I've seen him he did NOT have backing vocal tracks.

Once in Louisville he did a 45+ minute set, the crowd roared so loud that he did an hour-long encore.

the doaple gonger (nickalicious), Friday, 28 July 2006 17:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, he occasionally will pull girls up out of the crowd and he and his 1-4 onstage accomplices will grind on them while doing "Girl Let Me Touch You".

Matthew, the Analog Bros, the Truckers album and all the bootlegs ("lost masters" etc.) in general suck. I am kinda excited about his most recent two tho, they seem promising.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 28 July 2006 17:36 (eighteen years ago) link

by "over his own records" i mean, the "DJ" put on the Dr. Octogon 12" for Blue Flowers, the original vocal version, and Keith rapped over the top of it. he did this for every single song in his set, all 3 times i've seen him. his mic is on and he does the rhymes very well over the top but he's still as bad as ashlee simpson or any other artist who doesn't perform without backing tracks and guide vocals. a hip hop show clearly sits in a diff. catagory w/r/t the delivery of the music, but to rap over your own vocal cuts? that's ultra dodgy.

i want to stress that i enjoyed each and every show. keith is unique and completely batshit crazy and i love that about him. i just won't pay to see him live again. count backwards 45minutes from when the club has to shut it's doors and show up then. you won't miss more than 5mins of Keith. saves you from standing around like an idiot watching some bullshit local rap group.

recently got "The Return of Dr. Octagon" and "Project Polaroid" only listened to each once (and didn’t make it all the way to the end of either yet), but here’s my 2 cents anyway:

the Dr. Octagon album does not sound like any other Kool Keith release I’ve ever heard. I’m not necessarily sure if this is a good thing, cuz the vocals all seem like they’re way low in the mix, most of the time I couldn’t make out much of them at all. The production is way more hyper and dense and just kinda loud – although Keith’s spoken interludes are funny (“you have a turtle in your uterus. This happens sometimes.”)

the Project Polaroid has better beats, at least to my ears, but Keith’s rhymes are almost totally random free-association stuff. No bragging, no characters, no narrative, no disses – just the weird unending stream of words and non-sequiturs. I kinda like this one more actually. But I gotta listen to both some more… I’ll copy ‘em for ya if you like.

honestly they both make me miss Kutmasta Kurt.

not that lyrical, his verse is interesting but never is too heavy, ykno? got his moments tho not too motivated. initially he had no idea, just a weird cool new style, got sidelined real hard by def jam cuz sensible people never felt ultramag except as a novelty (their one video). then he layd lo i guess, made some moves, killed the automator (who doesn't know how to add and subtract!) who can't produce a damn thing unless he's getting bitcht over the shoulder. anyways, after black elvis was mediocre he hates the music he can afford.
