This was a really tough list. Ultimately (and it pained me to do so) I had to take off "Like a Hurricane" -- it's gorgeous but I'm a little sick of it, and that extended metaphor in the chorus is a bit excruciating (it's like one of those Dennis Miller jokes that, if he had a better understanding of comedic timing, would end on the second "beat"* instead of the fifth, but instead it stretches too far and loses its elasticity).

Glad to see love for "Tired Eyes" and "Change Your Mind."

not Anthony Miccio, no sir (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 3 April 2003 00:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

I had the same problem with "Like a Hurricane". I really wanted to include it; it strikes me as his most emblematic. But yeah, something about the metaphor is a little tired, and the melody on the "but I get so blown away" part always seemed imperfect somehow. The chorus to that point is great, but I find myself expecting something better, more powerful than the melodic fragment that accompanies that line.

I saw him years ago on the H.O.R.D.E. tour at one of those outdoor pavilion type places. It had been a hot, beautiful day and just as they started "Like A Hurricane" seemingly out of nowhere it started pouring BUCKETS of rain. I don't know if they shorted out or were shut off by venue personnel, but the PA speakers cut out a couple minutes into the deluge. This was about the point of the solo, and Neil and CH just kept on playing through their stage amps. I was seated toward the top of pavilion and could just make it all out, but it was a great rock and roll moment.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 3 April 2003 00:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

I mean, I get the idea re "the magic touch" (the manipulative, comforting, compelling dark force) but it's the meanness in his voice that keeps me at arms' length. So why can't I stop listening to it tonight?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 April 2003 00:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

hell if I know. I thought he was talking about a lover's hug or some shit. Plus I never got the meanness in his voice. Maybe I should listen to it again. None of the lines in that song grab me like the ones on the verse of "LIH." The chorus doesn't matter nearly as much to me as lines like "You could have been anyone to me."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 3 April 2003 00:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

and the melody on the "but I get so blown away" part always seemed imperfect somehow. The chorus to that point is great, but I find myself expecting something better, more powerful than the melodic fragment that accompanies that line.

bingo.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 April 2003 00:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

plus the solos on Change Your Mind always felt comparatively listless to me.

whadya think of the Unplugged and Weld versions where his voice cracks on a high note rather than drifting off on Decade and American Stars'n'Bars?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 3 April 2003 00:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

weld = great. can't remember unplugged that well.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 April 2003 00:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

he calls it the "phantom of the opera" version, but I'd call it the "play ball!" version. But that "getting blown away" line, like on Weld, is song differently then it was originally.

Dud but not as bad as the lyrics - Young's perpetual Achilles heel.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

I love the orchestration in "Man Needs a Maid" (is that Jack Nietsche?) though I think the song would maybe be pretty terrible without them--it's like the song demands complete and total overstatement to work.

Hm. Was listening to much Neil Young last night and realized that more than anything else it's his vocal performances that range from brilliant to tepid and worse. "Helpless" is so wonderful partly because it has such a committed vocal (not to mention the lovely harmonies, which sound better in this ragged context than the usually more-slick CSN&Y stuff)--while something like "Vampire Blues" has a good lyric and a really great, odd solo but the vocals sound indifferent to me, not worked out. Neil has a v. unusual voice and he doesn't always seem to expend the effort to use it to his advantage. Of course much of the time he does.

The symphonic stuff on "A Man Needs A Maid" is classic indeed. Really over-the-top, but so is(are) the sentiment(s). An ex-girlfriend got me into the song (I used to think it was mawkish, over the top, blah blah blah), though now that I wish someone was cleaning my house and I find myself falling for fictional characters and celebrities I REALLY like the song. s woods might be right, I dunno if Neil's overwraughtness would work without the big strings. Bright Eyes always works better with grandiose music for me than without, usually. BE's "Nothing Gets Crossed Out" could be Conor's "Man Needs A Maid" if he didn't have so many of them.

Wow, ironically I was wondering if you got my CD-R ever Matos. And I think Shakira could have pulled off "Change Your Mind" better. I've also been noting the irony that you "Change Your Mind" people are dissing the melodic structure of "Like A Hurricane"'s chorus when ugh! yer pick has an even skimpier one!

one year passes...

Excluding the Springfield today it's:

Birds (canterbury house 1968)- stripped down and superior to Gold Rush version
Love in Mind (massey hall)
Man Needs a Maid (massey hall)- though I do like the orchestrated version from Harvest as well
Motion Pictures- really could have went with any of the three that close out On the Beach
Albuquerque
Powderfinger (Chrome Dreams version)
Will to Love- strange production and lyrics, I'm thinking this song may deserve its own thread...
Cortez the Killer- especially tough to pick just one off Zuma
Revolution Blues- so evil-sounding!
Tell Me Why- despite the nonsense lyrics in the chorus

This was really hard and I could easily pick another ten tomorrow. I still haven't heard much post-Rust Never Sleeps so that's basically the last thirty years of his career I've ignored. But damn he had a pretty good run there in the sixties and seventies!

I don't feel right making a POX without hearing all of his stuff (like ColinO, I haven't heard much of his post Rust material, except for Trans). But ColinO is absolutely right to highlight "Will to Love". I'm surprised it's the first mention on the thread, although to be honest I've only heard the Chrome Dreams version. xpost haha, what? they're not boring, how dare you. but honestly, other than the pipe organ version from Unplugged, this isn't a song that changes all that much. it's pretty killer whenever he plays it.

Oops--I guess "Barstool Blues" comes off. (Apologies to Wire for the poor math skills.)

I can't get with this song at all. I want to love it but I'm always getting blown away by this tropical depression (at best) of a song.

^^^That was my first exposure to Neil Young, that video. Whistle Test used to play it on their New Year's Eve (?) show, I think (anyone?). I was pretty young, but I went out and bought the single asap. Probably played it every day for a year and it's hard for me to get through it these days, but it brought me so much happiness I can never hate it!

like a hurricane is one of those songs (unlike, say, cortez the killer, or something) that always seems to make crazy horse sound kind of plodding and predictable though — the hold-it-down-for-the-as-many-measures-as-you-can organ chords and the hit-the-cymbals-as-loud-as-you-can drumming. s'why i wondered if he'd done it differently sometimes

i used to play unplugged a lot for the pump organ version circa age 14

it's definitely funnier than any of neil young's

Mostly it's just that the chorus is a bummer; the solos are good fun and the verses are ok. I don't hate it.
