THE song that everyone on ILM likes

Sorry for starting a thread on a week-end, but this is a momentous event !

Surviving endless rounds of vetoing by some of the world's grouchiest music fans, defeating such contenders as The Impressions' "People Get Ready" (nominated by Tom), Parliament's "Flash Light" (Tarden) and finally trouncing the Fritz-nominated "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes with the help of Sundar's final nixing, the winner is... "All The Young Dudes" by Mott The Hoople , suggested by Arthur.

Post your comments, complaints, insults and recriminations below (it goes without saying that anyone complaining about the winner without having actually participated in the thread will be hunted down, killed and fed to my cat).

Patrick, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The reason nobody nixed it is 'coz they never saw it posted. I know who Sundar is. I'll "take care" of him if it means that Be My Baby is the song that ev'ry one likes.

JM, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't like it. Hunt away!

DG, Saturday, 7 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pfffffffft. Where were you ? :-p

Patrick, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

erm...I never saw this one on the later list, I thought it was nixed so didn't bother doing the job. Don't like it you see. I still think Virginia Plain is the winner, nobody actively disliked it.

Omar, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so we have two threads on this now? Excellent.

how about 'Word Up' by Cameo?

The Dirty Vicar, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All this rubbish after-the-fact whining is rubbish and after-the-fact. Esp. as it all boils down to PLEASE MISS NOT FAIR MISS I DIDN'T READ THE QUESTION PROPERLY MISS...

AtYD is a way-kewl song to adopt as Board Anthem, esp. as I myself am a. not young, and b. not a dude

mark s, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'All the Young Dudes' should be disqualified for being an undisguised rip-off of an Oasis song

tarden, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can live with ATYD over many of the other suggestions ('Smells Like Teen Spirit' - I think NOT), tho' it wouldn't be my number one all-time fave MTH track. Funnily enough I listened to the 2nd side of 'Mott' (their best alb?) only the other day, and was thinking just how underrated I. Hunter is/was as singer/lyricist. So, hurrah.

Andrew L, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you know, i just knew ahead of time that the winner would be something from the bowie/roxy axis, something that's comfortably rock but not the kind of rock that jocks would listen to.

the song itself is just marvy. i listened to the record last night to celebrate. how could one have missed it on the list? it's not like it was in smaller letters.

i am going to have to actually ask to listen to a human league cd in a record store now just so i can say i've heard "don't you want me?" maybe i should listen to a ronettes disc too.

sundar subramanian, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PLEASE MISS NOT FAIR MISS I DIDN'T READ THE QUESTION PROPERLY MISS...

Well it was worth a try ;) So are we still going to do The Song We All Hate?

Omar, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Silly-looking question: am I right in thinking that Bowie wrote the song?

Sundar: you're right about the 'axis', but I'm fond of it. I say: fab.

Also Sundar: jeez, don't worry about DYWM!! It's really not that great! I think that for a lot of people it has become symbolic / totemic / a statement of something; but I'm not sure a statement of what. (The only memorable lines: 'I was working as a waitress', etc. Possibly it's the music, not the lyrics, that is thought to be the 'statement'.) It's OK, or feels OK now; but really, there are other things to be seeking out or listening to - don't fret about not having heard this.

the pinefox, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yup: Bowie wrote and gave it to MtH, who were at that point struggling, career beached. It revived their fortunes hurrah!!

This is an aspect of Bowie I rilly rilly heart, his fannish generosity towards all kinds. It can be a bit maddening — NME had a joke abt it c.1981:"They [ie just mentioned upcoming yoofs] are are my favourite group at the moment — er, who is it we're talking about again?" — but it highlights one of his most attractive dimensions, his nervous cracked style, his transparent fan-admiration, his yearning to be other than than who he is.

mark s, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A 'song everyone hates' is going to turn into whoever can write the longest explanation of why they really love Paul Anka's "Having My Baby".
Although here's my nomination - "Hands Across America". If anyone can convincingly defend that, I'll burn my Gino Vanelli collection.

tarden, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As well any new country .
Primarly for pissing away so much history.
I like shes havign my baby. It is a sweet and gentle expression of fatherhood. We do not have alot of songs telling us how blessed they are to be fathers.

anthony, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Graham's idea was that the song that everyone on ILM hates has to be something that's generally praised (his example was "Yesterday"). I reckon that otherwise it'd be too easy, we could find some Boltonesque piece of swill to agree on in no time.

Patrick, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wtf r mott the hoople?

Geoff, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about Let Me Ride by Dr Dre?

JM, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dre's 'Let me Ride' as in no-one likes? Then you must be kiddin' because it's majestic.

Omar, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you've got to be fucking kidding? I hate that mofucking song?

I thought 'Rebel Rebel' was doing well?

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chewshabadoo: Well do you or don't you like it? You seem to not be sure...

JM, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shed Seven: 'Let It Ride'.

the pinefox, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Continue the song-everyone-hates discussion here.

Graham, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm sorry I have question-mark Tourette's-Syndrome.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 8 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(it goes without saying that anyone complaining about the winner without having actually participated in the thread will be hunted down, killed and fed to my cat).

I was lost in France at the time, so rather than incur the wrath of Patrick, I've posted my comments on the original thread. Needless to say, I don't like All the Young Dudes.

Nick, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

all the young dudes has the trappings of blokerock. despite this, i really rather like it.

gareth, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blokerock? Nah. High Glam, mate, High Glam. Their guitarist was called Ariel Bender.

mark s, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeh, but they were blokey though weren't they? glam or no glam

gareth, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Compared to who? Even the Faces were a bit faggy, and they = uberblokes-band (for the 70s). All 70s rock = anti-bloke rock, whichever way you cut it.

mark s, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Look, never mind about all this blokey/girly nonsense, the chorus is "All the young dudes, follow the news" - that's why it's rubbish. Well, it's not completely rubbish, but it says 'dudes' and it's not being ironic. Or is it? I don't fucking know, but it always sounded a bit lame to me.

Nick, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it says 'dudes', and this is a bad thing?

dude, you've got it all wrong...

gareth, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All 70s rock = anti-bloke rock, whichever way you cut it

Even Foghat ? :)

Patrick, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Even the Stranglers?

Nick, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My Generation?

JM, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know that you know that I know that "be my baby" is sung by choirs of cherubs in heaven while "all the young dudes" is on occasional rotation on purgatory's oldies radio.

fritz, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have now heard "don't you want me?" shrug. it's ok. the back-and-forth of the verses is kinda cool but the chorus is lame ("don't you want me BABY? don't you want me NOW?"). the music sounds like nothing special. but i'm not a raging fan of 80s synthpop anyway. i'm pretty sure that i hadn't heard the song before and that it doesn't get near-daily airplay here. still haven't heard "be my baby" though.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm with Omar. What happened to Virginia Plain? An actual good song!

Blake's with Omar, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"My Generation" = 1965 = not 70s rock, Jimmy the (so-called!!!) Mod
The Stranglers: Jean-Jacques Burnel = i. French, ii. a black-belt in karate, iii. militantly in favour of the European Community (which he helpfully explained completed the social projects of Napoleon, Hitler and Stalin, as I recall). Anyway, i + ii + iii = plainly not a bloke
Foghat = Americans = not blokes!!!

How d'you PRONOUNCE Foghat? Is it like a hat to protect you from fog? Or like "The Last of the Mughal Princes"? (=mogul). Or as in Irish lough (=scottish loch). Or gh as in rough and tough (ie Foffat = my favourite by some way... )

mark s, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Uh-huh !! Foghat = British ! Plus you said "all 70s rock" !

Patrick, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"My Generation" = 1965 = not 70s rock, Jimmy the (so-called!!!) Mod"

Riiiiight... I don't remember seeing any limiters on date. But Be My Baby is older than that and it got mentioned...

JM, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

JimmytheMod: I think we are completely at cross purposes. Apologies for casting ungrounded aspersions on yr modity.

Patrick: er, er, er, well yes OK Foghat *were* British (which I totally just found out for the first time when you said it), but they were only ever remotely of importance in America (= true, actually, even tho I'm now just dicking abt) = not blokes. Hmmmm. Also! also! also! There was no rock in the 70s anyway that was not Brit Rock. Ha! D'you SEE!!

I do actually think "blokeness" is a post- punk thing, in re rock. Except maybe for Rory Gallagher.

mark s, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Humble Pie ! Status Quo !! BLACK SABBATH !!! DUUUUDE !!!

I rest my case.

Patrick, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Humble Pie: Pete Frampton = a nellie = not a bloke

Black Sabbath: you are taking the piss sir. They are BLACK SABBATH!! THEY ARE NOT BLOKES!!
Status Quo: I am stumped and find no flaw in your argument. Rick Parfitt = pretty = not a bloke. But Francis Rossi = blokiest bloke in all the length and breadth of Merrie Englande these many a year arrrr.

I would also in fact have to concede the Cousin-Hudson axis of the abominable Strawbs. So that's three to you (and 12 million to me).

mark s, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"The Letter" by the Box Tops. Who here doesn't like that song? Who?

Andy, Monday, 9 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't because...well..I have never heard it.

And Blake be careful with what you say there in the back of the class, that bastard history teacher Mark S. wants you to play by the rules. He already put me in front of the class and threatened me with the cane. And he made me memorize "Maoism in Free-Jazz 1968-1976" by James Fartknocker. Jeez, life sucks ;)

Omar, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mark s. on "blokeness" = CRACK SMOKED HERE.
does anyone here know the story of how Foghat got their name, BTW? it's a good one - they were playing scrabble & 1 of 'em had the letters F,O,G,H,A,T & tried to claim it as a word. I don't know why that cracks me up so much, I guess I just like the thought of the kind of guys who'd call their band FOGHAT sitting round playing Scrabble...

duane, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...'cause mark are you not familiar w/ the important '70s-rock sub-genre dubbed by Phil Dellio H.R.S. (Hard Rockin' Shit)? the '70s wasn't all fuckin feather boas & guys talking in obsolete homosexual argot, was it?

, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So do we all agree on "Slow Ride"?

([foghat != americans] = bewlidering information)

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Slow Ride" = Classic (I just Want To Make Love To You = emphatic DUD, though)
References to Phil Dellio (& Scott Woods') 70s-music theorizing = Classic

Patrick, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So Patrick, in lieu of disagreement...?

Tracer Hand, Friday, 13 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isn't Foghat a pot-smoking reference? (One wears a hat of fog both outside and inside one's head, so to speak. My friends use the expression "Put on the fog hat" all the time.)

sundar subramanian, Saturday, 30 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anthony - scroll up, ya lunk

"All the Young Dudes"? Are you fucking kidding me? That song is worse than that goddamn "McDonald's McDonald's / Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut" song.

Richard Wood Johnson, Thursday, 16 August 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

I'd nominate Surrender by Cheap Trick.

Does anyone have a link to the other thread? The links someone posted before don't seem to work anymore.
