The Rubble Collection

I got this a couple of days ago and I'm still only about halfway through listening to it for the first time so far, but first impressions are that it is all absolutely fantastic stuff.

My sincere thanks to Dr. C for bringing it to my attention.

So has anyone else apart from myself and the good Doctor splashed out on it so far? If so, what do you think? If not, why not? What's wrong with you?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 3 April 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey where did that come from!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Thursday, 3 April 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I still haven't GOT mine yet, Stew. Those cockfarmers at Amazon haven't shipped it yet. Where did you get yrs from?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 3 April 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I had similar problems with Amazon myself (including them telling me simultaneously that it was "on hand" and that it wasn't available because the release date had been delayed 'til next monday!), so I lost my patience with them (yet again) and ordered it from these lovely people here http://www.megaworld.co.uk/ who got in the post the same day and it arrived the next. Tell Lorna I sent you!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 3 April 2003 08:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just rang megaworld and placed my order - should have it tomorrow!! I enjoyed cancelling the Amazon order too!!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i got a few of em on vinyl, the one called "Electric Crayon Set" is hot. mucho "freakbeat", good good good. the other ones are ok but they got too much tea drinking flower poop.

duane, Thursday, 3 April 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It CAME!!! Only about 15 hrs after placing the order!

Currently grooving, sorry working, to the Neder-beat stuff on Rubble 9 - bonkers.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Now why can't Amazon give service like that?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it's easy to be friendly and fast when you're a one man and a dog outfit like megaworld, I guess.

The thing that pisses me off about Amazon most is how they add VAT later on, just when you're ordering. Then some of their great offers don't seem so great after all.

Btw, a fantastic mail order company I discovered is this :

http://www.opalmusic.com/

They're very fast and cheap. Nearly as good as the awesome Action Records.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

That's looks like a great boxset, not that I could afford it.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Well it's easy to be friendly and fast when you're a one man and a dog outfit like megaworld, I guess."

True, but on the other hand employing a bunch of morons who can't be bothered to read customers' messages properly or take any responsibility or make any effort to investigate anything but just send the first thing in their stock of standard responses that looks vaguely relevant, is hardly a sensible way to try to run a business either, is it?

Amazon.com manage to be friendly and fast most of the time and they're hardly a one man and his dog outfit, so why does Amazon.co.uk's customer service have to be so bloody dreadful?

Sorry for the rant but they just bug the hell out of me!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the series that Bam Caruso did on vinyl, yeah? I always thought they were really high quality but I only have like two or three of them. Is it 10 full cds? Or just the first ten vinyls of the original series transfered to disc?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 4 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

so, impressions please, like specific ones?

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 5 April 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr.D - it's the first ten Rubbles transferred to Cd with a little sound tweaking on the way. Each of the ten CDs corresponds exactly to the original Bam Caruso series.

Impressions - I could go on for hours about how important this stuff is - i'll try and find time to get some thoughts down over the next few days.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Saturday, 5 April 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, my next purchase. I have like 15 Teenage Shutdown records. Also very worthwhile and inexpensive on vinyl if you can order them all. The quality is very good and with such fab band names as The Mere Existence, Disillussioned Younger Generation, and The Opposite Six.

Carey (Carey), Saturday, 5 April 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 August 2003 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

why didn't i see this thread the first time?!?!

the Rubble Box is FECKIN GRATE and i will be buying Box 2 on the day of release and no mistake!!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Incidentally, can anyone* tell me whether A Perfumed Garden series are any good - and how much of what's on 'em am I likely to find I already own elsewhere?

*- although I am thinking specifically of someone with an unsual, medical-sounding, first name and an extremely short second name which rhymes with B, D, E, G, P, T, V or (if you're American or learned your alphabet from watching Sesame Street) Z.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 14 August 2003 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not the good doctor and i haven't purchased one as yet BUT they do have very tempting tracklists and they are often being sold new on eBay for peanuts

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Excellent news re Volume 2 . I'll start saving. I don't think I have as many of the originals in this set. (Not the actual originals obviously - if I had them I'd be a millionaire). Without wanting to put a dampener on the whole thing, the quality was much better on vinyl wasn't it or is that just me?

Oh, Stewart, I think you must have received the same e-mail as me this morning!!!!!!!

Kim Tortoise, Thursday, 14 August 2003 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Stewart: the following link is ESSENTIAL in your search for garage rock greatness:

Thanks Jim, I've been to that site before but I must remember to bookmark it this time!

It is amazing how much of this kind of music is out there.

earlnash, Thursday, 14 August 2003 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

so is this some sort of psych box set?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 14 August 2003 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yep!! one of the best sort - extensive!

".... extensive!"

Or, to put it another way, expensive

one month passes...
Anyone know when Rubble 11-20 is out then? It was on Amazon as a pre-order and now it's not. Not that I'm ordering it from those cockfarmers anyway (see above).

**Stewart said : *Incidentally, can anyone* tell me whether A Perfumed Garden series are any good - and how much of what's on 'em am I likely to find I already own elsewhere?**

Virtually everything on these is well known and much compiled. I think you'd find most tracks on Rubble 1-20.

Instead get this : http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000069CJ0/ref=sr_aps_music_1_1/202-5716715-4006225 (fantastic, fantastic, fantastic!)

and this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006IQEV/ref=pd_sim_pm_dp_1/202-5716715-4006225

and if you like those, get this (but get the others first) :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000067CIT/ref=pd_sim_pm_dp_3/202-5716715-4006225

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

rubble 11-20 has been delayed but is still out soon. www.megaworld.co.uk has it available for pre-order at a very respectable price..

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

psych/freak/beat comps never fail to give me a total hard-on these days < /TMI>

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

actually it's "due in early september" whatever that means

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the Deram volumes (11, 12) are particularly tasty

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. C, don't know if this is of any help but it's listed on a dutch online musicshop as "to be released on Sept. 29."

willem (willem), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of psych, what can anybody tell me about Nick Nicely?

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i just noticed those comps that Dr C mention feature a lot of Aussie stuff.. it's such a shame that Aussie psych is all but dead these days :(

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

**the Deram volumes (11, 12) are particularly tasty**

11 is the best Rubble of the lot - absolutely 100% great stuff. The Cherry Smash! Felius Andromeda!

Jim, they're ALL Aussie stuff. Some awesome sounds.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got lots of these albums somewhere on vinyl, haven't listened to 'em in years - definitely lots of good stuff as well as lots of duffers too

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of psych, what can anybody tell me about Nick Nicely?

The first thing to say is that he isn't Mike Batt - which is what everyone more or less assumed. I think he had about three singles out in all - I read an interview with him about 5 years ago but I confess I've forgotten most of it!

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, those Ozzie comps are fabulous. Fave is Upstairs Downstairs by Jon, but there's plenty more too. Also search The Twilights.

Nick Nicely: there was a piece about him in Record Collector a few years back (who thought he was Mike Batt? This is the first I've heard of that...). Two 45s: DCT Dreams, a hit on the continent, I believe, and Hilly Fields 1892, a turntable hit in the UK, and a marvellous recreation of 1967 (Dukes of Stratosphear?? Get outta town). I'm unaware of any reissues (how do you repackage a guy who's only released 4 songs? CDEP?), but Hilly Fields is well worth seeking out (the other 45 less so).

Rubble Collection: these are mastered off the vinyl LPs, unless I'm mistaken, yes? Bootlegs, I reckon, as are most of these Past & Present releases. How do they get away with it? But yes, musically simply essential.

harveyw (harveyw), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

at least some of Rubble is from master tapes - the back sleeve of (at least) the first CD in the box trumpets as much. if they are indeed taken from vinyl they've been mastered and cleaned up exceptionally well..

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 September 2003 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

they're a mixture - the majority of the masters were available when Bam Caruso did the original series of vinyls, so I assume they're still around. A few tracks were taken off vinyl and I think there are one or two from acetates. It all sounds marvellous to me.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 06:22 (twenty-one years ago)

who thought he was Mike Batt? This is the first I've heard of that...

This quite a common rumour - his voice is almost identical and you just know that if Mike Batt were to turn his hand at a psychedelic track it would be pretty good and pretty accurate

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 26 September 2003 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Wouldn't you be concerned that people might take that the wrong way and start approaching you with collectibles and expecting all sorts of unpleasantness in return?

Or maybe that's not the wrong way....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 26 September 2003 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Gosh yes I'd forgotten how good Volumes 11 and 12 are... V12 has my favourite single of all time on it, "Beeside" / "Vacuum cleaner" by Tintern Abbey. And I'll have "Magic rocking horse" by Pinkerton's colours going through my mind all afternoon now, so I'll be happy. I wish I could afford both these boxes, y'know.

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 26 September 2003 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ordered!!

Vol 11....

THE ACCENT - Wind Of Change
THE POETS - Wooden Spoon
FELIUS ANDROMEDA - Cheadle Heath Delusions
THE PLAGUE - Looking For The Sun
THE FAIRYTALE - Listen To Mary Cry
FIRE - Treacle Toffee World
THE ATTACK - Colour Of My Mind
THE CALIFORNIANS - Follow Me
THE FAIRYTALE - Guess I Was Dreaming
FELIUS ANDROMEDA - Meditations
THE SAUTERELLES - Dream Machine
THE ATTACK - Lady Orange Peel
THE POETS - In Your Tower
TURQUOISE - Woodstock
CHERRY SMASH - Fade Away Maureen
THE ICE - Iceman

...is the best Rubble ever, even better than 6 or 1. I will still keep my 180g vinyl copy I think. It's a beautiful thing. Rubble 12 is also most wonderful, but virtually everything on it has been compiled a million times.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 26 September 2003 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, "Cheadle Heath Delusions".... what a song.... what was that line again, "Public houses with no beer"?

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 26 September 2003 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes, I have that Volume, it's a good one

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

**"Public houses with no beer"?**

Yes! Also "I see young girls with old fellers". Everyone always compiles 'Meditations' but CHD is much better.

Proof that they were bonkers is here : http://www.marmalade-skies.co.uk/felius.htm

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

My God, they were utterly barking! My brother lives in Cheadle Heath now, which is ironic, as he's got Rubbles Volume 11 there with him.

As a sort of cross post on the subject... the BBC obituary for Robert Palmer claims he was in Mandrake Paddler Steamer - this is surely not true?

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 26 September 2003 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"Robert Palmer was not in [Mandrake Paddlesteamer] but in a Hull-based band called Mandrake"

Googling Robert+palmer+mandrake really does gives a frankly alarming insight into precisely how lazy and routinely plagiaristic the vast majority of news journalists are 'though....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 26 September 2003 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Has everyone else received their copy of Volumes 11-20 now?

two years pass...
Does anyone happen to know anything about this, this, this or indeed this? "New Rubbles", released by Past & Present the same people who re-released the original ones.

Specifically: are they worth getting?

Also, while we're at it, this and this look rather intriguing too....

Only a track listing for the 1st volume. Looks like a Beat music comp? Honestly, I think Rubble was a patchy series. I've got volumes of Chocolate Soup for Diabetics and Incredible Sound Show Stories better than just about all the Rubble volumes. (That said, the Rubble box sets are pretty affordable and, of course, there's great stuff on there.)

That first WEA comp looks cool. That Kim Fowley track on there is the shit!

Incredible Sound Show Stories wz a good series.

aren't those last two reissues of those rhino handmade nuggets things from a couple of years back?

the 'new rubble' series doesn't look very interesting to me. i do however think the entire rubble series was excellent - i could count the songs i out-and-out dislike on my fingers alone

"aren't those last two reissues of those rhino handmade nuggets things from a couple of years back?"

So they are! I wonder why they've changed the titles? So much for them being limited editions - well worth the premium price!

The new Rubbles are compiled by the Bevis Frond, at least the first one is. It looks tasty - some nice freakbeat stuff on there. I couldn't find tracklistings for 2 and 4, but 3 looks dodgy unless you're a huge fan of slightly revved up beat-pop/R&B. It's mainly 64/65-era.

I might order vol 1 and see how I get on. Will report back!

CDEP?), but Hilly Fields is well worth seeking out (the other 45 less so).

i've spoken about it before but the 'psychotropia' comp of nick nicely's stuff is really really bloody good

i actually think dct dreams/treeline is just as good as hilly fields too.. a lot more synthy

three weeks pass...

Yeah, I just picked up a Rubble Volumes 1 -10 today. It says it's '0855 out of 1000' - strange to have such a low run.

The sound quality is very good.
