The Hives are still around

dave q, Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

They have about the worst name, tho I could maybe form the Lennon-McCartney band in tribute

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

True they aren't as good as The Scott Johnson, The Rollie Perry, or The Roth Hagar Cherone

dave q, Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't listen to them. but they do put on a good live show. as long as you like your ripped off carbon copy garage. the manage to get the crowd dancing most of the time.

kephm, Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, they aren't nearly as bad as The Str*kes.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The current drummer is also the leader of The I Live The Life Of A Movie Star Secret Hideout, who made some excellent early-K-esque recordings a few years ago. Really, the only thing I have against Mooney Suzuki is that their busy schedule gets in the way of The I Live The Life Of A Movie Star Secret Hideout.

mike a (mike a), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

if this is your worst band ever, you probably don't get out much.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

they play shows in clubs while wearing sunglasses. does anything else really need to be said?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

They really weren't that bad live, though I'd never have seen them if I wasn't friends with the aforementioned drummer. Even with their schtick, I've definitely seen worse live acts.

mike a (mike a), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The lead singer reminds me of Ben Stiller. Sometimes he even does Blue Steel.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

O MY GAWD!

And one of their guitarist looked like a dead ringer for BJM's main guitarist who wasn't Anton.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

hey, Can should have shut up shop itself circa Landed, and however deserving they might seem, Sacrilege however cutely self-fulfilling has to be one high-wanking holier-than-thou band-approved tribute

In the Can anyone? The Thankfully Canned ?

george gosset (gegoss), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

People who can't differentiate between The Hives and The Mooney Suzuki are an even bigger dud than The Mooney Suzuki.

Go back to your blog, blog dude.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 3 April 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Mooney Suzuki are NOT the worst band ever, because if they were, their only good song ("O Sweet Susanna") wouldn't sound so much like "Two Tickets to Paradise" by Eddie Money. They are better than (for starters) Wilco, Coldplay, and Sigur Ros, none of whom have ANY songs than sound ANYTHING like ANY Eddie Money song. So there.

chuck, Thursday, 3 April 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

than = than

chuck, Thursday, 3 April 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant: than = that. (Above.) Shit.

chuck, Thursday, 3 April 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i think girl scout heroin sounds much better than blog dude, splendid mullet

george gosset (gegoss), Thursday, 3 April 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Have a song sound like Eddie Money is a good thing then?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 3 April 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, of course. Again: Sounding like Eddie Money = Good.

chuck, Thursday, 3 April 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

While I haven't heard enough Eddie Money to say it's good to sound like him, I'll fight anyone who denies the power of "Take Me Home Tonight."

theodore fogelsanger, Thursday, 3 April 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Baby Hold on To Me" is probably his best cut.

Let's turn this into an Eddie Money thread. There was an interview with him in an issue of Roctober a couple years ago. He went through some bad times.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 3 April 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

get back to work, chuck.

die9o (dhadis), Thursday, 3 April 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I started an Eddie Money thread ages ago and no one replied! I declared him the best cop-rocker ever!!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 April 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll fight anyone who denies the power of "Take Me Home Tonight."

Maybe, but Ronnie Spector could make the phone book sound powerful.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 3 April 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the melodies Money comes up with! He's tremendously underrated and ignored. "Shakin'"? "I Wanna Go Back"? All great great great.

Clarke B., Friday, 4 April 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never knowingly heard them or seen them play live, but I saw an interview with them once. I could endorse a "worst band ever" contention. Eddie Money on the other hand. I've never seen an interview with. But "Hold on to Me" was one of those songs I kind of assumed I hated until hearing it a few years later on 'classic rock' stations—I don't know if they still play it that much anywhere, probably sometimes—and found out that I always got into when it came on. It may have had something to do with the car; it's a good song for being alone to, strangely.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 4 April 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Radiohead must be the greatest band ever since all their best stuff sounds just like "Baby Hold On To Me".

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 4 April 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

All their worst stuff sounds just like "Dust in the Wind".

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 4 April 2003 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Baby Hold On to Me" has this weird harmonic minor thing going on with the bassnotes that makes the vi-IV change sound so strange and wonderful.

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 4 April 2003 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Eddie Money was discovered by Bill Graham after honing his chops on the "rough" streets of Berkeley, CA. He was a drinking buddy of a friend of mine's dad.

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 4 April 2003 06:04 (twenty-two years ago)

There is really something about the the way "Baby Hold On to Me" kicks in with that trebly, strumming guitar that seemed to evoke another world whenever I heard it come on the radio. Yeah, and the way when it changes into the chorus and he sings "Baby!"

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 4 April 2003 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come on ppl "Two Tickets" shits all over "Baby Hold on to Me"

dave q, Friday, 4 April 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the 'we're gonna take it to the top' part sucks but it's all of 3 or four seconds long!!

'two tickets' rules that's true

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Re TMS - not as good as The Lake Haskell Wetton Belew, but better than The DeYoung Shaw Burtnick Gowan
