Krautrocksampler: Anybody know where I can get a copy?

This now seems to have disappeared completely from the bookshops and even from Amazon. Does anyone know of any record or second hand book shops (UK) that might have it?

I'm kicking myself for putting off buying it when it came out!

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

It's vaguely amusing but not in the least definitive...

Dadaismus, Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't kick yourself - it's the worst book I have never managed to read right the way through. Julian Cope is a f***in' abysmal writer...

Dave Stelfox, Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I've always really enjoyed his style of writing myself, whereas I've never cared at all for his music!

I would really like to get that book.

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

In case you know your german: www.amazon.de
I just bought a german translation on ebay (since buying an english one is a) highly unlikely and b) fukcign expensive) and found out later that buying it from amazon.de would've been cheaper... I would however buy the original if I could find it somewhere priced reasonably. (why don't they reprint it? or maybe we should collectively ask them to do so, it seems to me that a lot of the people here would want one (i've seen requests in a couple of threads)

willem (willem), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers Willem, but it's nearly 12 years since I studied German, so I think the intricacies would be rather lost on me. I guess I'll have to write to headheritage.com and get that petition going!

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll sign it!
(maybe posting a link to this thread would "add a little weight"?)

willem (willem), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Two man army!

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought would be the place; either that or check Book Exchange on Pembridge Road or Helter Skelter in Denmark Street (Londoner options these).

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

M: That's not really Shock & Awe, is it?

willem (willem), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops: I am html retard: www.headheritage.com

"Don't kick yourself - it's the worst book I have never managed to read right the way through. Julian Cope is a f***in' abysmal writer"

Balderdash. It's far from a definitive account, true. But it's written in the spirit of the music by someone that clearly loves it dearly. Mind you, I've never felt any need to listen to his records.

it's quite informative, though, if you don't know much about the subject. I dug up my copy the other day following a conversation about Faust with some pals in Nottingham.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 3 April 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, headheritage are the last people in the world deserving of a shock and awe approach. Perhaps I should revise what I said earlier to "two person petition - thus far!"

Cheers for the kind recommendations, Suzy. I thought I'd hold off trying Helter Skelter for as long as poss as I'm sure it'd cost through them! I'll give the Book Exchange a go, though!

I'm afraid not. It covers the right things, it's just badly, badly, badly written and really annoying to read... standing firm on my assessment that it's a bloody rotten book...

Blightersrock (Da ve Segal), Thursday, 26 May 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

I lent my copy of this to a guy about 5 years ago. Every once in a while I ask him if I can have it back, and he's like "sure thing". But he never does. Last time I spoke to him he confessed that he hadn't even opened it up!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 26 May 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

It has lots of inaccuracies, some of which I'm convinced are intentional.

Hands up who thinks Can/Damo sings "One eyed soul, mushroom head" and "I'm gonna get my kicks there"

The Jesus and Mary chain had it as "I'm gonna keep my distance". I have it as "I'm gonna keep my despair"

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 26 May 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

Actual Faust lyric:

"J'ai mal aux dents, j'ai mal aux pieds aussi"

Julian Cope (p. 117) renders this as:

"Chet-va Buddha, Cherra-loopiz"

Can't wait to read Cope's definitive Proust translation.

I am NOT convinced any of this is intentional. I AM, however, convinced that Julian Cope is a drooling idiot, but then I already knew that way back when I first heard the Teardrop Explodes.

Audie, Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

I think it's "I'm gonna keep my despair."

And the Faust song in question is actually "Chef Paul Prudhomme / Chef I won't pay to see."

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 26 May 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Mark, are you implying that Cope's interpretations of Suzuki's lyrics are inaccurate? Because honestly, I'm not even sure Damo knows...

But anyhow, Yes, cutty, I'd love a copy. (As long as the file is less than 20mb, it'll fit.)

Actual Faust lyric:
"J'ai mal aux dents, j'ai mal aux pieds aussi"

Julian Cope (p. 117) renders this as:

"Chet-va Buddha, Cherra-loopiz"

But the whole point of the original lyric is that it's ambiguous

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 27 May 2005 08:16 (twenty years ago)

Wuh? I thought everyone *knew* it was "shit pal Buddha, shimano pharisee"?!?!

Just looked on ebay, there's one auction that has it at £23 with three days to go, or an 'instant purchase' buyitnow one for £69.
