Music That Makes You Sick

My in-laws are obsessed with Manheim Steamroller, so I'm subjected to listening to this drivel every time I visit. I develop a headache and start feeling nauseous whenever it's played. There's a lot of music that I hate, but I can't think of anything else that literally makes me ill. Any others?

Isn't there some story about a classical buff who dropped dead in the 20s after first hearing jazz?

Curved Air. Joni Mithcell. Scout Niblett.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

There's far more music that makes me feel physically ill than I normally like to admit: Fred Durst's voice and lyrics, Spyro Gyra, Courtney Love's voice, almost every Eminem song ever, the above mentioned Manheim Steamroller, Rockapella, that song with the chorus that goes "roll out", the one that goes "oooooh that smell", the upper registers of Mariah Carey's voice (dogs agree with me there), etc, etc.

Once I got the clap after a rendez-vous with one of David Bowie's back-up singers.
Ever since then, I get a burning sensation wheneven I hear "Jean Genie"

ofcoursei'mlying.

Handsome Soundartist to thread...

No, really, he's told me stories of lots of experimental noise type soundartists who *aim* to try and make the audience physically ill with their soundwaves. Furthest HSA has got is blocking out all the frequency ranges wherein human speech is located so that people physically *cannot* talk through his performances. Wish I could do that... :-)

hot hot heat's "bandages" makes me want to vomit up my liver.

hafler trio's "mastery of money" used to give me an instant throbbing headache every time i put it on.

your null fame (yournullfame), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Butthole Surfers and Deli Creeps often make me want to puke, but in a (very) good way.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

george gosset (gegoss), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how they use the term "acid jazz" to describe the least acidic, most easily digestible style of jazz that exists.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

who are manheim steamroller?
ride with me by nelly and most recent red hot chili peppers makes me feel quesy...

robin (robin), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It's clearly not that easily digestible, though, based on what you and almost everyone else says about it!

Clarke B., Thursday, 3 April 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Jazzbo - that story is untrue. In reality, he committed suicide. (not making this up btw)

dave q, Thursday, 3 April 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

nothing to do with acid or jazz -- how about bleached muzak ?

george gosset (gegoss), Thursday, 3 April 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the chemichal brothers mix of swastika eyes has actually caused me to vomit. it is horrible.

big d (big d), Thursday, 3 April 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha, good point Clarke!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 3 April 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Jazzbo, have you tried reading Ornette Coleman's music ?

george gosset (gegoss), Thursday, 3 April 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

George: "Reading" Ornette Coleman's music? No, but I love listening to most of it.

Robin: Manheim Steamroller is a hugely successful (we're talking sales only here) electronic, neo-classical, New Age orchestra. And they sound even worse than that description. My in-laws have actually seen MS live. I'm curious what that would be like. Is it a bunch of guys sitting around with synthesizers?

Dave Q: Yes, now I remember reading something along those lines.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 3 April 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

German house producer Losoul's 'Belong' album gives me an upset stomach. This is the only record that does this and it's unfortunate as I actually like the music. Must be some weird frequencies, dude.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I second the supremely unbearable Hot Hot Heat

and most showtunes / musicals. Lady Jessica loves 'em so I often must endure 'em. They do quite literally make me feel ill. She thinks I'm just being dramatic.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 3 April 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ahhhh, you guys are speaking metaphorically when you say music makes you vomit, but i was in vegas and partied a little too hard on a popular drug in the rave community. the entire night i couldn't stop puking and dry heaving. every little stimuli that was too strong, i'd puke. if the lights were too bright, if it smelled bad in the room (it was 4-5 in the morning and everyone was cleaning with awful amonia cleansers).

so finally there's a tv screen that was playing (on repeat for the entire weekend) live video clips of early Destiny's Child and late Sting. i kid you not, i heard that sting song and instantly puked.

despite all the puking, i'd have to say i had a pretty great night.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 3 April 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

>Did these guys even do anything besides the songs in "Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego"?

Rockapela did accapela covers of rock songs. Did they ever release anything ever? I liked the WITWICS? theme song.

The song that makes me physically ill... cheeky girls (touch my bum).

fletrejet, Thursday, 3 April 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

you know, people used to laugh when i told them that certain very bad songs were physically painful for me to listen to. now i don't feel so alone.

mannheim steamroller doesn't make me vomit, it just makes me laugh at its lameness.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 3 April 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

That Jackk Officers song that just goes vooooom-voooooom-vooooom really slowly. Its sounds like the inside of my head after way too much to drink.
