I really dig this stuff, but the appeal seems pretty limited. Hustler's Convention = blaxploitation film as spoken-word record (which is GRATE! cuz I can't watch "the Mack" at work).

yeah. in theory it looks fantastic: last poet in blaxploitation mode over funky period kool and the gang. i'm glad i've got it, but i couldn't tell you the last time i listened to it.
i do, however, quite often listen to the Iceberg Slim disc.

I've always thought Hustler's Convention would make a good "book-on-tape" kinda thing to listen to during a morning commute... I cannot verify this however, as my trip to work is 15 minutes on the BART.

Is this really the only Last Poets thread? A shockingly under-discussed band on ILM. They were incredible and they absolutely were NOT rap, no matter how many critics try to pigeonhole them as such! They were much angrier and more serious than that, with not a hint of entertaining the audience or moving the crowd. “The White Man’s Got a God Complex” is my favorite.

It's rap only in the sense of being "rhythmic spoken word", but yes, it's intended as poetry/commentary not entertainment. The music industry didn't really know how to categorize their early recordings; their first album reached #11 on the *jazz* chart. If not rap in the modern sense, it's certainly hip-hop or at least amongst the very earliest precursors to it.

Watts prophets were pretty good too.
Did hear one of them was undercover though.
