Diminishing Quality of Threads

Sorry to be spear-heading the frowny grown-up brigade but....

It's all gone a bit pear-shaped, hasn't it! Might it be time for some parameters to be enforced?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed. I look at ILM and wonder where I am.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

insert the old "start some threads you like" argument here

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah. this one's good though.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

lets just agree to leave them unanswered.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

(in cranky old man voice): I've started more credible threads than you've had hot dinners, son!

Really, though, can't we raise the bar a little bit?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah just ignore the rubbish. hopefully you know who will get bored eventually. and yes, setting up good threads is the only way to re-tip the balance. i'm off to bed now, but i'll set up a few tomorrow. they won't be throwaway, i promise ;-)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

what the hell, just blame me anyway.

hstencil, Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Hoi!

My Susanna one was many things but throwaway it is not!

Methinks Kilian is stuffy. Needs to shake his bum more in the disco.

Calum, Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

not stuffy at all, calum dear! i'm not particulaly offended by your threads, i'm just bored. don't you get tired of making the same jokes over and over?

(Oh why am i bothering?!)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

::seals lips:: jumps over to ILE.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll post my review of the Barbara Morgenstern album if you want and you can all cuss it.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM HATES FUN

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Thursday, 3 April 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all part of the natural life cycle of a discussion board, it will eventually pass.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 3 April 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

this one was good:

Favorite Moments (1): Glimpsing the circuitry

but no one wanted to contribute...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 April 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian Svenonius to thread.

maria b (maria b), Thursday, 3 April 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

aw, thanks Spencer! I tried...

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 3 April 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I mean, Calum is one thing. He doesn't spam the place with meaningless threads the way those threads about various religious heroes stance towards different sorts of music were.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 4 April 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude! you are so literal.

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Friday, 4 April 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Friday, 4 April 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

wheres my swans

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Friday, 4 April 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, Geir's complaining about useless threads now! one of us...one of us

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 4 April 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the circuitry thread is good

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 4 April 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd suggest to limit the number of threads someone can start by one per day. Maybe that would make people focus a little more on what sort of discussions they start. Just my 1 ct.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 4 April 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

you know it's always been just a suggestion, but making it the actual rule for a week or so might have a desirable impact

NePTuNe, Friday, 4 April 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Calum is funny in the same way that the war on Iraq is just.
His wit is as welcome as a clusterbomb.
His subtily is as nonexistent as the weapons of mass destruction.

kevin brady (groeuvre), Friday, 4 April 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Calum bought his subtily from the Russians via Syria apparently

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 4 April 2003 08:00 (twenty-two years ago)

if it isn't spam it's the geirbot obstructing all form of discussion or conversation with theory and stubborness.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

POX POX POX POX POX POX POX POX

SplendidMullet (iamamonkey), Friday, 4 April 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

'if it isn't spam it's the geirbot obstructing all form of discussion or conversation with theory and stubborness'

except w/out the 'theory' bit! Any opinion no matter how outlandish is fine but if you have to use the word 'good' 10 times per sentence that doesn't count as backing it up

dave q, Friday, 4 April 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Well it's not actual theory I know, it's geiry.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

NUFF SKET BOY GET ME

PACKA-9-MILLI, Friday, 4 April 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Paranoid Nordicskillz says "This is about me, isn't it? I DO have some serious, well-informed and original opinions on the music YOU love. Honest."

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

STOP WHINING.

, Friday, 4 April 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

but its v indie thing to do ;-)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I CAN'T HEAAAAAAAR YOOOOOUUUUUUU!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, can we can it with all the list threads please? It's getting ridiculously boring.

The two technocentric threads going on at the moment are grebt, mind.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

geir is fine. i don't agree with much he says, but he is at least polite to everyone. now that hes stopped putting up all his top 20s he's fine by me. calum, however...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, in my drunken stuppor I didn't see this thread and started something simillar last night. Geirbot and his war for melody, Calum and his pointlessness, Mike Taylor dragging a joke on WAY to far, em@il character getting more time to write in caps because, well I dont know why but he does and thousands of POX warped from OPO which was questionable enough at the time.
No Nordicskillz, its not about you in the least.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha - we were discussing last night how EMAIL is that saddest of things, a troll who no one actually cares about or even gets worked up enough with to bother getting annoyed by. Can we keep it like that?

Geir is alright - I mean arguing with him is essentially like banging your head against a brick wall but he's not really a problem as such.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I THINK IM ABOUT TO CRY.

, Friday, 4 April 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

But he is a problem. His pointless dribble is just like posting DNFTT for several screens to kill a thread.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

EM@IL...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

With the recent spate of hands on moderation, maybe if the mods just edited Email's posts to lower case?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I would if I had mod rights on ILM (and scads and scads and scads of time to click on these apparently awful threads that I've never clicked on).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

WO THATS COLD MAN.

, Friday, 4 April 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

for fucks sake you lot can be fucking out of order sometimes. for a start geir shouldn't even be mentioned in any of these conversations; to me he's an insightful, intelligent poster who's passionate about music. in fact he puts alot of you smug fucks to shame. as for emai@l, granted he's started some pretty pointless threads, but how do they differ from some of ethan or josh's banal posts and threads from a couple of years ago? oh yeah, he's not part of the freakytrigger/blog network is he? damn

schnellschnell, Friday, 4 April 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

he's not part of the freakytrigger/blog network is he?

ITS FUNNY BECAUSE ITS TRUE.

, Friday, 4 April 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

what about my thread about changing the preferences of your computer programs, c'mon that's GOOD STUFF!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck. I have appeared here today thinking - 'oh this looks nice' and you're all a bunch of animals. Wow.

P K (Debord), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

We should retitle it POX Computer Program Preferences then?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The whole atmosphere is starting to resemble the holiday dinner table scenario when the kids leave their assigned spots at the card table in the pantry and start running rampant in the dining room, upsetting all semblance of reasoned adult conversation with squeals of whistleheaded idiocy.

And at least the POX threads had something to do with music.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 4 April 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"whistleheaded"
Damn, Alex, you paste a grin on my face every damn day.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 4 April 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. All this wailing and gnashing of teeth sounds suspiciously like prognostications of doom typical to online forums that have been around ever since the first hopeless newbie showed up and ruined everybodies (read:the old timers) fun back in the days of usenet.
Eventually, the newbies will get a grip, settle down, raise a family and it'll be THEM who will complain about the next crop of newbies.
