so, who in here can tell me about belfegore?

(i'm not going to capitalize here -- this keyboard's really old and it's giving my carpal tunnel major aggravation just typing on this without capitalization)

anyway, i've just recently fallen head over heels in love for the music of this band called belfegore, and i figure if anyone in the cyberverse could give me the (english-language) 411 on this group, you guys could. when were they formed? what's the background on the group members? what's their discography like? what live performances have they given? anyone have photos of them? (yes, i have seen the video for "all that i wanted" -- in fact, the one time i ever saw that video, on vh1 classic, was what what got me started on them. but one time's not enough to get to know what they look like.) where/how could i find their music stateside?

you know, all the questions a fansite would ordinarily offer and that i would've gotten off said fansite if a english-language belfegore fansite actually existed. i've done a web search on them and have come up with nothing but german-language sites. well, i studied spanish in high school and college, so i'm pretty much out of luck there.

anyway, my fingers are cramping up now so i'll end this soon. i'm really looking for help re: this group.

Wow, and here I was thinking I was the only fan of the `fegore! Outstanding!

As I understand it, Elektra never saw fit to release their one and only LP on disc due to some sort've legal tussle between the three members. I do have a nice CDR of it, though.

The video for "All That I Wanted" is quite possibly the best video of all time.

The first link posted by Gatinha is a different band, not the Belfegore from `84.

This is the band I was talking about....

They had a video back in the day that consisted of nothing but footage of people running along a pier or something. That's all I know.

Gatinha:

Noooo, the first link is definitely not the Belfegore I heard! I know -- I visited that site and thought, "Hmm, well, this certainly isn't the synth/goth/hard rock band I heard on the mp3s I dled." Good to know a Spanish-language heavy metal band is going all the way to the Czech Republic, though.

The second link though -- BINGO! Thanks for directing me to that page! That's the first bit of English-language 'net stuff that I've found on them!

Alex in NYC:

OMG, you like them too? That's truly amazing! Heh, the reason I know about this site is because of a post you made about Peter Schilling's "Major Tom" that I managed to pull up on another net search I made! Anyway, I did dl approx. 10 songs from them on a file sharing program and I've adored all ten of those songs, especially -- geez, forgot the title of my favorite one thus far, but I've also liked "Love" and the aforementioned "All That I Wanted" quite a bit too.

Thank you for that little bit of background info re: the availability of their music. Such a shame no CD will be available. I guess I'll just have to actually buckle down and fix my computer so I can burn music CDs again. (I just have to run a couple of programs, but I need to get the programs first before I run them.) I hope one day the whole issue will be resolved, though. There's nothing like a store-bought CD, especially if it comes with a really good CD booklet (I could stare at the pictures enclosed with U2's "All You Can't Leave Behind" and read the lyrics enclosed with Howard Jones' "Dream Into Action" all day long.)

Lee G:

That's the video I saw on VH1 Classic!! I think the chyron for that even included the name of the director -- some sort of Balkans-area name, very hard to remember, but he really did a good job with the video. Then again, a video won't do it for me if it doesn't come accompanied with a good song, and this one is a good song.

I knew you guys would be big helpers!

p.s.: Yes, I'm typing on a nice, newer keyboard now. No more slamming on keys. *smile*

This is weird. I bought that a few years ago, and NEVER got around to listening to it. I think it was one of those times when I bought about 30 albums on the same day and just forgot I had some of them. Now I'm curious.

The director is on Zbigniew Rybczynski. Quite Polish. His body of work is very impressive, as I recall a lot of these videos stand out in my memory (particularly the Art of Noise video). Check it out at http://www.mvdbase.com/director/R/zrybc.htm

As for Belfegore, I am *dieing* to get my hands on some mp3's or a cd of this album. If anyone wants to hook a brotha up, I would be most appreciative and can handle trades or other arrangements.

Hey, I actually saw Belfegore play once when I was a kid. They supported U2 all across Europe on the Unforgettable Fire tour, so I guess that was 1985(?). I caught them at the Munich Basketballhalle. To be honest, I can't really remember that much about the performance other than 3 skinny figures clad in black leather on this vast stage being quite intense and noisy. Quite brutal and dissonant to my young ears, but I actually quite liked 'em (one of my first gigs - I'd cheer for anything!). I seem to recall all the pop fans there looking a bit stressed out and tortured though. Certainly my friend wasn't too happy! :o)

Almost bought the album shortly afterwards but I spent my meagre allowance on a Short Romans album instead - supposedly the German answer to the Chameleons at that time. Hey ho...

MY FIRST POST EVER ON THE ILXIVERSE!!

*laughs* Or, at least I think it was. And look at me now. I've devolved back into being a mere little fangirl, raving on and on about stuff, instead of continuing to inquire about other musical artists I'm not as passionate about but still love in terms of their music.

I think things will change sometime in the foreseeable future, though. I will return to listening to a variety of musical artists, still being a huge fanatic-type person of a few of them, but still loving everything.

*wonders how to approach one of the people on this thread in a highly apologetic manner*

i just found the All that i Wanted 12" for 50cents at the local thrift store. it's got "Wake up With Sirens (Francois K & Conny Plank Remix)" and "Seabird, Seamoan (Conny Plank Remix)" on the b side. it's aight. not really my bag, but i don't wish i had that 50cents back

Burger abortion i don't ask it i demand it!!!! (jaxon), Friday, 21 October 2005 00:41 (nineteen years ago) link

It is now the greatest 12" you own, and while you sleep, it will eat all your other 12"s and shit them out all over your floor then do a victory lap. You owe it fifty cents. Now pay up.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 October 2005 01:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Alex is right - you should probably keep it in a different room from your other 12"s.

"All That I Wanted" video on YouTube!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=SdCoCdqiJaQ&search=belfegore

It's minus the first 20-25 seconds, and the picture's too small to fully induce nausea like you'd hope it would, but so what? Still the craziest video ever, 20+ years after I last saw it. (And kinda creepy too, seeing all those New Yorkers running for their lives, cameraman included, with the WTC towers looming in the background.)

Here is a download link for the full video--33 MB, .AVI format.
The quality is acceptable, but not as good as we'd like...it's still better than YouTube's quality.
I've put it up on Rapidshare; it should stay up indefinitely as long as someone downloads it every 30 days.
If I come across a higher quality version, I will post it here!

P.S.--If the video won't play, please get VLC Media Player:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
VLC is just generally good to have; it will play anything.

Also I just learned from Wiki the other day that they had a direct connection to the Neue Deustsche Welle (guys who used to be in the KFC and Die Krupps, both on Cachalot's classic 1982 Deutschland compilation), and the KFC guy was apparently in cool German new wave band Nichts in between. So now you know!
