what bands are really despised by people who love their biggest influences?

y'know the whole radiohead deal.people who already loved the inspirations behind the last two albums tend to really despise radiohead. but what other bands have this problem? it's normally when a major rock act adopts the influence of obscure/experimental music, but i'm sure there are examples to the contrary. i'm not necessarily looking for bands you hate that have influences you love, more bands where the general tendency is for some to say "oh if you think that's good, you should check out x album released on x indie label in x year, ahahhahaha!" you know what i mean. maybe.

commence...

Bluenotes weren't particularly popular among most Stone Roses fans.

Same about Gene and the way most Smiths fans would view them btw.

Coldplay - Radiohead / Jeff Buckley. Although this doens't work, because a lot of Coldplay fans just lump RH and JB into the same fucking ugly formless melange of mediocrity cos their synapses are so fucked-up from being underused that they can no longer differentiate between good quality and bad quality and therefore just consume any old shit with a whiny falsetto singer, even fucking Haven.

people who like baudrillard don't tend to like U2.

Coldplay - Radiohead / Jeff Buckley

Those who are still Radiohead fans will probably tend to dislike Coldplay. However, those who were Radiohead fans around "The Bends" and "OK Computer", but was so disappointed by "Kid A" they don't consider themselves Radiohead fans anymore, will often love bands like Coldplay and Travis, because they are stort of picking up where Radiohead left.

Most Belle & Sebastian influenced bands, to my ears, just seem like utter turd.

Kiss got their start opening up for The New York Dolls. Most Dolls fans (myself included) cringe at this fact.

Suicide > ARE Weapons. Though not me. I like both.

how about Zeppelin > Whitesnake? I like both of them too.

Oh well. I'll just move along.

Classic Punk fans hate Modern Pop-Punk; Modern Pop-Punk bands love Classic Punk. To state the obvious.

I think the Eagles suffer from this. A lot of people who dig the band's rootsier influences depise the Eagles themselves.
At least, I do. That's one at least.

The Dolls never wrote anything one third as good as "Strutter."

Fischerspooner.

Sam J. (samjeff), Friday, 4 April 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i second fischerspooner -- though i suspect that they are more influenced by Howard Jones (DUD) than Gary Numan or Human League (both CLASSIC) than they or their fans let on.

also SIGUR ROS -- i love shoegaze and the Cocteau Twins, yet i utterly despise Jonsi & Co. and i know i'm not alone!
