HOW WILL THE CRISIS IN THE MIDDLE EAST AFFECT POPULAR CULTURE AS WE KNOW IT?

Maybe people'll write some good songs about it?

Madonna's new video has a "clear anti-war message" has it? Here was I thinking that she was just cashing in on the current fashion amongst hopeless trendies for wearing combat gear. Interesting to note that talentless musclebound old hag's worries about the war do not take precedence over her worries about falling sales.

i think things are getting real scary. i mean in the 80's you took it for granted some band you went to see was gonna talk shit about reagan and such and everyone would go 'right on, man!'. but people can't do anything anymore. even madonna can't be controversial. and love her, hate her, trivialize her, etc. she just doesn't do that. i mean there's a bill in oregon to arrest civil disobediant peace protestors as terrorists and jail them for 25 years. when i heard that my heart sank. i could say that was the moment things turned into the third reich. either that or when i heard about the "A Christian's Duty in Time of War" pamphlet marines get telling them to pray for Bush every day. someone (la weekly?) cited electroclash as escapist cabaret comparable to what was goin on in that era. you cannot even protest anymore. you will be destroyed. stockholm syndrome is coming on. art will become obscure, abstract, and escapist.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Here are two things I'm thinking about:

1. It's not good netiquette to shout with every post you make.

2. I really shouldn't be answering posts made by people who insist on typing their whole post in the space specifically reserved for the subject alone.

*turns, heads out of thread*

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

For once, I actually agree with Dee the Lurker.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 9 April 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the subject trumps the egregious breach of netiquette. Mr. Nameless Shouter here has a serious question.

Re: lolita corpus's thoughts:

I don't think the country is trurning into the Third Reich. I think it's seriously misguided right now, and under some truly historically bad leadership, but it's not quite a police state, and there's still plenty of room to fight it. We can still vote, for one thing. (Please, please vote in 2004.)

It's strange, but I get a lot of hope out of this season of Fox's "24," starring Keifer Sutherland. Sure, it's action-melodrama. But consider these plot points: terrorists with nuclear weapons. The US government plotting to allow them there, to their own nefarious ends. Foreign ambassadors with pure motives. A president who really, honestly wants to avoid war. An Arab diplomat arming himself with an automatic weapon to shoot American soldiers, on American soil, becuase said soldiers are part of the evil plot to wage war. It's all couched in some pretty hokey plot, but there's real subversion (however subtle) going on, right on the Fox network. That's just great. It makes me happy to live where I do.

I don't understand what the hell these questions mean. Luriqua, it sounds like you're putting Sufi Islam on a par with terrorism. You're exactly like those poor misguided white people upthread who have nothing to feel self-righteous about so they steal the identifying marks of the people feared and hated by their own cultures - that's all the keffiyeh means to them.

FUCK THEM
AND FUCK YOU

If you want to get in the mind of a Muslim, or a 'terrorist,' how about trying to learn something about what they believe in rather than making stupid fucking gestures

-FUUL II-, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

Dude. Chill out. Who said anything about Muslims? Oh. Luriqua did. Well, that's not the part of the question I was echoing. I'll take any anthem music from any terrorist group.

Mordechai Shinefield, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

Sure, take their music, as long as you don't let their beliefs rub off on you. Be careful man!

-FUUL II-, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

I'm an Arab and I'm a Muslim, and my culture is more than just a source of samples for the fucking Chemical Brothers.

Great, an American sellout who panders to the West's worst stereotypes of Arabs. Way to go. I'm not saying don't enjoy Arabic music, I'm just really kind of angry and upset that its being associated with hatred and terrorism, and being apparently pursied and listened to and appreciated for that.

-FUUL II-, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

HOOS, we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. ILM will not tolerate your racial stereotypes on our property. We have not and will not charge you a cent and you're free to take your business elsewhere. I'd rather not call the police, but if you insist on continuing to disturb our guests I will. The Iron Sheik raps about glorious martyrdom, destroying Israel & defeating the Great Satan. I didn't make any judgements whether his music was "terrorist" or "freedom fighting," and I definitely didn't suggest his music was inherently Muslim.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

Just thought it might be what Mordechai was after.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm. Interesting, but not quite what I was looking for. Maybe something less individually presented (ie: like a hip-hop artist giving his opinion) and more folk-terrorist music? I heard this song once from Israel, about lifting knives in the air, or something. I think it was a dati song.

I doubt terrorists would have music. They are probably sorts that say Islam forbids music. The Taliban bombed music shops in Afghanistan.
